We'd been to Saint Hilaire de Reitz frequently in the past and liked it so decided to return for a few days.
This site is described by ACSI as 4* and on paper seemed to have everything we were looking for.
Rather than being in or near St Hilaire the site is actually equidistant between there and Saint Jean de Monts, about 8km from both. It's on a long road that is made up almost exclusively of large holiday complexes to the extent that it's hard to see where one starts and the next ends. Other than that there is little there, but there are some good cycle paths.
It accepts ACSI Camping Card out of season at the rate of 20euros + taxes pn.
From the road and Reception the site looks very nice. Reception was ok and we were given a choice of pitches and told to return to Reception to let them know which we'd chosen.
The site was mainly made up of static rentals with some pitches for tourers interspersed. To get to the pitches we had to pass the large water slide complex that spans across the road and pass through what seemed like another campsite made up only of mobile homes before we got to the barrier to 'our' campsite. There was a queue at the barrier as barrier key would not work so we had to return to Reception to get it sorted. Once inside we chose a pitch opposite one of the facilities blocks.
The pitches, which are quite large, are in blocks of two surrounded by high hedges/trees on all 4 sides with a space to access the pitches, However, the gap in the hedges to access the pitch might be a problem to some larger units, especially if the second pitch is already taken.
On trying to set up the electric we realised that the box only had the old fashioned French two pin sockets and unfortunately we'd not brought ours with us. Usually in this situation campsite Reception have adaptors that they rent out but in this case they didn't so we had to set up without the EHU that we'd paid for.
Sad to say the showers and toilets etc were not at all acceptable. They were dirty, run down and dark (no lights in some places at night). The water was cold to lukewarm and there was no toilet paper - not something that usually bothers us but expected in a 4* site.
The advertised bar and restaurant didn't open until 6. 00pm and the drinks were quite expensive for a campsite. The restaurant menu offered only Pizza or Burgers with chips.
The pool complex, which we did not use, was very large, very busy and very noisy. The children using it obviously loved it. The beach is about 400m away from the entrance, across the road and through the forest so there's plenty of choice for swimming etc.
In the end we stayed for only one night as we were very unhappy with the cleanliness of the facilities and the service, especially with Covid - no way worth 4*. It was not a site we enjoyed.
Having said that I imagine the pool complex, entertainment and proximity to the beach would make it a good holiday site for those with children if the site could sort out it's problems with the facilities.
