This is a super little site located in a lovely rural setting.

It has a small swimming pool, spotless toilet and shower facilities. We have been back every year for the last ten years, usually four times a year.

The owners are a very nice multilingual Dutch husband and wife who go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.

The water supply is from a bore hole, (not mains), and so the owners recommend bottled water for drinking, ( no problem for us we filter all water before drinking)

We stayed one night when travelling home from Portugal hoping to stay a little longer to explore the area. The site is in a lovely location, with a beautiful view and extensive rules and local information.

However we found the sanitary facilities a little challenging. Water is from a well, and this is not made clear on the website, so bottled water must be used for drinking( this was our first site in Portugal where we could not drink ( filtered) tap water, even in rural areas). Luckily we did have some bottled water on board as we had been staying in a hotel the previous week for an event. The reception does sell bottled water.

Water ( and its treatment) is clearly an issue ( understandably). No toilet paper (not provided) is allowed in the toilets, and must be put in a bin ( not great if you have any sort of bowel condition, and not pleasant if you use the loo after someone else, no matter how frequently it is emptied). Not sure how this works when you want to empty your own on board loo ( although the chemical disposal point was not well signposted. ). Also, you need to fill up before you go into the site as filling any on board tank needs to be by individual container. Normally not an issue for us, but because we had been in a hotel for a week, we could have done with fresh tank of water( we made do with 2 watering cans full) and moved on the next day. Washing machine access is via reception I. E. Not in the sanitary block, again not clear on the website.

Loo flushing was not great! So instead of saving water you had to use lots of flushes, which seemed to defeat the object. We decided to pass on the pull cord showers and wait until we moved on to the next site a few hours later. All of this would have been acceptable given the challenges of water in a rural location in a hot country, but there was a swimming pool which seemed incongruous given the water issues.

This was the most expensive site we had stayed on in Portugal out of season at 17. 40€ plus extra for Wi-Fi ( we used our own data), for the least access to water and waste facilities. We had been using our ACSI card on other sites ( this is no longer in the ACSI book/app). The area looks fascinating but we are unlikely to use this site again.

Here every year for last seven years, lovely site, lovely people, need we say more?

Not a lot for children to do if they need to be entertained by playground

Slot machines etc, but plenty to satisfy an enquiring child.

This was our fourth visit in four trips, so that should tell you something! A great little site with truly friendly owners whose driving ethos is that the pleasure of their clients is above all else, (including profit!).

We have never been in high season but whenever we have been there it is very tranquil and a brilliant start to our tours of Portugal.

Highly recommended.

A lovely campsite - in spite of the ants nests! It's small, clean and clearly much loved by the Dutch owners and in that respect, it is a Dutch run campsite. We met great people there and enjoyed a drink on the terrace with the owners and fellow campers.

If I had any not so positive comment and it's not intended to be a slight or anything like that, but after travelling 6 hours, it took me all my strength not to tell Joris that I really didn't want him to explain in finite detail all the sites to see in Campo Maior and the rules and regulations of the campsite, which were in any case set out in a wonderful booklet produced by the owners for campers. I was just too tired to take it all in.

But a big A for effort and worth visiting.

Worth a couple of nights off the beaten track.

We originally intended to stay at this site for two nights but decided to stay an extra day and wished that we could have stayed longer.

The site is very clean with good flat pitches. Facilities are somewhat basic but very clean, well maintained and in our opinion entirely acceptable. We used our Camping Club card (ACSI) which made this site very reasonably priced.

We were made very welcome and enjoyed drinking wine under the stars with the site owners. The site is surrounded by olive groves with lots of quiet lovely walks. The town itself is quite a trek and with the exception of a nice main square not that attractive.

We have recommended this site to friends and are very happy to recommend it to fellow members. We certainly intend to return as and when we can and will use this site to explore a wonderful part of Portugal.

What a find - if you are thinking of visiting this area would recommend this site.

The site is 800 metres from the town, and entrance in through a large double gate. The pitches are on tiers (not at all steep) leading up towards the reception, bar and pool.

Toilet block with piping hot showers, washing up areas, laundry etc. All immaculately clean. Chem disposal and fresh water pipes. Lower pitches have ehu. Good wifi - charged €2 for the password and we had 48 hours access.

The hosts are a lovely Dutch couple - nothing is too much trouble and they are very friendly and helpful.

The town of Camp Maior is worth at least a day. A 'white' town with cobbled streets. A lovely square in the centre with benches and fountains. Two supermarkets in town and a host of other shops, good variety not sure there would be anything you couldn't buy there.

Numerous cafes, bars and restaurants - some offering 'dish of the day' for as little as €5. 00 per head. The castle is at the top of the hill and there are several good museums and churches to visit.

The Capela dos Ossos is amazing - built from the bones and skulls of the dead of the town when it was hit by a lightening strike. The Olive Oil factory tour is only 50cents and included a tasting. There town is also home to Delta Coffee and their factory has a tour too but we didn't fit that in.

The camp owners have a great book they have put together of things to do in the area.

Cant recommend highly enough the town and campsite - we will be back for a longer visit.

This is a really nice small site owned and run by a dutch couple who are most welcoming.

We could quote several examples of the great hospitality offered but one sticks out in our minds. Our hosts arranged a 'bring your own food' barbeque and we enjoyed the company of dutch and german campers (on what was coincidentally our wedding anniversary), with the owners acting as translators!

The town of Campo Maior is an easy walk and is well worth several visits.

We will be back in 2013!
