This is a very small site just outside of Braintree. As a solo cycle tourer with a single man tent my needs are few, but I was disappointed in this site. The washrooms were disgusting.Nothing more than the most basic of facilities and they were not hygenic at all.
The field was not level and it was hard to find a pitch comfortable to sleep on. I bent several tent pegs as there were many rocks (hardcore?) under the grass.
It cost £6 and I felt it was poor value given the facilities at other sites I stopped at on this tour.
On the plus side there is a nice fishing lake and a very good farm shop.

We stumbled across this unique place by chance on the way home from walton on the naze. We were suppose to stay one night as my wife was unsure because there is no electric and we had our 4 year old and 7 month old baby with us. On our arrival the image was very laid back. So laid back that five nights later we were still there. ( i refused to go home!) It wasn't until the second day we found the owner sue, whom was charming and kept us supplied with jamie olivier's sausages and real ale!
The windmill backdrop was enchanting in the evening as it lit up (switches of at 10.30 prompt) the kids loved feeding the animals and making the scarecrows for the maize maze.
Although the sights of a coach full of oaps driving up the tiny lane to the shop on a jolly boys outing for tea and cakes was quite unexpected whilst i was giving my wife a watering can shower.
We enjoyed ourselves that much that we took our daughter with us a month later. Our friend and kids also joined us and loved it as much as us.
We would definitely recommend staying here if your passing and want somewhere relaxing, peaceful and surreal all mixed together. A cross between the darling buds of may and the deliverance!

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Dorewards Hall this weekend. It's real back to basics stuff, and at £6 a night I would expect nothing more. The toilets worked, the shower didn't but for a weekend it didn't matter. It's an open working farm, usually the children can feed the sheep, goats chickens etc etc and pet the rabbits and guinea pigs, but this weekend restrictions were in place due to the foot and mouth scare. Our children loved it. The little maize maze was great fun-alot of thought had gone into it, and they were doing the tractor-trailer rides again. The shop and tea garden were great also. Technically facilities could be improved and disused areas cleared, but the basic nature of the place is part of it's charm and I wouldn't change anything, apart from maybe to add a swing and slide or 2. The local village has 3 pubs and a social club and a shop with a cashpoint in that's open until 10. There's loads to see and do, and at nearby Beazley End you can find Jamie Oliver's Graduate's (aaron and nicci) pub The Cock which does fab food.

This place is fantastic, we discovered it by chance and have been there every year since 2005 sometimes weekends without the kids, we have 3 kids aged 9,12,14,who really enjoy the camping lifestyle .The owners are polite and there's a nice farm shop where you can buy homemade jams, marmalades etc. There is horses and a small petting part with goats you can feed. The toilets are a bit basic for campers with tents but you get used to it. There is a fishing pond with good sized carp, there's loads of walks in every direction. The pitch site is small but you basically put the tent up where there is room, the kids can go on a tour around the site on along trailer pulled by tractor. We would recomend this site to anyone who just loves no fuss camping, the price is great at around five pounds per tent.

To be honest I only stayed here because we couldn't find anywhere else near London that wasn't fully booked last Aug' bank holiday. I did enjoy this site as I like to go fishing and the lake here is well stocked with carp not sure to what size but certainly up to 10lb. The lake is right by the camping field. The site has lots of farm animals for the young kids to enjoy. The only thing that is a problem is the toilets / showers. The toilet is not very well lit at night and there was only cold water and no shower. They could do with upgrading the toilet block for campers. I like the idea of sites like this as it's nice to get back to basics now and again and it was a cheap site to stay on. Probably best suited for touring caravans with their own tolet / shower. I took some friends with young children who hadn't camped before and they really enjoyed it but it was only for two nights so the lack of showers was just about bearable!

What a beautiful site! Owners were ok, but not friendly. Barked at the kids for being next to fishing lake whilst dad fishing. Toilets were dreadful so take plenty of paper. Not very child fiendly either. Lovely place for couples. Hope this helps

What a wonderful place, arrived at 8.00pm. shown the field where to camp, no set pitches, anywhere you want, lovely shop everything you need apart from milk and gas. Great walks, our children aged 12 & 14 didn't want to come home. Toilets were a let down though, rather dirty and a bit of a walk in the dark, but always plenty of loo paper. No showers, or electric but who could complain at only £4.75 a night. This site will be our most visited this year, but we will be taking our portaloo.
