If you are looking for a picturesque village setting with an idyllic caravan site, look no further than The Rose Inn at Shotley, just 9 miles outside Ipswich in Suffolk.
This serene area of outstanding natural beauty offers the perfect surroundings to relax & enjoy a break from the daily routine. The quiet site behind the Public House is the ideal location for you to unwind. Whether you love to discover the great outdoors, explore beautiful riverside walks, sample some delicious local produce or have a Suffolk adventure with your family this wonderful area offers so many possibilities for a good time.
Shotley Heritage Park, a community recreational area of 8 acres of woodland & 50 acres of foreshore adjacent to the river Stour offers outstanding views of Parkeston Quay & Harwich & is managed to help protect flora & fauna whilst Golden Wood & Wildflower Meadow is a community woodland.
From Shotley Point you can take the Foot Ferry across to Harwich where Harwich Haven is the best natural harbour on the east coast of England. On the north bank of the River Orwell is the Port of Felixstowe, the UKs largest Port, handling 40% of all containerised trade & the seaside Town of Felixstowe also accessible by the foot ferry.
HMS Ganges Museum, located at Shotley Marina, tells the story of HMS Ganges with many exhibits, photographs & artefacts on display. The Royal Naval Training Establishment opened in 1905 where over 150,000 Naval Cadets were trained before it closed in 1976. The original Site is currently under development for housing although the Mast still remains.
Shotley Church & Naval Cemetery are well worth a visit. St. Marys Church dates from the 1400s & the Naval Cemetery contains the graves of sailors from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy & the Dutch & German Navies who died during WW11. These are tended by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In the adjacent Cemetery can be seen the graves of services personnel from the First World War.
A short distance down the river you will find Pin Mill - a favourite beauty spot for artists & walkers, Jimmys Farm & Wildlife Park or Alton Water Reservoir where you can hire a bicycle or sail a dingy or perhaps Suffolk Food Hall at Wherstead to sample some local delicacies & maybe take some home.
If you want to venture further there are numerous other places to visit. Southwold, Aldeburgh, Flatford, The Dedham Vale, Constable Country, Lavenham or Woodbridge to name but a few.
If a cycle ride is more your style explore the beauty of the Shotley Peninsula by cycling from Alton Water Park all the way to Pin Mill - a quaint riverside hamlet on the south bank of the River Orwell. Start your journey from the Alton Water Park car park, and venture towards Holbrook where you turn right towards Holbrook Creek, Harkstead and Chelmondiston before arriving at Pin Mill.
Once there, be sure to take in the stunning panoramic views over the River Orwell. Dotted along the water are a number of boats, including many which have been abandoned and ravaged by the forces of nature over time.
To make your way back, leave Pin Mill and meander through the village of Holbrook, eventually arriving back at Alton Water. This 22km route should take roughly three hours - not including any time spent in taking light refreshment.
Or just enjoy the excellent facilities at The Shotley Rose.
Sarah, the landlady will make you very welcome . A good pint of local beer is always available & dogs & children are well cared for.
Food is served Tuesday to Sunday with many homemade dishes such as lasagne, curries, pies & puddings as well as traditional fish & chips, burgers, scampi & steaks. Sunday Roast Lunch is also available whilst vegetarians & vegans are well catered for.
A game of darts or pool (over 14s only) or maybe bingo or live entertainment some weekends could round off your stay before a restful sleep gets you ready for more adventures tomorrow Sorry NO OPEN FIRES ALLOWED
