Please note we have been advised that this site is now permanently closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

Friendly welcome, in English, at reception. We were asked to choose any pitch, we chose one near the lake.

All pitches are large, some very large. Our pitch had a tap and drainage so we could plumb the caravan in.

Bread available to order even though there were only 3 pitches occupied.

We saw Coypu and terrapins in the lake, also large carp.

Frogs noisy, yes, but didn’t really bother us.

We will stay here again.

Reviewers - mature couple with campervan and bikes

We chose this site from the ACSI book as we were meeting up with friends nearby, however if I had read the reviews on here beforehand, I might have looked elsewhere. As it was, it sounded ok in the guide description.

The site is on the main road between Carcassonne and Limoux, and is very convenient for visiting the area.

The receptionist was friendly and we conversed in French. I explained that we needed to use the washing machine, and she allocated us a pitch accordingly.

The site is mainly flat and grassy, in a lovely parkland setting, next to a lake. It has a one way perimeter road, with in and out barriers opposite each other. There are a lot of chalets, mainly in the central area near the pool and playground. Armed with the map of the site, we found our pitch, it was next to the lakeside, though separated from it by a fence. We saw no other units on our way, the pitches were all empty. The pitch we had been allocated wasn't particularly near to the sanitary block, we tended to use the bikes to get there. By the evening, 3 other units were in the lakeside pitches, plus we saw a MH pitched near the pool. Apart from those and 1 chalet seeming to be occupied, there were no others on the site that night.

The nearest sanitary block was small but adequate for the numbers using it, and was clean. The water was nice and hot, and the washing machine worked efficiently with a 4 euro token.

In the central area is the pool which we didn't use, and a cafe bar area which was closed. Bread can be ordered at reception for morning.

We cycled round the site, you can't go right round the lake, but the path takes you to a tree shaded river. The river was fast flowing at that point, we didn't investigate further as to whether it was suitable for bathing at all.

The only downside for us were the frogs on the lake! They were incredibly noisy for the whole night. If I stayed here again, I might be tempted to ask for a pitch slightly further away from the lake, nearer the sanitary block, but not too near the road which was rather noisy too.

Despite the previous negative reviews we found the site good, and would use it again if we were passing.

Visited this site as we wished to be located near to Carcassonne citadel. We were going to stay three nights but only stayed one. Staff as previously mentioned did little to welcome the non French speakers. There are few toilet facilities in May, and if you visit at the weekend the locals have a habit of cramming two/three people per shower cubical. No plugs for washing up sinks and water was only just warm. Airotel seems to mean, hotel but in mobile homes. While we were there three busses of teenagers arrived for a football tournament. They occupied the mobile homes unsupervised and partied until 3am. Running around the site screaming and shining torches on the vans etc.

I would not recommend this site as you never know who will be staying in the mobile homes.

When we tried to complain the next morning the staff were unhelpful and said they could not do anything.

The campsite is easy to reach from the A61, and close to Carcassonne.

The toilet blocks appear to be unisex, the toilets have no seats or toilet paper, but are generally clean as they are hosed down every morning. The pitches are of reasonable size, but the pitches with shade are more difficult to get in because of the trees!

There is a little road noise but generally quiet except for the Saturday disco that did not finish until after midnight.

The pool has a slide but is a little small for busy times. Activities are more for the French speaking, and information only given to the French. We found an activities sheet, but we were ignored at the welcome meeting.

There is a restaurant/bar in summer, but they only take cash. The reception staff speak little English, even though my husband speaks good French the staff were not very friendly unlike the other sites we stayed in. Please remember the reception closes for lunch from 12. 00 till 14. 00, we arrived at 12. 05 to check out, after having difficulty get off our pitch, to be told that reception was closed by the receptionist and to return at 14. 00.

A good stop over site.

To Find Site:- Leave A61 autoroute at junction 23 and head towards Limoux on D118. Not far before Preixan the road divides into a short length of dual carriageway section, The campsite is on the left a short distance after the dual carriageway section ends and is well signed. Reception is closed between midday and 3.00pm but there is quite a bit of room at the entrance to park.

Camping Grand Sud is a few miles south of Carcassonne. It has around 100 touring pitches and one side of the site is bordered by a lake where fishing is allowed. They vary in size but most are of a reasonable size. Some are on grass but many, particularly near the lake and under trees are on hard baked soil and in places uneven. There are about 40/50 mobile homes on site. Electric points, 6 amp supply, use mainly CEE17 connectors but watch out for reverse polarity. Water points are dotted around the site. The toilet/shower facilities are housed in several small blocks around the site and seem to be unisex. They are of an acceptable standard but could do with an upgrade. Toilets are seatless and no paper provided. During the high season the site has a restaurant/bar and bread can be ordered. Near the restaurant is a small swimming pool with a slide. There is also a WiFi facility at the bar. Unfortunately in the low season, when the ACSI Card is accepted, none of these facilities are available so all you are getting at this time of the season is a pitch with electrics and water and limited toilet facilities. There seems limited English spoken at reception. Our visit was during the third week of September and one would have to say the site generally lacked the impression of TLC being spent on it. Difficult to judge what it would be like at other times of year but would have thought it better as a stop over or short stay site. The campsite is quite close to the D118 so there will be some road noise at certain times of day.

La Cite, the Medieval City just outside Carcassonne is within easy reach of the campsite and is well signed. This is a big wine producing region so there are lots of opportunities to buy wine direct. For shopping and fuel you have a choice of Carcassonne or Limoux in the other direction
