The Peak District National Park is quite simply a fab place to spend a few days roaming around on foot, on bikes, on horseback… If you cant pick a place to start your explores, perhaps aim for the stepping stones across the valley at Dovedale (15 minutes drive), or set out on the Tissington Trail, which heads out of Ashbourne to wend its way along 13 miles of abandoned railway line.
Much excellent wandering can also be done in the grounds of the areas smart stately homes. Chatsworth (40 minutes) is a fab place to fill a whole day out: as well as the art-filled house and gorgeous gardens, theres also a farmyard, a kids trail and a huge playground area. The National Trusts Sudbury Hall (15 minutes) and Kedleston Hall (20 minutes) are mighty fine options too.
If you love a good scream as you plummet earthwards on a rollercoaster, a day out at Alton Towers (20 minutes) is a must on the schedule. For somewhat gentler family days out, try an animal encounter at Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) or a steam-driven ride on the Churnet Valley Railway (20 minutes).
