Just got back from Hawthorn Cottage which we used as a base for a long weekend and a visit to the Spring Air Show at Duxford.
Just like to agree with previous reviews and reconfirm what a nice CL this is, and they did not put prices up for Bank Holiday Air Show weekend like some other sites locally.
Pitching area is very well laid out & maintained, there is also an adjacent ‘rally field’. Level concrete pads have been set in the ground onto which you put your wheels, so you only have to level you ‘van in fore & aft. As mentioned previously, each pitch has its own EHU, water tap & waste point. If you bring, say 4m of water hose and same of waste pipe, you will be able to fill up fresh water container and empty waste water directly without any carrying.
Birdsong is exceptional, but once you start listening for it, you become aware of a slight traffic hum in the background, presumably from the M11 about 1 mile away. It is amazing how far this noise travels, but it does not spoil anything, and I guess we cannot have it all ways!
Other than EHU, water and chemical disposal, there are no facilities, so own sanitation is required.
Very dog friendly – no charge. There are nice dog walks on the footpath that connects directly the site.
To sum up: A very attractive CL.

There's not much more to say about this lovely little site really. £11/night for a fully serviced pitch ! Nice walks from the site (the best one being to The plough ph !)Lots and lots to see and do nearby. All set in the beautiful north Essex countryside (No orange people, vagazzles or wideboys here !)
The Morning chorus is very loud here even during a near white out ! We didn't spot any deer - maybe next time.
Will we return ? Definite yes !

We stayed here for a week. Pretty CL but very basic facilities. Water tap and elsan point only, as the owner drains down his water until Easter so wc not in use ( Pitches have own electric and water point in the summer). Adequate for us prefer our own facilities.
Very peaceful only us on site til weekend when two other vans came for a couple of nights. Easy access and pitches defined with concrete strips for caravan wheels. Nice to have this as you won't get crushed in by other units.
Lovely walks from the site, you can walk into the village through a gate at the bottom of site, 5 minutes walk. Village has post office and general store.
We went to the Daffodil Weekend at Thriplow which was great. Went to Cambridge on Park & Ride lovely day out. Saffron Walden is a lovely town with Waitrose. Excellent parking in 2 big car parks. Tesco on outskirts of town. Thaxted worth a visit. Duxford nearby.
Super area with lots to see and do. We were blessed with wall to wall sunshine all week so spent a lot of time walking the dog directly from the site. We will return.

Spent 2 nights here and although the facilities are extremely basic, I would recommend because of the location. Easy 5 minute walk into the village.
Ate at one of the two pubs (the top one is closed on a Monday) and it was very good, but most of the menu I thought was too pricey for pub food(£13-15 for a main).
Lovely village, quite friendly, and the post office has a reasonable range of basics and lovely cakes plus small off licence. Walking from the site is excellent.
Saffron Walden is lovely, historically interesting and all the shops you could need. Massive carpark at Swan Meadow, adjacent to High Street, so parking no problem even with motorhome.
Site was £9 including electric, which I thought was good value.

Disappointing, much less spacious than photos on website imply. Difficult to park large caravan as required and pitch porch awning, due to small boundary fencing and uneven ground. Site generally unkempt, 2 elsan points blocked and at least 1 drainage point blocked. Toilet clean but old, but prefer own facilities. Pleasant village and interesting market with food specialities in nearby Saffron Walden on a Saturday.

This is a CL with a difference – it has fully serviced pitches – which is what attracted me to the site. However, the instructions for driving onto the pitches don’t match up with reality. In fact, it’s actually quite simple – just drive around the edge of the site and then drive onto your pitch which has a concrete strip to give a horizontal level. The location is fantastic – nice and quiet and in easy reach of Cambridge. The toilet isn’t really worth calling a toilet. It’s got a flush but it’s in a shed with no lights. The website advertises mini golf and a boules court but these do not exist so don’t go expecting to find them. The owners are never around and just leave you to your own devices. We won’t be using this site again.

A sweet little site, 4 miles from Saffron Walden, 11 miles from Cambridge. Vans have to be parked in defined locations in a circular arrangement, leaving green space in the middle. Each pitch has its own water tap, EHU and grey water soakaway.
TV reception is terrible, the single toilet is in a sort of metal anderson shelter which has no light or handbasin and is very cobwebby.
That said the site is quiet, within walking distance of pubs. Tesco / Waitrose in Saffron Walden, there is a shop in the village but it is extortionately expensive - £1.59 for a loaf of bread.
Short grass, tidy site and only £7.50 per night for van plus 2 adults. Seemed three out of the five vans were long stay - advanced booking necessary.
Owners have put together a very useful leaflet which has obviously taken a lot of thought and effort. We would visit again if we were in the area.

May 2005 Visited this CL on the early May bank holiday weekend. Set on the edge of a peaceful village within walking distance of the Great Chesterford Conservation Village. Great popular pub next to site (no noise though). Pub has excellent play area and does good food. Site has one toilet with no light or handbasin and it was a bit smelly! Rubbish area adjacent. This was extremely full on our visit with bins overflowing. (Again, only two domestic size dusbtins. Why do CLs only ever have two dusbins?!!) Saw owner once; seemed pleasant enough. Good sized playing areas. Two acre site. Putting and lawn bowling available for use. This is a 'serviced' CL. Would use this CL again.
