Three star site set in the Reserve Naturelle du Val d’Allier.

A very pleasant little site set on the banks of the Allier river in the midst of a long Nature Reserve.

The site has a bar and restaurant, basic menu but pleasant.

Plots are of various sizes, some hedged, some not … many quite dry and dusty (August), though ours had plenty of grass cover.

Good quality ablutions.

Canoe and Kayak expeditions through the nature reserve could be arranged on site.

We only stayed two nights as our reason for being there was to visit the famous Centre National du Costume de Scene in Moulins …. An astonishing experience for anyone with any interest in theatre, the scenic arts or historical costume.

Our visit coincided with the 400th anniversary of Moliere’s death, and an exhibition of costumes from major productions over the previous forty years or so … beautifully presented and lit … also, the permanent exhibition of Rudolf Nureyev’s personal effects and belongings bequeathed to the nation.

They stage different exhibition every three months or so.

We called in quite by chance for an overnight stop on our way home from the Mediterranean, and found that among others they had half a dozen useful pitches where we didn't need to unhitch the caravan, so we sat in the sun and drank wine, and watched other people roll in.

It's rather a ramshackle sort of place, with wooden buildings and farm machinery, but it proved a welcoming stop. There's a small bar/restaurant with a choice of cooked dishes, perfectly adequate facilities, and a nice situation on a river bank.

It seemed that many Dutch travellers know of it as a stop over on their way south or north, and there were a good number of overnight visitors - but certainly not the sort of place you would ever need to book. There may be a local shop in the village (we didn't look) but it will be a drive of several miles if you need a supermarket or fuel.

Altogether a useful overnight stop if you are passing this way

Stopped here twice, the second time by accident. 'This looks familiar' I said to OH as we rolled in. It's a fairly obvious half-way-to-the-Med stop, on the A77 lower cost route. As previous reviewer said, well laid back, run by a Dutch exile with a tan like leather, the site is a mixture of stop-offs and French fishermen drowning worms in the Allier. Some way from the nearest village.

We stopped off here because of the on site snackbar. To be honest the catering isn't as great as many other sites, which is why I think we'll look for another in the area. The local wine, however, is really good.
