Arrived on spec with ACSI card, we were one of two vans on the site. They had just opened!
Friendly welcome, nicely laid out small site with pitched defined by hedges.
Smart and clean new toilet block. Easy walk into St Jean de Maurraine, nice town with plenty of small shops and for penknife afficionadoes the Opinel museum!
No WiFi at the pitches. Quiet site, lots of local walks etc.

Yes this site seems to favour cycle nuts! I say that because the place is surrounded by spectacular mountains and I (who rides a bike only on the flat!) can't imagine what stamina is needed to ride a bike around here. But they do! And a lot of them seem to enjoy it! The site is well maintained and the fascilities are clean and well looked after. The local village is a little dull and doesn't hold any fascination for me but as an overnight stop I can't find anything to moan about. We stayed at the site on our way from Italy in to France and as a break in our journey it was well chosen. Recommend this site for its fabulous views, cleanliness, good bar and cafe, relaxing reading room and great fascilities.

We used this campsite en route to Italy.
The campsite is on the edge of a nice little town with a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Surrounded by alpine peaks the campsite is spacious, flat and well maintained. The pitches are split into two areas, one with electric for caravans and motorhomes and one further into the site for tents. Pitch sizes are adequate and you can pick your own.
Reception is at the entrance. If reception is closed you are invited to find a pitch and then let reception know where you are when it opens. The staff were friendly and helpful. The reception building also houses a small snack bar, bar, tv lounge and library. There is also a bicycle hire place with workshop and lots of information about rides and walks in the area.
The utility block is in the centre of the site and is large, clean and well maintained.
There is a good children's play area and wifi is availabe (€5 for 24 hours).
Just outside the entrance to the site there is a bar/pizzeria if you don't want to walk too far for a meal.

To Find Site:-On the approach to St Jean de Maurienne the campsite is signed. Just watch out for the entrance in from the main road.
Des Grand Cols has a superb location surrounded by mountains, There are about 80 pitches which are all on grass except for few special parking bays near the entrance for motorhomes. The main section of pitches are on the same level as reception and they have individual water and waste connections. There are also 16amp electrical connections. There are a couple of higher terraces which seem to be for tents without the waste and electrics. All pitches are of a good size but one or two have trees in awkward positions. The Reception area also includes a bar area which is open in the main season, there is also a TV room. The toilet block is modern and to an excellent quality although it has seatless toilets and no paper provided. Chemical toilet disposal is a bit Heath Robinson as you have to used the motorhome dumping point. To one side of the site is a large play area which is also used by the locals. We found the people running the site both friendly and helpful and they speak English. Should there be no one at reception when you arrive you are invited to select a pitch and report to reception later. The ACSI Card offers a useful discount at this site during the low season although there is a slight, and worthwhile supplement of €1.50 for the 16amp electrics in addition to the ACSI price. The site had only just opened for the season when we arrived so they were still waiting for the local Council to cut the grass on the pitches!
The town centre of St Jean de Maurienne is only a short walk from the campsite. We found two supermarkets, one actually in the centre and a Champion on the outskirts, the latter having fuel. Reception will supply a town map. Although this campsite deserves a longer stay it is also a useful stop over point to and from Italy either using the Tunnel de Frejus or the Mont du Cenis Pass. For those staying longer many of the Cols used during the Tour de France are within easy reach.
