We visited the scenic Odenwald area in June 2022. Little-known outside Germany (compared to, say, the Black Forest) there is so much to see, and we easily filled our stay visiting places within a 30-60 minute radius.

Camping Park Hammelbach is quietly located in a rural area. The site is well kept and has around 50 seasonal pitches (so occupancy picks up at weekends) and 35 touring pitches. The latter are all situated at the favourable southern end of the site.

From the website, be sure to download the 'site plan'. We were on Pitch 16, with fabulous views over meadows, trees, and distant hills.

All the normal washing/laundry/WC facilities are housed in one central building, and both the range and cleanliness are exceptional, including much local information.

Lets get the 'bad' news out of the way:

1) Don't be seduced by pictures of the swimming pool. It is not on site, but a public facility in the village about 500m away.

2) Hammelbach village is pretty dead. No little supermarket, other than a Netto on the outkirts or pleasant eateries, although one or two places do have limited opening at weekends.

When you are out and about, search for Edeka and Rewe supermarkets, they are always good.

The upside however is that you are surrounded by dozens of fantastic walks, which are well signed. Don't miss Cafe Bauer in the woods - unbelievable cakes to reward your exertions. Invest in the Geopark walks map, sheet 9 - loads of useful info

('Blatt 9, Der Überwald Wanderkarte 1:20. 000')

Nearby, the traditional and well preserved towns of Michelstadt, Erbach, Heppenheim, Weinheim, are all stunningly beautiful in the traditional German style.

And the jewel in the crown is the City of Heidelberg. The Altstadt is mostly pedestrianised, and it is well worth taking the funicular railway up to the castle for stunning views over the city.

This is an important wine growing area ('Bergstrasse') and we improved our knowledge and made several purchases (!) at the Viniversum centre in Heppenheim. English spoken, very helpful staff.

To summarise, the Odenwald is a beautiful area to visit. Brits are a rarity, and we saw many fantastic sights in the region. If you would like a quiet site, sort your daily shopping out, and like we did, you will have a fantastic stay!
