Skiddaw House, a former shooting lodge, occupies one of the most atmospheric and isolated locations imaginable in England, in the heart of the wild country Back O'Skidda, overlooking the head of the remote Caldew Valley.
The surrounding land has now been acquired by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and is to become the subject of a major habitat restoration project. The lodge is an independent hostel affiliated to the YHA, and camping pitches are available. Dogs are allowed on the camping ground, but not in the hostel itself.
Booking was simple, I just emailed an enquiry directly to the lodge. I arrived late in the day after having walked over the Caldbeck fells from Mosedale to the east - it had been a wet and windy day at times, and I was glad to reach the shelter of the hostel.
I settled myself into a comfy chair in the large common room whilst waiting for reception to open. I checked in - the warden was most welcoming, and after paying my £10 (cash only) I went outside to pitch my tent in the fading light. Note that there is no vehicle access - the shortest 'walk in' is about 5 miles (8km).
The pitches are at the bottom of a walled enclosure in front of the hostel called 'The 'Garden', in reality a sloping area of rough grass. It was not the best pitching ground, but I soon found a level enough spot for my small one man tunnel tent, sheltered by some trees and a stone wall - a snug pitch.
One of the biggest attractions of camping at Skiddaw House, after the stunning location, is access to the common room and kitchen facilities, as well as the toilets and decent showers. The shop sells a modest range of food and excellent bottled beer from a local brewery (again cash only). Several gas hobs are installed along the wall of the common room for cooking, and there is a scullery to the rear.
I met the other 4 residents and we settled in for a pleasant evening in front of the large log burning stove, chatting about our days out on the fells. Note that there is no mains electricity or wifi at Skiddaw House, but they have their own solar and generator powered battery system, and cooking and hot water is by bottled gas.
