Camping Les Tourelles is on the south western edge of Embrun, and just north east of Lac Serre-Poncon. It is about 1km from N94. The site has many shady pitches, though from some, especially on the edge, there are wide views of the surrounding mountains. Further up the valley is the interesting town of Briancon, whilst just outside the town is the huge Lac Serre-Poncon, which has every kind of water sport you could think of, as well as some beaches to relax on, and a great drive (quite a few kms) right round it with spectacular views and including the eco-musee display which describes how this hydro-electric resource was built over 50 years ago. Embrun is served by a very comfortable rail service (we took the regional train into Briancon one day, and enjoyed lunch out in the old town - get a bus up from the station), the station is 20 mins walk from the campsite. There is a market in Embrun and a lot going on, especially musically.
Description
At the camp site gate, walk up to reception, don't bother with the call button at the barrier, it doesn't seem to get answered.
The reception building hosts the untidy office, but it seems to work and the staff, mainly family, seem to speak most languages.
There is a good track, in parts tarmac, winding through the site. The pitches vary from open, to part-shaded to fully shaded and we had room for our campervan and Khyam shelter, which serves as our awning.
Facilities
At the height of the season, which our visit was, there is pressure on the number of electric points and you'll need a long lead in some cases. There are lots of shower, washing and toilet facilities, spread over a number of buildings dotted round the site. Beware though, there is only one washing machine.
There is a small pool, ideal for children to cool off, but you won't have room to practice for the next Olympics. By the pool is a cafe/bar where you order and collect bread; lunch time there are chips available and at the weekend in the evening pizzas can be taken away, if ordered first. Some entertainment may be laid on; this seems to be on an ad hoc basis, we had a great evening with a group of Senegalese musicians and dancers and a French trombone player who just happened (brilliantly) to jam with them. Entertainment apart, even though we were there at the height of the season, it was quiet at night. There is also WiFi (included in price) available at the cafe.
Conclusion.
The site is run by a French man, his Scottish wife and their family. They are very helpful, friendly and have put a lot of thought into creating a camp site able to cater for quite a few campers, yet never seem busy or overcrowded. The area has much to offer, for walks, climbs, drives, boating and outings and this site makes a good base for a long stay.
