A quiet, spacious and near level site, reached off the A40 by minor but wide roads. It is all grass (a bit on the long side when we went - lost a star) with water and hook-ups to pitches. We stayed for 6 nights, with no-one else in our field until two other caravans arrived at the weekend. There was another small area (looked private) near the house with people present in a couple of caravans - I saw lights but never met them.

In the main field were about 10 unoccupied static (or abandoned touring) caravans, some of which were semi-derelect. Unfortunately some were taking up nice positions. They needed removing, but meanwhile they lent an "atmosphere" to the quietness, especially if you stood in the open in middle of the field at night to gaze at the stars in the silence.

The toilet and disposal facilities were adequate, which is all I am interested in on site. There were no other "attractions" (shop, bar, cabaret, fun-fair etc) anyway - suits me. For shops, it's Haverfordwest. This is the type of site I prefer, but not everyone is the same.

We used the site as a base for seeing the area (Tenby, St Davids etc) and did not spend much time on site. There are several pubs for eating nearby, one where you turn off the A40, a large steakhouse pub on the nearer side of Haverfordwest, and the Wolfe Inn a couple of miles North up the A40 (which was very good). There is a walkable (half mile) pub at Spittal, although I didn't try it.

We have just spent 11 nights at Oakvale and were very impressed with this small, very peaceful and well kept site which is about 7 miles north of Haverfordwest on the edge of the village of Spittal.

Getting there is no problem, the 2 miles of country roads to the site off the A40 are wide enough for a caravan and tractor to pass with no problems as we found out! The site is far enough off the A40 to be away from any road noise. It has lovely views south and westward towards Haverfordwest with the lights of Milford Haven on the distant horizon.

The site itself is lovely grass, is for caravans and motorhomes only and has quite few seasonal pitches. It also has a dedicated storage area. The field is generally level (the odd chock may be needed) and has electric hook-ups and plenty of water points. The loos and showers are clean and tidy at all times and as the site is small I never had to wait at any point during the stay. We paid £12 per night inc electric while we were there which was a bargain (2 adults, 3 children & a dog).

The attraction of this site is its peace and quiet – it’s just a field and our 3 children loved being able to play to their hearts content. Great for stargazing at night, no artificial lights anywhere near and it was literally silent!

The owners Mr & Mrs Morgan are very helpful and always on hand for any assistance. There is a pub about 10mins walk away in the village of Spittal and one about 5mins drive away on the A40, both good.

There is no shop on-site and as far as we could tell none in the village either but Haverfordwest has all the shops/take-away's etc you will ever need with an Aldi, Lidl, Morrison’s and Tesco for provisions/fuel etc. If you like Fish & Chips, try ‘Something’s Cooking’ in Letterston about 5 miles up the A40 towards Fishguard - very nice!

The site is well situated for exploring lovely Pembrokeshire, everywhere seems to be within ½ hrs drive; Fishguard and Cardigan are lovely and St David’s is beautiful - even Tenby is less than an hour away.

For those that don’t know, the area is very like Cornwall in terms of landscape and narrow high sided lanes but unlike Cornwall you don’t get ripped off here – we never paid more than £3 for a days parking, usually less and there was plenty of it at all the tourist areas and beaches, even things like ice-creams were pretty cheap!

There are a few theme and activity parks nearby (Oakwood, Heatherton) but we never needed to go anywhere near them although we regret not making time to visit Scolton Manor just a mile or so away from the site.

The beaches are stunning – Newgale (approx 10 miles) and Whitesands (about 15 miles near St David’s) and Broad Haven (10 miles SW) are probably some of the finest I have ever been on here or abroad – billiard table flat, spotless and ultra-safe, a surfers and body-boarders paradise. Most beaches have areas where dogs are allowed too, even in high season.

Although we went in high season at no time did anywhere seem over-crowded even on the fantastic sunny days we spent on the beach. On both our drive there and home to Swindon we pitied the hordes queuing on the M4/M5 intersection as they crawled their way down to the south-west, hopefully we will return to Oakvale and Pembrokeshire in the future.

The site is conveniently located a mile or two off the main A40 Fishguard route, just west of Haverfordwest. The minor road that leads to the site is reasonably wide and presents no problems for touring caravans.

We had the pleasure of staying here for four nights. The owners, Mr and Mrs Morgan, could not have been more helpful, good people with a great site. Spotless toilet and shower facilities (which are free to use) and a large, level field with good drainage. No bogging down here. The Southerly aspect of the site ensures you get all the Sun that is available. Great views across farmland toward Pembroke and Fishguard.

Previously, a Garden Nursery, ill health has curtailed the commercial side of those activities but they do offer seasonal vegetables grown on site for campers.

The village of Spittal is a small, friendly, rural community and what it lacks in retail outlets, more than makes up for in its picturesque charm. There are quite a few walks and bridle paths leading to and from the village.

The village Pub, The Pump on the Green, is about a half mile or so from Oakvale and a level walk. The beers are varied and at very good prices and it also serves a selection of food, all home-made, again at good prices. A traditional village Pub with a great atmosphere.

Spittal is conveniently situated for touring this beautiful part of Pembrokeshire with the main town of Haverfordwest a ten minute drive away. The town of Fishguard with the Ferry service at Goodwick and the City of St David's are equally easy to reach by road.

One nearby local attraction not to miss is Scolton Manor. A quote on their literature says, 'The best two pounds I've ever spent', that sums it up. Something for all the family.

All in all, Oakvale is a great place to base yourself for walking or touring in this part of Wales.
