Have just returned from 2 weeks in Les Dunes and we had a fab time. Everything we went for is close by although the 'walk' to the beach is a strenuous connection with little children. Our walk was along narrow path ways. Which wouldn't be any good for a buggy. That said Les Conches and La Terrirer beaches have ample free parking if you are there before 2pm (or the french!)
Our tent pitch was sandy and covered in twigs and fur cones. This wasn't so bad but the sand got EVERYWHERE. We were also left with a tent covered in tree sap.
The toilets and showers were ok. The water pressure dropped when someone flushed the toilet! You need to constantly remember toilet paper too There is also no soap to wash hands with so be vigilant with youngsters.
We didn't bother with the bar or entertainment but it was loud and went on till midnight.
Lastly. You need speedos in the pool!
We probably wont be staying there as it was a bit rough around the edges for a 4 star and there are better sites in the area.
We stayed here for 4 nights on a trip around Italy and France. It is a lively and compact site where the pitches are quite closely packed compared to other French sites BUT we had a fantastic time. The staff were all friendly, the bar and pizza restaurant was brilliant after a day at the beach.
The facilities were always spotlessly clean although at peak times the water pressure wasn't up to much in the showers. One weird thing is that our nearest toilet block was closed after 10.30pm but the main toilets were open all night and were of a similarly high standard and only a few seconds walk from the other closed facilities so this was not a problem.
The clientèle was mostly French but there were few Dutch, German and Brits on site and there were a lot of families and groups of all different ages. This meant that the site had a good atmosphere and despite some concerns about noise everything went quiet after 11pm every night without fail!
The site is within easy walking distance of a stunning beach (10/15 mins) which is perfect for surfing and body boarding but it is the Atlantic so wetsuits were needed even in August! One word of caution however - there are very strong currents and rip tides so only strong swimmers / surfers should attempt the sea here. We are both experience swimmers / surfers and were worried by some of the currents ourselves so would not recommend letting children go into the sea unsupervised.
That said however, there is a good supervised swimming area about 20mins walk up the beach with several vigilant lifeguards on duty all day. Also the campsite has 2 pools (one indoor) which were plenty big enough for those with young children and there were some brilliant slides for the older children (and adults!) so the beach shouldn't put you off.
Lastly, there is some fantastic cycling all along the coast here and the site does have a large number of bikes and tandems for hire which makes for a fab day out.
