We had a fantastic time at Mas De La Fargassa. This place completely takes you away from everything. We drove through France with 2 children aged 7 and 4 and it was worth it. Everyone here (mainly Dutch when we stayed and many returning year on year) were so friendly and the surroundings are just fantastic. It was the first time that we could let the kids go off and play without us worrying where they were or what they were up to. The stream was clear and cool. You could walk for miles through the woods. The owners were very helpful and everyone got on like a big family. If you want to relax and truly be away from it all, this is the place to come. The tents were well equipped, the farmhouse shop keeps most staples and there was a good stock of beer and wine if you didn't want to drive into Amelie to get some. We will definitely be going back.

We have just returned from a fantastic and potentially life-changing week at La Fargassa and I simply had to write and spread the news about this absolute gem of a site. The information on the website is very accurate and really does explain exactly what you get and where you are going … but if you want it straight from the horses mouth then here goes …..
La Fargassa is an organic farm in the Eastern Pyrenees right in the middle of nowhere – honestly the nearest town/bar/shop/anything is a good 25 min drive away. So if you like nightlife then read no further! But for us this away-from-it-all location was absolutely superb, however it did cause the only negative aspect of our stay …. my partner didn’t like the 5 mile twisty road up the valley to the farm. I found it okay but I thought I should mention it for any of you who are nervous passengers!
The farm itself was a perfect place to stay, especially if you have children. We stayed in one of the luxury De Waard tents which had everything we needed including a fridge, mattresses and good lighting. It was close to the main farmhouse and no more than 6m from a babbling, rocky stream. We were surrounded by wildlife, birdlife, chirping crickets, cicadas and scratching chickens once they were released at 10am every morning. However, probably the best thing for us was Meera – she was one of the two farm dogs, a Dutch breed similar to a collie. She adopted us for the week and whenever we went walking she came with us and showed us the way. When we returned to the tent she still stayed with us and she even slept outside the tent at night time. There is no other way to explain this except to say that we all fell in love with her and would gladly have brought her home with us – upon leaving there wasn’t a dry eye (or nose in her case!).
The farms location is ideal if you simply want to unwind, splash about in the shallow river, walk down to natural swimming pools and a slide in the river or head out on mountain walks towards the Spanish border. The walking is superb – lots to see, many marked routes and plenty of tree cover to help keep you cool. You can walk all day without seeing a soul – even in your binoculars! Our kids are 12 and 13 and they really enjoyed the walks and the nature we spotted, but younger ones can join you on walks on the farms donkeys if you wish. If you fancy a bit of a change there are some interesting towns nearby and the Mediterranean coast is only an hours drive away.
The owners, Maddy and Shibuti (I hope I spelt them correctly), are lovely and quite unique people – their outlook on life and relaxed manner was really refreshing and is making us re-appraise our own lives now! They are English and Dutch and so were the other visitors when we were there. Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly, and the communal mealtimes were always lively and fun occasions. They cook every night except Sunday and we joined them on four nights – the food was vegetarian, portions were large, it was very tasty and varied – even the kids loved it. They have a small shop in the farmhouse, sell fresh bread and jams and they also operate an honesty jar for wine, beer, soft drinks and ice cream.
However, with Fargassa the total is so much more than the sum of its parts … it really is hard to explain it but the whole experience is quite overwhelming and wonderful. I am sure that we will return soon and are missing the calm, the wildlife and Meera so much already!
