The area is steeped in history, from before Roman occupation till the Second World War. Much can be gleaned from the Roman History Museum in Maryport. The Maritime Museum in Maryport has links with `Mutiny on the Bounty` (Fletcher Christian was born in Cockermouth) and the Famous Titanic which has many connections with the town (The White Star Line having been established in the town) For younger children the Solway Aquarium is a must or for older children the indoor go cart stadium.
Wildlife around the Solway Estuary is in abundance. Winter especially with thousands of migrating birds arriving from different parts of the world. Information about the Coast and many marshes in the area can be had from the Discovery Centre in Silloth.
Silloth only 4Km away has a famous Links Gold Course ranked in the top 10 in the Country and well worth a round, There are also tennis and bowling clubs for energetic visitors
The Lake District and Scottish Borders are easily accessible Keswick being only 25 Km away. In the other direction the Historic town of Carlisle is a must and going further afield you can spend a day on Hadrian`s wall with much to see
