We stayed here en route to Galicia. I didn't know anything about the area before coming here, but the campsite looked nice on the website, so we went for it. Its about a half an hour drive up from the A6 motorway at Pontferrada. Its situated in the Ancares Leoneses National Park, or the Bierzo region.

The campsite is situated on the outskirts of the town of Vega De Espinareda, which has two small supermarkets, plenty of bars and restaurants, everything you need.

We were checked in by the very friendly owner, who quickly realised the limitations of our Spanish, she had no English, but fluent French which was great for us. She brought us around the campsite, suggesting pitches for us to choose and showing us where the facilities are. The campsite is small, with about 30 pitches, including a few cute cabins for rent.

We wandered up town and discovered an amazing swimming area. The river through the town has been dammed to create a natural swimming pool, the edges of the river were very well finished off, like a pool, with ladders to get in. There was a lovely grassy area for sitting out, having a picnic, etc. It was really busy, and lovely to see people of all ages using the amenity. The Municipal Pool with waterslides was located beside the river and was free entry. It was astonishing to see a Local Council providing such a fabulous amenity, and all at no cost.

We jumped into the river, nothing prepared us for how cold the water was though! The weather was very hot and it definitely cooled us down.

We drove up to the next two villages up the hill. The first one had a free outside pool, a smaller version than the one in Vega. The upper village was absolutely stunning, the views across the valley were magnificent. It was very hot so we went into a bar to get an ice cream, there were lots of men in there playing cards, I assume they were working the land and it was too hot to be out there during the afternoon. They were having lots of fun and plenty of laughter, it was nice to see such life in a small village.

The campsite bar/ restaurant is part of the reception and is housed in a lovely old farm building with covered outside seating area. We had a drink the first night and the lady who checked us in served us. We had a meal the second night and the same lady took our order and cooked the food. It was delicious local cuisine, and so inexpensive. The woman's husband was doing all the outside work, so it's a two person operation.

We only had two nights here as we had arranged to meet our adult children in Galicia. We met an English couple staying here, they had more time and went exploring an old Gold mine, which they highly recommended. We didn't get time to visit Pontferrada and Astorga, which are reportedly beautiful historic towns. I would love to come back to this area to visit these places and to further explore the National Park.
