This is a well run and friendly site just 15 minutes walk outside the town of Benicarlo. Staff all speak brilliant English and could not do enough to help and make sure everything was as we wanted.

The site is split into two touring areas with a static area between them, more statics are scattered through the site but they are well placed and don't give it a built up feel at all.

There are two pitch sizes, we took the smaller and its more than enough for the van, awning and sitting out space. We did find the pitches are quite short, even vans under 7m were finding some of the pitches not long enough and sticking slightly out - there are plenty of decent length pitches so not sure why you would allocate the shorter pitches to longer vans.

Showers / loos - fairly old but always immaculate, cleaned at least twice a day. Showers were great, good pressure and very hot water. Handwash at the laundry also had free hot water and a couple of washing machines and a dryer.

We didn't use the bar /restaurant, many other did though so must be popular. There are lots of British long term stayers on site and the bar seems very popular with them and has themed nights for fish & chips, paella etc. Etc.

The shop on site sells fresh bread and most baics, including all the popular British brands of beans, mushy peas etc.

There are a couple of gates at the rear of the site that lead to a small lane with direct access to the beach - not sure if locked overnight but the site did feel very safe and secure.

Would agree with the review re ladies showers - you wander out to a full gallery sat at the outside cafe tables - its a bit odd but not much they can do other than rebuild the showers somewhere else.

We thought there was loads to see and do in the area. You can walk along the promenade and be at the harbour and marina in 10 minutes where there are plenty of bars and cafes. The town of Benicarlo is not a tourist resort but it has plenty of cafes, bars and shops. Our experience was that the town was very modern, busy and we felt safe at all times - yes there is waste land but that's the same on the outskirts of most Spanish resorts.

Peniscola is 6 miles along the coast, there is a regular bus or you can cycle along the off road route. Its a beautiful town to visit, surround by water it feels like an island. The tiny cobbled alleyways and street house loads of little shops and bars. Plus there is a great fish market in the harbour. There are loads of hotels and bars all the along the promenade strip between Peniscola and Benicarlo.

Going along the coast to the North there are plenty of small villages and the amazing Delta Ebre, where you can walk, cycle or drive through the salt flats and along the peninsula. We saw flamingos and ibis galore.

There are three supermarkets in Benicarlo, all easy to park with motorhomes, also there is a gigantic Carrefour a mile or so away from the campsite outside the town of Vinaros.

The site was probably 50% full most of the time, lots of long winter stays and as many coming and going for a few nights. The bar was never loud during the late evening, likewise we heard no more barking dogs than we have at any campsite in Spain or Portugal. Our experience was everything was quiet by mid evening.

Prices reduce the longer you stay, €16 a night for a week including ehu was for us great value for money. Would not hesitate to visit again if in the area.

Arrived on site mid April having travelled from an almafra rally in Benidorm, the first thing is that the coordinates given by the camping and caravanning club are incorrect, I stated this at reception and they were aware.

not a lot in the surrounding area except shingle beach. the site is well maintained and plots are large. the entertainment was not really as stated in the camping book, yes the bar and restaurant are open from 9 am to 11pm but the entertainment, like karaoke, started at 10pm and finished at 11pm waste of time, only six people in anyway

Benicarlo is mainly working town not suited to tourists, nearby is another town called Vinaros which was a little bit better but only just. Golf is not nearby and when found far too expensive 80 euros a round?

when bed time came the site itself is quiet but around the perimeter are houses all of which seem to have two dogs where they put them out about 11 pm and they bark all night. When we asked the local residents on site they just said you get used to it, all I can say is take your ear plugs

The wifi on the site is excellent as is the satallite connection we took our sky box and got all channels both English and sky

The site as I've said is lovely it's just where it is and the dogs nearby that let it down, I wouldn't recommend it especially if you have children as there isn't a lot to keep them happy, the pool is very small and not a lot room around it we won't be going back.

This site has expanded over the last few years and is now in the Caravan and Camping book for 2016. The site is British/Spanish family run. The campsite is quite and the staff are very friendly. It has a bar and restaurant which is open from 9am - 10pm and serves a wide range of food, both British and Spanish.

There is a small supermarket where you can get basic items, including fresh bread. (In Benicarlo there are major supermarkets).

The site has good Wi-Fi and there is cabled sat tv available on the pitches providing BBC/ITV/CHL 4 etc (but no SKY SPORTS or EUROSPORTS channels).

The site is quiet and very clean and has a lot of returning visitors. It is a mixture of statics and touring pitches. There are various activities organised during the week.

The pitches are large and some have full service facilities. It is well located to visit Benicarlo.

