Returned to Merry Lands this weekend and had a wonderful, chilled weekend there. I can not sing the praises of this site enough and hope more people take the time to leave reviews. This site needs planning permission to continue to be a the great campsite it is and needs all the support it can get to fend off the doubters in the area.
Returning after a month away and possibly the wettest June in history, the site is well cared for and most obviously loved by its owners.
The water free toilets are regularly re-stocked and have the minimum of smell. Maggie obviously read my last review and made a new recycling bag for plastic food waste which wasn't available last time I went. This is the sign of a good campsite who take on board constructive criticism and do something about it!
We still admire the ethics of the site-by not packing campers in you never feel too close to anyone, giving you the sense that you could be camping alone. At night you may see the distant glow of your neighbours fire and the odd hoot of laughter but your party feels isolated which I love.
There is a lovely walk to The Gun pub taking you through a corn field (may be wheat!) and the kids love to visit the local horses.
The main selling point of Merrylands is there are no time restrictions on when you turn up on your arrival and when you leave on your departure. This is my bug bear with soapy campsites as when the weather is lovely as it was on our last day on Sunday, you want to pack up at your leisure. One of our party stayed until 7 o'clock on their leaving day of Saturday which was no problem!
The swimming pool in Hailsham provides a welcome place to go if it rains and Pevensey bay is only 20 minutes away and Eastbourne 30 minutes. Pevensey has a stony beach and you may have to wade through a few metres of ankle deep mud to get to the sand but the water is shallow for a long way out making it ideal for young children. Also great for beach combing.
This campsite is a wee East Sussex gem and one I look forward to returning to time and time again! They fit in well with the local area and have not commercialised the space they use in any way.
Take time to review this site-they need our support!

Just had a splendid weekend at this delightful site. The owners are extremely helpful - not at all concerned about our rather delayed arrival (thanks to the friday night M25) and ensured we had logs, paper and kidling on arrival.
The site is great for children with plenty of room for them to run around and play. It is also ideally positioned for visiting the south coast.
We went cycling on Saturday afternoon - hiring bikes from nearby Cuckmere Cycle Hire who were also very helpful. This enabled us to cycle to the sea and around the nearby forest.
All in all a wonderful weekend and I am sure we will return to Merrylands.

Just the kind of campsite I love - open fires allowed, pitch where you want, plenty of open space, clean and eco-friendly facilities, no minimum stays (even on a bank holiday weekend).
Oh, and very reasonable too - £10 per adult per night and kids go free. There should be more like this!
Only thing I can possibly think of that could add to the experience would be a small kids playground with rope swings, dens etc. But that would just be the icing on the cake.

Fantastic, unspoilt quiet site with very friendly, helpful owners free of all hype or intrusiveness.
All the facilities work well, including the hot showers from a wood-burning stove and especially the composting loos, which are completely smell-free and noise-free, too. Abundant toilet paper and night lanterns.
The log deliveries are generous and the peace and quiet stunning.
This site is also truly dog friendly, with no daft rules.
A helpful laminated map makes it easy to explore the lovely walks along the Weald way, including to two nicely different local pubs, both offering food. The walk to The Gun is the shortest and prettiest and the pub has a lovely garden. The food there is upmarket with the usual small portions, but high quality. Dogs are allowed inside.
The 6 Bells in Chiddingly is noisier and also has an outside sitting area which is not really a garden, though. Bigger portions and more down-to-earth, hearty fare, but busier and noisier with occasional loud music. A great pub. Good beer in both.
Highly recommended campsite, with plenty of pitch space and flexible arrangements.

