Found this site to be clean as others have said the toilets could do with an up date, the site could be a bit noisy with the trains running all night this was forgotten due to the wonderful views across the Rhine and watching the cruise boats going pasted all day.If you are lucky you may even see one lite up at night. Rolls and bread could be ordered for the morning. The only problem we could see was you needed cash to make payment. Would go back again

To find site:- The site is off the B9 south of Koblenz and about 5kms before Boppard. The site is well signed from both directions.
I think with this site its a case of location, location, location! The location is superb being right alongside the Rhine. However you do get the impression that the site management trade on this a bit as a reason for not improving the facilities. When we arrived in early / mid June it was clear the grass had not been mown for several weeks, although a start was made on the second day of our stay! The swimming pool is not available until the higher season fees kick in. The toilet block whilst perfectly adequate, could do with an upgrade. There is a second block with showers (locked during our visit) plus a washing up / laundry area. Although the toilets are centrally located some pitches are a long way, away. Pitches are not marked in any way which is fine in the low season but could cause problems when the site is full. Electric points I was informed by reception are 16amps, which seems to be borne out by the appliances we could use but mysteriously some of the electric boxes mention 4amps! Water points are dotted around the site. There is a restaurant/bar on site which has a nice terrace next to the river. Reception does not keep extended hours but the barriers are not closed so the form seems to be to find a place and check in when reception is open. The real downside of this site is the intrusive noise from the busy railway lines on both sides of the river with the one next to the site being about 100 metres away on some pitches. During the low season the site accepts the ACSI Card but watch the dates. The site does not have any form of internet connection. This site only accepts payment in cash.
There are many opportunities for excursions up and down the Rhine Gorge. There are excellent transport links and good cycle ways. For food shopping Boppard is close by. Alternatively you could just sit and watch the river transport.

My wife and myself, both in our 60s, stayed 5 nights at this site with our touring caravan in May 2008. I contacted them by email and my contact, with Sabine Muller at the site, was conducted in simple English. I’m not sure whether Sabine is the owner or manager but she was very helpful. When I let her know that we might be arriving after 7.00pm I was told to just find a pitch and check in next morning. She also advised me on the best approach to the site with a caravan.
Location and surrounding area
Camping Sonneneck is on the side of the river Rhine off the B9 road app 5km from Boppard and 3km from Rhens. The river is in a steeply sided valley with vineyards and many old castles along the slopes which makes it very picturesque and interesting. The line of the river is a main transport route, with a road and railway following the line of the river on both sides. There are also well surfaced level cycleways on both sides of the river, ideal for casual and keen cyclists alike. Along the river numerous large boats with bars and snack-bars on board offer cruises. At least one does an evening cruise and dance. Some are floating hotels doing extended cruises. Exploring both sides of the river is easily done by driving to one of the ferries and taking the car over the river – 2 adults & car app 5 euros. Incidentally, a car and caravan can be taken over on the ferry. The river Moselle is near enough for a day trip and well worth a visit.
The Campsite
Access to the site is from the B9 and is easy via either (dependant on your direction of approach) of two downward sloping slip roads
The site itself is level with well cut grassy pitches. Pitches are not individually marked but when we were there – over a busy German Bank Holiday weekend, units were not packed too close together. It may be different in high season. Roads around the site are of tarmac. Tarrifs were very reasonable though pitches on the edge of the river carry an additional charge.
The site is larger than we originally realised as it is long and narrow (ish) situated between the river, the road and then railway. Pitches nearer to the road may experience some noise from the railway. Having said that we were near the road and didn’t find the rail / road traffic too obtrusive. Note: Nearly all the campsites along that stretch of the river are similarly positioned i.E. River, campsite, road, railway.
A note too for anglers. The Rhine is a fast flowing river so any fishing would need to be done by heavy ledgering.
Facilities
Most pitches seemed to have electric hook up points but worth checking for tents. Toilets, showers, laundry and dishwashing areas were very clean and well maintained with plenty of hot water. Showers are in cubicles and free. The gents washing and shaving area is communial but my wife tells me that the ladies area has separate cubicles.
There is a decent sized outdoor swimming pool and children’s pool. Neither was in use when we were there. Probably too early in the season. There is a grassy children’s play area with some equipment. The gently sloping “death-slide” seemed to be popular.
A focal point is the restaurant with its riverside terrace. We didn’t eat there but reports we had from people who had were good. It has a nice ambience and is a proper restaurant not a snack-bar. I believe they do takeaway meals.
There are 2 Supermarkets app 3km from the campsite, also a Bank and other shops etc. Bread can be ordered at reception for morning collection from the campsite restaurant
About getting there.
I had driven across Belgium and headed towards Aachen picking up the A61 in Germany and then driving south. I was unsure about the best exit from the A61 for Rhens. The approach reccomended to me by Sabine was to exit at the junction with the 327 for Rhens. This is because the river is in a steeply sided valley and some approaches may be unsuitable for caravans. Worth checking, especially if you use Sat Nav. I have driven all over France over the last 10 years but here’s a tip if you’ve never driven in Germany. Maps show road numbers as e.G. A61, A44 etc but road signs show only the number i.E. 61, 44. OK, simple you might think but after travelling through Belgium with all road signs showing the road letter and number plus the E Route number you’re suddenly confronted with a sign bearing only a number and no E Route number. This happened to us quite suddenly after we’d crossed the border into Germany and we missed our turning.
Just in case you're curious we drove straight there from Calais and, with breaks, it took app7+hrs Hope you find this review helpful and will provide more info if possible.
