Stayed here having passed a 'Camping' sign near Lochcarron. I didn't realise the camping was at the hotel--happened to ask a member of the hotel staff standing outside if she knew where it was, who just said, 'You can camp HERE if you don't mind chickens'. So I and a motorcyclist pitched up in what I assume was the hotel's chicken paddock--nice flat lush grass, if inevitably a bit spattered with the stuff that comes out of chickens that isn't eggs.
Chickens were of course in full voice from 1st light--which in early August in northern Scotland is before most humans like to be up (certainly those that were in the bar the previous night). Fantastic views over the loch, though.
It cost nothing; but be aware that (assuming what I camped on was indeed the 'campsite'), there don't appear to be any facilities (other than that flat pitch), even compared with other free campsites. Didn't check, but I assume the toilets aren't accessible outwith bar opening times.
The bar of the hotel itself isn't wildly exciting, and was surprisingly empty for a summer Saturday night on a route through which so many tourist destinations are reachable (Skye, Eilean Donan etc.). But obviously, if you do camp here, have a drink or 2 to make it worth their while--they were fine with me charging a 'phone in the bar while drinking, so this is a bonus.

Management response: Just found this review of our 'camp site' on your forum. Can I please point out to everyone that at the strathcarron hotel we do not have a campsite. What we do have is some land that we house our chickens on and if folk don't mind sharing then we are happy to allow them to pitch their tent. It was with some dismay then that I read this review. We do not charge for this and everyone that has stayed to my knowledge has enjoyed the experience. Being right next to the rural railway station of Strathcarron means that it is a convenient stop off if people want to camp before catching the early morning train. We are open from 7am or earlier and encourage campers to come in and use the facilities to wash etc. We ask no payment for this and even stress that there is absolutely no obligation to spend any money in the pub or restaurant. As ex campers ourselves we like to support the whole camping thing. However this review criticizes something in a public domain, that is offered freely and for no gain whatsoever, in fact when campers appear looking for a coffee in the morning they are generally given that freely too! I think it is such a shame that some people feel the need give their negative opinion especially when the provision is there to help and assist people freely. I can see why some places decide that they do not want to allow camping etc when they just get slated for the effort. Anyway enough of my rant. Thanks for listening and apologies but this review really got my goat. Or my hens:-) lol! enjoy the great outdoors:-) |
