 Camping Balze is fantastic.

My initial thoughts were ooh there are no marked pitches but this doesn't matter because there is so much space.

The facilities:

Reception - really helpful and greeted with a smile every day.

Bar - great, amazing prices. Prosecco was cheaper than beer at 2 Euros a glass.

Location - WOW. Unbelievable, beautiful, stunning. Sunrise awesome, sunset even more so.

Supermarket - There's a CONAD 10 mins walk away.

Restaurants - many in the town of Volterra but do not overlook Balze Trattoria. Gr8 pizza, full of locals, and they do take-away.

Volterra - Gorgeous. Despite it's popularity it has retained a charm that San Gimignano and the other towns have lost in favour of commercial 'tat'.

Location - A great base to visit Siena, Florence and all the other towns on the must go to list in TOSCANA.

DEFINITELY HIGH ON THE LIST OF MUST GO BACK TO - CIAOU

This is more of an update than a review.

I have been in touch with the site and they will allow cars to park next to tents OFF PEAK season.

For us having the car nearby reduces the security concerns of having the car in a separate area, also a tent cannot be secured like a car that is locked and alarmed.

A lovely, terraced campsite on the outskirts of Volterra, which is a beautiful Tuscan town on a 650m outcrop which gives magnificent views over Tuscany. We stayed 16 nights in August with our 3 sons.

The campsite is quiet without any entertainment. There is a cafe that serves coffee and wine and a small shop. The site has a clean and small swimming pool that is open from 10 - 7 and swimming hats must be worn. The staff (their hours were about 7am-10pm) were friendly and helpful and they spoke good English. They were kind enough to tolerate our faltering Italian. The site has a barrier controlled by the staff in the office and a sliding metal gate that is closed at night. We felt secure.

There are no washing machines, but there are large sinks. Showers are hot and clean with no limits on the water you use. It was lovely not having to keep pressing the button every thirty seconds! There are lots of toilets (UK type and Turkish style) but you do need your own toilet paper. The toilets are regularly cleaned, but the drains can smell a little at times. There is a chemical toilet disposal cubicle and a good quality motor home service point that looks very new.

Car parking is off-site on an adjacent, gravel car park above the campsite that is reserved for campers although you are allowed to bring your car into the site to load up for day trips if you ask.

There are reasonably priced restaurants and a good 'Conad' supermarket within 10mins walking distance.

Access to the site is easy, but as the site is 650m up a hill, there is quite a steep climb and a few switchbacks to negotiate. It is on Google street view so you can follow the road along. We managed to get our our large unit up there (8. 2 x 2. 5m) without problems so most should be OK.

You can't book in advance, so you have to just turn up. We emailed the site in February and were told they always had space, but were only able to squeeze onto a small pitch for the first night. If this had been the only pitch the following day, we would have moved on, but fortunately for us, someone left the next morning and we were able to get a good pitch at about 10am. Pitches aren't marked out but there are enough electrical points with standard camping plugs. We did have to reverse the polarity.

It is a lovely site and Volterra itself is well worth a visit. Lovely shops, restaurants, views and historical monuments/museums. It makes a good central base for exploring Tuscany and the landscape surrounding you is beautiful. As we left and paid the fees, we were given a card that offers you a 10% discount if it is presented if we return. Four adults (14+) and one child cost 890€, not too bad as Italy seems more expensive than France.

 Small, clean, quiet.

A jewel of a camp ground. In the morning the church bells ring. The staff is very friendly and kind. No entertainment for children. Close to town but very quiet at night. The pool is free but is only open 10 hours a day. The toilets are kept very clean. The bar is small but every morning they have fresh bread. Only five hundred meters outside there is a large supermarket. We recommend it to everyone.
