This is my third visit to the Strathmore in 8 months and once again it was great and at £5 per tent per night it's a bargain!

The campsite is a field behind a pub (one of our favourite ways to have a night out!) It isn't even but we found a fairly level spot. The views are fantastic and it's so quiet with barely any road noise. Only the birds and sheep in the distance are heard.

The loos are spotless and there's ample hot running water. They're also left open all night.

They don't do meals but have pies and sandwiches. The real ale is one of the best pints you can get, absolutely fantastic. We're camra members too so can be fussy ;)

If you like walking then this is a great spot. You can easily walk to low force plus it isn't far into Middleton. Also this pub is on the Coast to coast route.

It won't be long before we're back I'm sure.

We stayed 2 nights here after reading reviews and had a great time. The pub was very quiet on Thursday night, we were the only people in. But it came to life on Friday with great local musicians. We were made to feel really welcome and will definitely return.
The carpark looks a bit shabby but the pub is lovely with a coal fire and very friendly landlord (although he is moving on soon - another couple are taking over the pub). Facilities are limited to the pub toilets, which are accessible all night and are very clean, and a tap. We didn't need anything more !

The pub is not currently doing food but you can eat at the Bridge in Middleton.

VFM for us was great - the landlord didn't charge us anything ! Tents are £5 per night.

Just had a fantastic one night camping holiday here, two adults and seven kids! As previous reviews state it is not for those wanting luxury, but we found it excellent value for money at only £5 per tent, so nine of us stopped for a tenner!

Toilets are very well maintained, and the fresh water tap is outside which is ideal for cleaning kids boots off after an easy walk to both low and high force.

The landlord is a friendly chap, and his beer is good too! And he didn't seem to mind the amount of noise seven kids can make, though having the field to ourselves was nice as we could let the kids play freely.

Lovely setting for the tents behind the pub, we found some firm flat ground near a wall for shelter though the bottom edge of the field is marsh ground at the moment. We enjoyed watching the rabbits and sheep, and a couple of birds of prey, and there aren't too many of those annoying outside lights, which makes it an ideal place for seeing shooting stars and the milky way, if the clouds stay away for long enough that is!

We didn't eat in the pub this time, but I've eaten there before and can confirm the food is scrumptious.

We'll deffo be camping there again.

Spent one night at this great little pub - the owner lets you use the car park for your motorhome and doesn't charge anything, so it's customary to have a bite to eat or drinks in the bar. Facilites are basic: he leaves pub toilets open overnight but they do the job just fine. Beer's great, as is the food. The local scenery is excellent, particularly the cliff faces overlooking the Strathmore estate. Ideal for river and hill walks. Middleton is three miles away, offering all the essentials such as banks, Co-op, chippy, pubs etc. Highly recommended site!

Spent one night at the Strathmore Arms and was very pleased overall. The owner allowed us to stay in the pub's car park as the access road is very steep. Although the facilities are limited, the pub is great with nice food, beers and weekend live music. The owners are very firendly and didn't make a charge for our stay.
The local area is well worth visiting, with several walks and the nice town of Middleton-in-Teesdale a couple of miles down the road. Would certainly return.

If you want beautiful scenery, and not a lot more this place is perfect.
The site is a field behind the pub, it is not very level but if your tents not too big you shouldn't have a problem, also, unless you have a 4x4 you will have to park your car in the car park and carry your stuff into the field as the entrance is very steep.
The facilities are very basic. There are toilets in the pub which we could use, even on a night the main pub is locked up but the loos are left open.
The land lord was very friendly the only 'warning' we got was to keep the children away from his chickens, he had caught someone trying to hit them with a stick!
There was live folk music the two (weekend) nights we were there this was lovely to hear. The pub also serves meals, I didn't buy any for us but I was told they were very good.
The only thing we found wrong with the site was after hours. But then to quote my husband (who stayed at home) "what did you expect camping behind a pub?"

Spent two days on this site over the Bank Holiday weekend. The site is free with no restrictions. It is a large unkept field to the rear of the Strathmore Arms pub. The entrance is very steep, you can park you car next to your tent IF you dare attempt the slope, there's a car park if you don't dare. The pub's toilet block is separate to the pub and open to all 24hrs a day. That's all you get, a toilet and a wash basin. The small pub itself is as basic as the camp site, but the food and drink are good and at reasonable prices.
The area is very scenic and well worth a visit. In all, I would definitely make a return visit.

I actually stayed here a few years ago (pre Jan 2004), and I must say that when I was there I had a throughly good time.

The unusual thing was that we didn't pay anything to stay, as essentially this is a large field behind the Strathmore Arms pub, next to some very eye catching crags. You are allowed to use the pub toilets which are accesible from outside even late at night, but thats it for the facilties- toilet, water tap, pub.

If your looking for luxery you won't find it here, but if you are looking for a place with spectacular views, lovely walks by the river, and High Force close by then this is a cheap (if not even free) place to camp.
