Came across this site by chance when discussing another CL with the same owners - this is one of three in close proximity, in fact everything is in close proximity on Hayling but that doesn't mean there's not much to see and do.
The delightful site is based on an old boatyard, several yachts are still present and in various states of disrepair. I liked this actually as it added to the charm and character of the site, as did the adjacent creek which seemed more often devoid of water than in flood. Have no concerns about midges and mosquitoes, we visited for two weeks after the August bank holiday and found none, the odd fly and wasp maybe.
The site has not one, but two slipways! The smaller one is not really useable but we launched our kayak from the larger one next to the houseboat many times during our stay. The water has to be +3. 3m LAT using Northney as a reference, in simple terms it's usable for a couple of hours before and after most high tides. We launched our boat from Hayling Yacht Co next door because it has more depth offering more time out at sea, see Boatlaunch for more details.
Each pitch has it's own water supply. This is great if you have a mains kit for your Aquaroll, it's all on tap! Waste water is tipped into the hedgerow. Elsan emptying is next to the entrance gate and the single rubbish bin. No recycling at the present time. You can choose wherever you want to pitch up, there is an abundance of electric and water points.
If this were not a CL, I estimate there's enough room for a dozen or more campers, so plenty of room for just five, and all are fairly level. It also means the grass is in good condition because awnings are not always erected on the same spot.
Beware the pitch closest the entrance if you have a motorhome, although ok at the time of our stay it looked like it could become waterlogged and be a trap. In prolonged wet spells I would simply use the concrete boat slab instead, this wouldn't be an issue on any other grass pitch.
The ground was really hard on ours and hard to peg but I didn't mind. We had full sun some days and loved it, great for sitting out around the BBQ in the evenings.
There is no shower block or shared facilities at this location and post-Covid I welcome that. We always preferred our own shower and toilet anyway, in no way does this detract from the site, in fact the reverse, it keeps tariffs low which was a flat rate of £20/night so you can't really go wrong.
If for some reason you were not 100% happy with this location then I'm sure accomodations could be made with one of the other sites. The owner/manager Ann is really kind and helpful. TV reception was amazing, less so for phone data.
Voice was ok but O2 have a problem with 4G keep dropping out. No doubt not helped with the weekend migrations.
If there's any negatives then it's Hayling Island in general which has only one exit road off the island. The weekend sees a mass influx of people to the long shingle beach, huts, amusement park and golf courses, so at times it's nose-to-tail off using the main Havant Rd. The back lane via Northney Marina could save some time?
There's an unmade road running through the site which had occasional use by other campers for dog walking, also a couple of stables nearby so we saw horses being led through the site a few times.
This is an adults-only site, no doubt because of the risk for unsupervised children to get into trouble, either falling off the quay or getting stuck in the water or mud. Maybe they would climb into the boats.
It really was a quiet and relaxing place. If the wind was right there was that wonderful harbour smell you get at fishing ports and there was plenty of bird (and bunny) activity right from your caravan window. Pitch black at night so bring some good lights.
There's a great local chippy, largest Lidl ever with in-store bakery. Also a large Co-Op and small Sainsbury's nearby for food shopping, also a large hardware store. Slightly further afield we picked our own strawberries near Chichester, we didn't really have time to explore Portsmouth so are saving that for another visit. Local Jet petrol station sold reasonably priced fuel.
On arrival we didn't meet the owner, but I'd already confirmed our booking a week in advance, and text our arrival in the morning and paid the fees via online banking. The couple renting the houseboat mooring act as unofficial caretakers and were very friendly to give info but try not to disturb them.
Check out the excellent reviews on the Caravan Club website. This is the best place we ever stayed which is high praise indeed, we thought it was impossible to outdo the CL we found at Salcombe. We could never EVER go back to a regular commercial site. Ugh!
We are so spoiled and grateful we could stay at Mill Rythe.
Hopefully our new home from home!
