A ribbon campsite set along the banks of the Vezere river beneath the lovely old town of Uzerche perched high above … is centred around the ‘Base Nautique’ which hires kayaks and canoes and provides a range of river trips both up and down stream; they also provide lessons if needed, and archery activities on a couple of days a week. A weir creates a short kayak course to dodge through the gates … though not fast flowing, so easy enough for all abilities to ‘have a go’.
The river was quite low (August), though still more than navigable … from upstream, my inflatable (with a drop stitch floor’ still ‘grounded’ on submerged boulders from time to time … many shallow mini rapids (nothing difficult) were only a couple of inches deep in parts, though by lying flat to distribute weight, I generally managed to float over the stones. Never had to get out and ‘Portage’ …. Some ‘poling’ with the paddle shaft, though.
Going downstream there were several ‘barrages’ with canoe/kayak chutes to fly down … paddling back upsteam was possible, though when you reach a ‘barrage’ you can be faces with a range of portage ‘efforts’ …. Hiring, of course, means they will collect you and drive you back … great for the idle!
There are two sets of ‘ablutions’ (bring your own paper), both reasonably modern and clan … unisex. Hot water for washing up was seldom available, but filling up at the ‘laundry basins’ on the other side of the facility does provide hot water.
The lower section of the site runs directly along the river in a continuous one pitch deep ribbon … pretty well all under trees, and very shaded.
The section upstream of the Base Nautique is split into two terraces with camping spaces and a range of small chalets. This section has some shaded pitches and others quite open … below the two terraces is a grass ‘beach’ area along the river bank.
The ‘Base Nautique’, which houses the Reception area, offers local free WiFi plus some basic refreshments … not a proper bar experience!
A five to ten minute walk along the river, downstream, gets you to the bottom end of the town … a good restaurant (Hotel) immediately facing you on arrival.
Everything else, including the old town, is up hill.
The old part of the town is well worth a mooch.
A good base to explore parts of the Correze, with plenty of ‘driving itineries to follow … we particularly ‘fell for’ Segur le Chateau … but there are loads of others and the area is littered with ‘Plus Belles Villages’.
Very cheap for a good location.
