If you want a site right next to a fantastic beach with great surfing then this is the place to go! We stayed in our touring caravan on a reasonably sized pitch which we were more than happy with. What I would say though is check where your pitch is first as some vans were on the main road in where every Tom Dick and Harry walks past and 'noses in'! The swimming pool was spotless and toilets/showers dated but clean. The on site restaurant is okay but stick with the pizza as its what they seem to do best. This site is primarily for static caravans and there are only about thirty touring/tenting pitches all with electric hook ups, water and drainage. It caters mainly for the French so there weren't too many 'Billy Brits' there.
All in all we had a great 17 nights there and would like to return again next year.

We stayed here for two weeks at the beginning of August. We had a brilliant time. Pools were good, and I thought perfectly warm. Indoor pool good and spacious as well as having an indoor slide.
Plenty of French.A rare thing in many of these campsites. We really felt as though we were in France. This was our 5th holiday doing the French camping / caravan thing and we really did enjoy it. It was a luxury being able to walk to the beach, and the chi chi vans at the end of the beach give you an excuse to go for a walk.
Highly recommend.

I had never been camping before and had no idea what to expect. I therefore can not compare Les Dunes with any other site but here are my thoughts.
If you love the beach, then you will love this site's location. It is a very short stroll along a sandy footpath from a fabulous, sandy beach (huge beach). We could hear the waves crashing at night from inside our tent!
The site is open up until November. There are loads of facilities on site; inside and outside pools, restaurant(s), supermarket etc but as we went in September these were all closed, except for the inside pool. The shower blocks were not new but were cleaned every morning even though in September the site was almost empty (The site overall was spotlessly clean). There are electric socket points in the shower blocks. All pitches have electric points and running water. The site is large with a variety of shaded and sunny pitches. Personally, I would not have wanted to be there in high season, purely because I'm not fond of being around loads of children, however September was perfect if you like peace and quiet and privacy. The site is mainly for static homes and when we went these were occupied by French people at the weekends only.
There is a lovely picnic area adjacent to the site amidst pine trees. There are a limited number of pub-style benches however and I should imagine that in high season you'd be hard pushed to obtain one.
There are some wonderful restaurants within walking distance in which we spent many a merry night :)
As I have said, I have nothing to compare Les Dunes with, but I would certainly return again next September because of the cleanliness and for its amazing beach location. My advice would be, if you are going with your own tent in high season, then it might be advisable to book beforehand.

This site is mainly given over to Mobile Homes, with some pitches left for tourers and camping. The layout of the pitches is unusual and although there is much privacy from high (6ft+) hedges) they are very cramped together. The facilities are excellent however. Very plentiful showers and toilets (not used by many people now that most have mobile homes) kept spotlessly clean. The site has a shop, swimming pools (outside ones too cold), play areas, etc It is right next to the sanddunes and the beach (lots of sand everywhere!) - brilliant if you love the beach. We found that the site was mainly occupied by French on holiday - which makes a refreshing change - and they made us feel very welcome. A strange place to camp in a tent though - felt a bit outnumbered by all those hundreds of mobile homes!

2002 There are a limited number of pitches for tents/caravans/campervans. Site had excellent clean pool complex, 2 slides (not the scariest we have seen), excellent restaurant, takeaway, bar, small supermarket (reasonably priced), tennis court, 3 indoor tabletennis, variety of evening entertainment (usually outdoors) inc disco, karaoke (not as bad as we had expected!), folk dancing, real variety of live musicians/bands etc. Washing machines, showers are clean etc.
Superb lifeguard-supervised sandy beach is right next to the site - approx 100 yds walk across dunes, have to cross a foot/cylepath. One part of beach is for surfers only - bodyboarding & the stand-up variety (?), dogs not allowed on beach in high season (or on a surfboard either, I guess...) Near site are one or two restaurants in walking distance, another bar/restaurant with 'amusements' (unfortuately) that can be a bit noisy with live music on some nights till 1.00 a.m.
Over 60% visitors are french, rest mostly english, some german/dutch - but all friendly. Most of site management can speak english.
Can recommend for adults, children over about 5, but not for babies. We have been there twice now, because it seemed to satisfy most of our current holiday needs. If you wish you don't have to use a car at all once youre at the site - everything you need is within walk. St Gilles-croix-de-vie is a 20 min drive north - pleasant day/evening out with good restaurants & shops.