You can walk along the sea front to the town, about 20/25 minutes, or about 10 minutes on a bike. It is about 5 minutes from the pebbled beach. Benicarlo is a busy town with all facilities needed. Shops, restaurants, market etc. It is well worth a visit. There is a regular bus service to Peniscola, which is also well worth visiting.

The site is situated between Valencia and Barcelona and is ideal as a short or long term stopover. II found this campsite very welcoming and friendly and would visit again.

Just returned from a grand tour of Europe covering 7 countries and 3000 miles. Of all the campsites visited, this is the first one I an inclined to review for reasons I will now explain.

Firstly, I would like to just say that this website was a life saver, all overnight locations were found and organised through this site so if you are reading this then you have come to the right place. On the most part, we agreed completely with the reviews, that is apart from this campsite.

We arrived late afternoon having contacted the campsite the day before via email and were greeted on arrival. Bar area looked great and staff seemed friendly and welcoming. So much so we paid up front for 4 nights. We given the freedom of choosing a space and letting them know. Plenty to choose from, all pitches separated by lovely flowering hedgerows but on the downside, specifically for those travelling by tent, the ground is covered in gravel. It actually punctured our ground sheet.

In terms of the location, the campsite does back onto a gravelly beach but we did not find it inviting enough to stroll along it. You are far better off travelling 10 mins south to Peniscola where there is more your typical Spanish holiday resort beach. The road in to the campsite off the highway was also a bit of an eye opener, I have never seen so many ladies sat under parasols in lay-bys during the day. The town 5 mins north had metal bars on every window and very sturdy shutters, looked something akin to South Central LA.

In terms of facilities, toilets and showers were above average but it is the location of them I had an issue with. The doors to the showers open into the bar/restaurant area. A couple of times the door was left open and I came out of the shower cubicle half dressed to be greeted by diners.

All this aside, the evenings entertainment kicked in which, as it turned out, was a party for one of the many English static caravan residents. An evening meal for us was out of the question as we were told there would be an extremely long wait, the bar area was packed. We went off site for some diner and tired from the days travelling returned to soak up some more of the atmosphere. A very good singer was entertaining the crowd on our return, but it was quite loud and with the tourers being in close proximity to the bar we had little choice but to sit and watch. It finished sometime after 2300hrs but just as we were thinking about turning in, the karaoke kicked in. We stuck it out for as long as we could and even though it looked like it would have been a great laugh if you were actually part of the family, we decided we needed to try and get some sleep. A very sleepless night followed.

The following night was much of the same. We came to the conclusion, this was a site geared towards those that own their own static home, rent one or maybe bring a motorhome or caravan. I would not recommend camping here under canvas, you will not get much sleep.

We toured around Europe chasing the sun and the forecast changed on the second day with storms closing in on our route. Travelling by motorbike is no fun in thunderstorms. For this reason coupled with the niggles we experienced we asked if it would be possible to get a refund on the last 2 days. I must stress, this was based solely on the weather because we were quite happy to stick it out as we had discovered some nice places to visit during the day.

Our request for a refund was turned down and the atmosphere towards us from the point on seemed to changed. We were no longer served as quickly and the welcoming atmosphere soon started to dissipate. We stayed one more night then chose to forgo the fee for the final night and left.

In fairness, the site had some good points. It depends on what you are expecting. The campsite was more like a self contained holiday park like a version of butlins but on a much smaller scale. Entertainment is great but very loud and not so good if you are in a tent. The pool is ok, small but adequate, it has an adequately stocked small shop, cheap wine and beer. I like the layout of the pitches, nice and private but not so keen on the gravel flooring.

We would not stay here again and would not recommend this to any of our friends.

Location - 1/10 - Lay-by ladies!

Facilities - 7/10 - Good clean toilets and showers, location was a little odd.

Customer - 5/10 - Initially very friendly but our personal experience did go down hill.

Child Friendliness - 8/10 - Pool, and entertainment great for kids but noisy for them at night.

Value for Money - 7/10 - Down to personal preference, average for most sites.

Overall Rating - 4/10 - Again, personal preference but for us, camping is supposed to be peaceful and relaxing, if I wanted this type of package I would book go for a package deal.

Stopped off here for one night. Very friendly and made very welcome.

Reasonably priced site. Excellent power shower. 1 min to the beach so good to walk the dog.

Didn't have a chance to check out the area as we were too tired.

We have stayed at Camping Alegria Del Mar since 2002. Each winter we look forward to returning and over the years have been very pleasantly surprised at the improvements they have made.

The new toilet and shower blocks, the extensions to the bar. As the girls have grown up and now got families of their own they are all involved in the site making it a truly family owned site. We always get a very warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble for them. Sadly we couldn't make it last winter but we are counting the days to our next visit.

Their Christmas and New year package is excellent value for money. The long stay discount prices are the best we have found through Spain.
