Just come back from lazonby pool had a fantastic time and weather was good, the staff were lovely and very helpful there was 3 adults 3 children and 2 chihuahuas and we all enjoyed it and are definitely booking again for next year, taking another family of four with us

 Very peaceful site, wonderful setting.

Fantastic for children with great play area & swimming pool at a reasonable price.

Shower facilities could perhaps be improved, cubicles would be much nicer than a shower curtain.

Found all volunteers most helpful & friendly.

Well stocked Co-op & 2 pubs 5 mins away from site walking.

Can't wait to book in for next year!

We have visited this site a couple of times and absolutely LOVE it. We took 5 children aged 7-13 and they loved it too. The playground and pool kept them entertained for the weekend that we were there although it probably helped that the weather was great. The walkway next to the site was perfect for walking our dog although I was disappointed that other dog walkers seem to feel that leaving poo-bags hanging on the bushes is acceptable.

The road at the side of the pool onto the site is rather tight and vans wider than ours could have problems. Also the children were rather dubious at walking in the dark to the toilets on a night.

All in all I think the site is great value for money the only problem that I have with it is that this formerly undiscovered gem is getting so popular it's always fully booked whenever we want to visit.

After reading the 2009 review we decided to give this site a go. We know the area fairly well - so we booked in and we stayed for a week in august 2012- and all I can say is its great and a vast improvement from the previous review in 2009 !

The site is operated by the lazonby community-

IE -the village volunteers look after the site and clean the facilities, they run the campsite and do this to support the running costs for the open air swimming pool.

We arrived in lazonby which is a lovely village in the eden valley 7 miles from penrith and the M6- its approx 25 mins drive to ullswater.

The site check in is done via the midland hotel in the village centre- check in was warm and friendly and they serve a good pint too!

We were then directed to the site about 3 minutes drive away. The site is beside the river and down by the open air swimming pool, you follow the track across from the pool to the camping field, I agree with the first review if you have a big unit or a wide c'van access may be tight. But we had no issues with our 18 foot c'van.

We were told we could pitch up anywhere- I guess there is enough space for about 12 to 15 units total. There are approx 10 electric hook up points, so we selected a spot and pitched up and plugged in,

The camping field is level and the grass was short, the site has a river to one side with a public footpath and riverside walks. To the other side you have a grassy area which leads to a newly installed children's playground which is fantastic.

The pool is open daily and costs about £3 a swim. There is also a poolside cafe selling teas and coffees all day and even a full breakfast and swim special on a Sunday morning.

The camping field has a fresh water point and also fire fighting equipment in the centre of the field but that is about it. The remainder of the facilities are a 2 minute walk away back up at the open air swimming pool area. Here are the toilets and showers which are shared with the swimming pool users, and also the washing up facilities, bins and the chemical disposal point.

When the pool closes in the evening the toilet/ shower facilities are available for campers exclusively.

The facilities are ideal, if a bit ' municipal' - but there are 2 showers and all the hot water you could ask for. Night or day.

The new wash up area is in a timber lean to at the rear of the pool, again with loads of hot water.

It is a 2 minute walk from the camping field to the toilet area. And you do need a torch at night. As its unlit

Lazonby and the eden valley are great, the little village has a co -op shop selling all the basics you will need, penrith is 7 miles away with everything else !

Lazonby is on the settle to carlisle rail line so we were graced with 3 steam specials running through the village over the week- a great sound of the steam train running through the valley.

You are ideally located for the eden valley, hill walking, the northern lakes, keswick is 40 mins drive and ambleside is a similar drive if you dare go over the kirkstone pass route !

Overall the site is great, very laid back, and very dog friendly. The field is next to the river and is ideal for a chilled/ relaxed stay, the stars at night were amazing too !

- the open air pool and the playground is a bonus if you have children, our 7 and 8 yr olds thought it was fantastic and it was safe enough for them to go about on their bikes too.

Value for money, you cant beat it. Its a great place to pitch up and to be used as a base to explore cumbria, the lake district, and surrounding areas. We will be going back to this site.

I would recommend this campsite for an overnight stop only. It is in a very pretty location beside a fast flowing river. There are plenty of footpath walks round about making it a good location for walkers / hikers. The village has a Coop within walking distance and we enjoyed a reasonably priced meal in one of the pubs - The Midland Hotel.

In fact, because the site names the Midland Hotel, we expected the site to be near to it. Whereas it is just outside the main village on a bend where there is an open air swimming pool.

The entrance to the campsite is a tight squeeze especially for larger caravans having, beyond the gate,a tree at one side and a stone wall at the other. You then have to drive across a field to arrive at the small campsite.

The only facility on the campsite is a water tap. The toilets, shower and sluice are back in the swimming pool area. (a trek across the other field and down the path) As there is no lighting on the site or the field, a torch is essential when venturing out at night or to use the facilities in the swimming pool for which a key is provided. There is no playground although the outdoor swimming pool was open during our 2 nights stay.

Things I particularly did not agree with are that there is a standard rate charge whether you have ehu or not; the grass was very long and in need of a cut, the one water tap had a permanent leak (very wasteful) making the ground boggy around it. One motorhome became stuck in a large rut and at least one caravan found it difficult to drive off the boggy ground. I dare say it is much easier when the sun shines