Having returned from the wonderful Merrylands this weekend I would like to sing it's praises!
Maggie who runs this spacious site is the most welcoming and hospitable campsite owner I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Easy going and helpful and patient too!
I had the task of arranging a large camping group(25 adults, nearly 30 kids!) and from the moment of enquiring about the facilities, Maggie answered my questions in a timely and helpful manner. When we arrived she was there to welcome us and throughout the weekend she would come and visit us each evening to collect that night's fees and bring wood to us. She had the patience of a Saint!
The main selling points of Merrylands were;
A-The cost. Ten pounds per night per adult-not pitch or tent size! Our party brought two yurts- no extra cost!
B-No minimum or maximum nights required. We went on a busy Jubilee Bank holiday and some stayed for two, some stayed for three, extra's came at the last moment etc etc, you could have stayed for one! No problem!
C-The site is so well spaced that you didn't intrude on anyone else's space. They have a policy not to over book. The kids have masses of space to play football and cricket or to ride their bikes.
D-The countryside is gorgeous. The stream which runds beside the site is fenced off so no wading for the kids which was a little disappointing. However, from a safety aspect great if you have little children.
The showers are semi open air but were hot and did what they said on the tin with a sprinkling of cool rain, which made quite a refreshing experience!
The no water toilets were cleaned regularly, had masses of toilet rools, didn't smell and had gaps in the roof to allow the fresh in! Sawdust was readily available and taps with cold water and soap were right next to the toilets.
Firepits allowed, music at a reasonable and unobtrusive level fine, we even had a firedancer with our group who performed for the kids.
Only, (very small), downside is that they only recycle glass bottles, plastic bottles, tins and cans. Therefore, you have a lot of rubbish to get rid of which you would normally be able to recycle elsewhere- ie cardboard and plastics.
However, they will give you a plastic bucket to throw food compostables in (non meat)
We can't wait to return, which we will this year, and found the weekend really wonderful!

We have just come back from Merrylands over the jubilee weekend with a small group of us. We really enjoyed it.
The campsite was clean, remote, owners were very friendly and helpful.
The site is beautiful and the birdsong in the morning was like nothing I had heard before - so lovely.
Facilities - composting toilets which I have never used before and were so much nicer than anything I have used at other campsites, they do not smell even when weather is warm.
Showers were outside and great to smell the wood burning whilst heating up your water.
Lots to do locally either for grown ups or with children
Tons of walks from the campsite and we walked to one of two local pubs for our evening meal one night which was a gorgeous walk
Would recommend and would go again

Had a lovely weekend.
Booking was very simple, Maggie emailed and phone we back to confirm details.
Very friendly welcome to the site, driving around dropping off buckets of wood to campers. Very nice touch.
Showers and toilets are a little basic, but all you need for a weekend away.
Beautiful walks in all directions. Maps available from The Gun pub(ten mins away). Menu here looks amazing, stunning old pub with lovely garden.
Definitely be revisiting Merrylands, sorry, cant think of anything to be negative about.

I went with 15 friends to Merryland camp site for my 24th Birthday.
Shaun brought us fire wood and a map of the surrounding area and was extremely friendly and helpful. Despite the occasional torrential rain everyone had a fantastic time. The toilets were perfect- clean and comfortable and it happened to be empty so we didn't have to worry about disturbing anyone.
It was easy to find with the directions given, close to stations etc. We didn't venture off the site but were told there are pubs nearby.
It was back to basics, which was perfect for us! We even got a game of rounders in. I cannot recommend it enough for parties and families alike! I will definitely be back next year for Tesstival 2012!

We stayed here over the bank hol w/e with two other families, so 6 adults and 8 kids. Its basically 3 large fields with the HQ in the middle field, where there are 2 ECO toilets (they are actually pretty good, and to be honest been in a lot worse public toilets around the world) and currently one shower but the plans are to add another 2. Hot water all the time when I used them but you just shout and another log is thrown on and you get hot water.
Plenty of space for the kids to explore and play and and the advantage of having your own fires is excellent, they even drive round between 5-6 to sell you logs.
You just drive up and choose your location, no tents on tents even over this busy w/e. We didn't do many walks but there was plenty of information in the info tent.
Looking forward to going back and the extra showers would help but the staff were very friendly.

We have just returned from a lovely couple of days at this site. I don't know the previous two reviewers, but they both summed up our experience exactly!
I agree with it all - lovely site, friendly & very helpful hosts, clean, efficient and ingenious toilets and hot shower! A great place to take the family.
Proper camping, absolutely no frills, just lots of space, peace and quite (until we arrived with our kids!), log fires, trees, grass and sky! Fantastic! We would definitely go back and recommend. Thanks
