This was our first trip to the Scillies- the original plan was just a day trip by helicopter but then we decided to take the plunge and stay. We chose Bryher mainly for its proximity to Tresco- it was certainly the right choice. I went by plane from landsend airport and my partner took the luggage on the boat. We carefully weighed our bags to keep in the limit but in the event, bags were not weighed on the boat. On arrival at the quay in Penzance you label your bags with the island you are going to and put them in the container then that's the last time you handle them until on the actual campsite on Bryher.
When the boat docks at St Marys the passengers all pile off and the little boats for the islands line up and they unload the luggage off the Sillonian directly onto the right island Ferry (according to the luggage labels)then the passengers all get on the ferries to the 'off islands'- as they are known.
On arrival at Bryher we were met by a tractor and trailer and this is when everyone helps unload the ferry onto the trailer. The tractor then winds its way up the hill to the campsite and is unloaded in the camping field. At this point everyone collects their stuff and starts pitching wherever they choose. There are about 4 separate areas with loads of room- we chose by a hedge.
The facilities are as advertised. We didn't wait for a shower once and there was plenty of hot water at all times. There is no warden/reception, the campsite is run from the Bryher boats office on the main street. We went in for a chat after a day or so when we had worked it out!
There is a well stocked shop with fresh hot bread at 9am each morning but you do need to be quick! The times of the ferry from Bryher to other islands is on a chalk board outside the office-generally 10 ish in the morning and then 2 ish in the afternoon.
The campsite has a wild bird population who know no fear- sparrows everywhere, including in your tent, we had great fun feeding them, almost out of your hand. Everyone is really helpful and friendly, many had been to Bryher many times- which speaks for itself. I could go on about the crystal clear waters, shimmering sand etc but you can read that elsewhere- but it is all true- our only surprise was how COLD the water was- definitely full wetsuits required even in a hot week in July (yes it was that one hot week we had in 2012)
For the return trip to Penzance the procedure is that you have to be all packed up for around 12 noon then the tractor does a tour of the field and collects up all the packed bags and drives them down to the quay, on arrival at st Marys you put your bags straight in the container on the quay and you are free to explore until the boat leaves.
We were very impressed with the smooth running and the organisation- a well oiled machine- but it was these details we didn't find before we left so we thought you would find it useful. We would certainly recommend it and hope to return another year.
Just a quick note about the flight to and from landsend- equally well organised and smooth. We left St Marys 20 mins early as all the passengers for the flight were there. An excellent mini bus service takes you from and to Penzance.
