This was our first visit to Perigord Noir, finally off the busy motorway, we came through Montignac market Town wonderfully French and historic. With the Vezere river running straight through the Town. We now had no doubt this was the France we came to see. Continuing on a beautiful winding road past La Roque St Christophe, a fantastic (If not the best Troglodyte dwellings in France) to a tiny immaculate village called Tursac. A Chateau pride of place at the top of a hill as you look out North from the camp site entrance.
Left at the signposted site along a wooded shaded drive, we parked at the arrival area, walked to the commanding reception, slightly up the hill, approx twenty meters up loose gravel. Our first welcome was the labrador an extremley friendly old chap, (as we left our two dogs at home) he was a welcome sight. Despite the fuss we gave him the owner pretended he was dangerous, this was quickly laughed off but helped to welcome us to the site.
The owner offered to help erect the tent if needed, and with a Wolf Lake 7 I should have said yes as the heat was in the thirties. Our pitch was up a steep hill, and with a trailer, was at first a concern? but with Caravans higher up than us! I kept the engine on high rev! and it seemed fairly easy.
Every pitch on site was taken, our pitch a large one(ish) was pre booked in February. The tent fitted fine, despite my initial concern, plus the trailer and table at the side, with the car on the front. The ground at this time of year is dusty, very dry, brown earth, with rock hard ground ( you need rock pegs) This is a very quiet site as someone said 11pm - 9. 30am you cant hear a pine needle drop, even campers in the wash areas are quiet.
However, be warned take provisions on arrival, particularly food and drink for the first night! there is no shop! my wife had to buy lemonades from the bar.
The Supermarkets are often closed for lunch and Sundays and Bank Holidays, all three of which we experienced, we thought the best Supermarket was at Le Bugue? yet again another wonderful market Town.
Back on site there is Table Tennis, Trampoline, Tennis court, a small tv room with magazines, all French of course, if you want English buy in the UK before you go! Shops even in big towns don't sell English written mags? if they do? despite searching my wife never found any! total despair!
At the site everything gets very dusty, so keep the tent zipped up or shut the Caravan doors, this is not helped by the site owners whizzing around in their golf buggy, swirling up clouds of dust! normally to collect or deliver a hire fridge, not done on purpose, plus all the camp site car users.
Walking up and down the hill can be hard work after a while in high season, and we were only half way.
The site is well shaded with very tall trees, and most pitches have small shrub borders.
The kids often sat at the patio bar area to connect to the free wifi.
The washrooms and toilets are part new, part old style, but both equally immaculate. Water taps are at key points around the site, but we only buy bottled water for drinking, and boiling for tea and coffee, it is very cheap from the Supermarket.
Entertainment is once a week, very middle of the road, normally someone with an acoustic guitar, think! Roger Whittaker (compliment) and Boar spit roast, a few gulps of wine, and hey presto your on holiday in the sun singing along (best car voice)
The pool I have left to last, no attendants, no supervision, despite the young (8 - 15 year olds) Belgian, French, Dutch, English and a few Germans, being extremely friendly, the slide was used unsafely at times. The edge of the pool has a waterfall type feature, very slippery and yet the kids still walk along the edge. Be aware or be there! we had to keep our kids in check early on, the slide was used by two or three at a time, sideways and hanging over at times, having said that there plenty of foreign voices being raised with the same concerns, but all the kids spend a lot time at the pool socialising.
For a peaceful, friendly, well kept site we adored Le Vezere Perigord, and have fond memories to look back on. It is also very central between all the sightseeing towns, but you will need to drive a fair bit, we drove an extra three hundred miles over two weeks, and loved every minute.
We will go back to Le Vezere just the two us. This year we are going back to Perigord Noir region again. But two sites with more going on, mainly for our teenage kids!
We really recommend Le Vezere Perigord.

Having spent several years travelling further South in France this year my Wife and two daughters (13 and 11)decided to try elsewhere in France. What a gem this site tuned out to be. Although not exactly on the river as in the brochure it is at the top of a cliff with the most spectacular views of the surrounding valley. Directly below the the site is access to the river for canoes and is accessible by car/van/camper etc. Or if feeling fit you can walk to the water.
The site itself is on a very steep hill and the upper pitches are probably more suited to smaller tents but the reservation system does ask for the size of unit. I have an Outwell Wolf Lake 5 and the pitch took the tent and pup tent and car easily.
The site has full sized tennis court and a couple of table tennis tables which are under cover and the equipment is free to use. There are also two very popular trampolines next to the good sized swimming pool. These trampolines were inhabited by all the children on site until dismantled at 10pm every night. There is organised entertainment one night a week which goes on until midnight but apart from that I think this is the quietest site I have ever been on in France silence by 11 and nobody seemed to stir till about 9.30(bliss)
The toilets were well kept and cleaned twice a day could be chilly later in year. The surrounding area provided more than enough history/sightseeing/sailing/canoeing/eating/markets (sarlet on a Saturday)than we could fit into a fortnight. The holiday could have been as cheap or expensive to suit anybody's budget. The area is spectacularly stunning and August seems to be fete time in every single village. I would not hesitate to recommend this site to anybody however if you have a caravan or camper you may find the roads on sit a bit steep or over hung with trees so take care.

This was our second campsite in France, and a wonderful introduction to the Dordogne! It is a clean well equipped and site, situated in its own quiet forest just outside the village of Vezerez. Touring pitches share the site with mobile-homes.
Arriving in mid-August we just missed the very busy season but I guess it was at 80% capacity for most of the time. There are two modern toilet blocks that are cleaned twice per day. These are covered but only semi-enclosed and would be very cold in the winter!
Despite inclement weather (it changes so quickly here!) we loved the 8 days we spent here. There is plenty to do in the area if you don't mind driving around mountain roads - though our favourite was canoeing down the Vezerez river: for which we were taken to and from the site. Despite its very rural location, there are several supermarkets within 20min drive and it would be a great base for further exploration. The site has a games room and pool, plus ping-pong area and tennis court - rackets etc. Can be borrowed. We didn't use the restaurant / bar, etc. But there were a couple of evening events, though they didn't disturb us at all. As with virtually every French site there is fresh bread, etc. Available every morning.
The only drawback for us was that most of the site is on a steep hill. As tenters we found even the 'levelled' pitch slightly slanted for sleeping, but more of a problem is the drag up-and-down for toiled / shower / water (toilet blocks half-way up & at the bottom of the hill) and swimming pool, etc (at the bottom of the hill.). It didn't help that we were given a pitch at the top of the hill! One tip if you have older kids who can be a little independent is to bring walkie-talkies which we found invaluable and saved our legs!
However, apart from the hill this site has become something of a bench-mark by which we measured the four other sites we stayed at this year. We would certainly come here again.
