Pub with a campsite in a field at the back. Nice enough Pub but the food is overpriced and the choice limited.
New wet rooms, one with disabled access. Unfortunately there are only 2 of these unisex toilets/wet rooms which for our group of 20+ was not enough. I suppose because it’s normally CC only the Pub presumes campers have their own toilets.
No washing up area just a cold tap.
Then we found out that the Pub was shut all day on Saturday. OK, CC members would bring their own food and we are not part of the CC. But if you have agreed to host a group and you have a years notice, why can’t you make a few sandwiches or serve beer?
A shame that in a heatwave visitors and campers can’t even get a cold drink because the Pub is shut. They could not serve breakfast either.
So OK for a stopover but lacking in facilities for a longer stay.

Just had 5 nights at this little site. First the good points: It is set in an almost idyllic setting in a lovely village in a lovely area in Dorset, with plenty of things to see and do not too far away. There is a water tap by the first pitch, and (this must be a joke!) a plastic washing-up bowl attached by string to a stainless steel base unit – I assume this was the washing-up facility! The main facilities were at the back of the pub and although not new, were perfectly adequate for the size of the site and quite clean. One ‘undesignated’ toilet, one toilet designated ‘Ladies’, and a small communal bathroom with toilet, wash basin and electric shower. There were also waste emptying points (grey water, black water and refuse).
The pub is a lovely single-roomed country inn with a very limited food menu, but they do ‘specials’ which most people went for – One-pot surprise on Wednesday, Tapas on Thurs and fish & chips on Friday. These were served wrapped in paper just like you get them from the chippy – quite novel and excellent value at £7.
Now the negatives: All the facilities apart from the water (and washing-up facility!) were just behind the pub, which is around 100 meters from the camp site. After a while, this became a little impractical, especially on the one day when it rained for most of the day. The access into the site is a track which is part stone/gravel and part grass/mud, but the main issue is that there is a farm-type gate from the track to the road which does not stay open by itself – either has to be propped open with something or held by a second person.
Although not about the site per se, the pub does not open on Monday (quite common for country pubs), and does not open till 7. 00pm the rest of the week (6. 30 on Friday). If, like me, you like a pre-prandial pint or three, forget it or you have to drive elsewhere.
As has been said, approach the village via the A357 – it is well signposted.

Good job I had read the reviews about access to the site as the other road in would be impossible. Signs to the site are reassuring after a long drive, maybe more needed.
Pitches on grass with nearby water tap, grass not cut, but that means no cuttings being walked in, but very wet shoes.
Didn't find a shower, toilets clean and adequate but poor flush. Seemed a long trek from pitch.
Dogs welcome in pub, didn't try any food as problems with kitchen re fit.

Nice rural site on grass 100m behind the pub. Electricity on all pitches and fresh water tap next to the first pitch. CDP and hot showers, toilets at rear of pub. Nice pub serving good ales and food. We didn't eat but saw others having the fish & chips which looked good.
Warning about approaching the site : enter Staunton Caundle village from the A357 turning at the brown tourist sign 'the Trooper Inn', other routes into the village from the A30 are very narrow with little or no places to pass oncoming vehicles and some very low hanging branches.
We enjoyed our one day there and were able to get in at late notice (during August).

This is a first class venue
We have stayed here twice this year already
We were fortunate enough to stay during the Trooper Inn Beer festival.
Take advantage of the Fish & Chip evening on Fridays - Excellent!
We hope to be visiting the Trooper Inn again in the near future as a stay here is highly recommended.
The owners are fantastic hosts and nothing was too much trouble!

We spent August Bank Holiday in the campsite of this quiet friendly traditional pub in a tiny village in North Dorset.
The landlord is friendly, relaxed and easy-going. The facilities are good quality but there are no showers or washing-up sink (maybe some coming in 2011 though). There's lots of play things for the kids. Lots of public footpaths near by. Sea about half an hour away by car. We all would recommend if you want to avoid those huge packed sites. Worth just mentioning you need to park cars in parking spaces short stroll from field but can drive in to unload etc........!

We had a great stay here. The pub is small, very friendly and serves good food. The campsite just behind the pub is a small field but our group (3 family tents) fitted nicely! Few others were staying in the big field behind. There is no shower facilities (good pool though in Blanford Forum!) but the toilets are actually plush for a campsite because they are like a pub loo! The kids loved it as there is slide, playhouse etc. In garden. Some nosy hens too. Recommend if you want lovely country location away from the crowds and a nice pub right there! No shops in walking distance. We told the landlord a washing up sink would be useful. Excellent value and a really relaxed camping experience. The views are great and we even flew our kite in the big field at the back too.
