This is our surprise favourite site of 2023! We went there simply because we were meeting up with friends in the area and found this idyllic, stunningly-located, beautiful site by pure chance.

Nestled in the Cévennes and just a short drive from the village of Saint-Jean-du-Gard where there are small shops, bars and a supermarket, this is a medium sized, peaceful campsite which has been in the same family for some 35 years. They work hard to keep it looking wonderful and it's clearly a labour of love. Pitches are on gentle tiers down to the river, which they dam every year to raise the levels for swimming or just for cooling off in. Rock shoes are essential.

There's a huge grassed area alongside the river, ideal for relaxing or for children to run about and play.

Pitches are of a good size, some with shade, some partial shade and some sunny. All have 6 amp EHU points (€2 extra for 10 amps). No individual water points. Most pitches are divided by hedges, as is common in France (and which we prefer).

There are 2 excellent pools (proper trunks for men compulsory), no water slides, and an on-site restaurant (menu is basic) with seating on a terrace overlooking the pool area. They do takeaway food, which is useful. All is reasonably priced. Take your own bowl if you want frites!

There are 3 good, modern sanitary blocks which are kept clean. Dishwashing facilities are in these blocks. Shower cubicles are a good size, hot water plentiful and water pressure excellent. Toilets have seats and loo rolls.

There's outdoor gym equipment, a couple of BMX tracks and a kid's playground, so it's a site that's geared-up for kids but all very subtle.

Across the river, there's a donkey field and we found it amusing to watch these lovely creatures.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here and will definitely return. We'd have gladly stayed longer, but had made other plans.

My only gripe is this: pitches must be vacated by midday. We asked if we could possibly vacate by 4pm, the site was less than 20% full and the pitch was apparently not reserved. Madame agreed but charged a further 17 euros for the privilege. Not a big deal and it didn't dampen our enthusiasm for this lovely site but we did feel it was rather a lot to charge for the further 4 hours stay.
