 July 2002
This was our first family camping trip. We booked it on the strength of its 'Award Winning Toilets'. We have since stayed in other campsites and Ord House has spoiled us for others!!! It's amazing how much difference it can make to your holiday. The family bathroom (bath, sink and double shower) are a real bonus for those of us with small children) but it was all lovely and clean.
When we stayed the weather was glorious and there was lots of things for the children to play with - park, crazy golf etc.
The staff were lovely and the shop is good, mainly camping stuff but some sweets and ice-cream too!
The pub was nice and the family room has a 'bar' at a low level for the children to get sweets and soft drinks from.
I would (and have) recommended this site to lots of people.

We made the decision to go to East Ord based on testimonials on this web site and a visit in person to see the site (we also booked the pitch when we visited).
For us it was the first time our family of 6 had been camping together. We took a Coleman Quadspace 9 man tent and pitched on a (slightly sloping) grass pitch adjacent to some hard standing tourer pitches. A hookup was provided, but we didn't have the equipment to utilise it. The pitch was on the perimeter of the games field and only a short walk to the toilet block. Here's my scoring for the facilities -
*Toilets
A key is issued at reception (32 returnable) Clean, bright, everything worked (driers, soap dispensers, door locks, loo rolls stocked) they even had the radio piped through!

*Shop
Although this was predominantly camping accessories (Very good prices they had an excellent offer on for torches, less than half price!) It did stock kids games, sweets and ices. They even let you freeze your coolbox blocks free of charge)

*Games
Crazy golf - (£1.50 with £1 being refunded on return of putter and ball)

Swing Park - Safe surface, all frames in good working order. Visible for a good part of the lower site and close to shop/reception.

9 Hole golf - (£2.50 with £1 refund on return of wedge and putter)A short walk to the top of the park brings you to the course which is nicely laid out and picturesque.

Bicycle hire -
I never used this facility, because I couldn't get bikes for all the kids at once (I wanted to avoid a fight!) but I would recommend taking the bikes if you can as the park is spacious enough for the kids to ride around.

*Hospitality
The Ord House pub is next to the Reception/Shop and the food is excellent and reasonably priced. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. There's a lounge (no kids), Family area (kids allowed) and play area (adults enter at your peril!). It is possible to relax and not have to worry about the kids. There's also a serving hatch at the end of the bar to allow kids to buy their own drinks.
We didn't feel we had to venture any further than the site for a drink, but there is another pub just outside the site. On Friday there was a karaoke and pub quiz (we actually won it with the help of our pitch neighbours the night before we left!). Also they stocked Rioja!

*Washing
The laundry is excellent and clean (£2 per wash load and £1 per dry) with ironing facilities.
The toilet block had 4 washing up sinks with instant hot water (essential for us tenty types).

*Other
There must be a lot work put in to keeping this site as we constantly saw grass cutters, cleaners, litter pickers and a lad brushing up the roadways.
There's an excellent perimeter walk (signposted as a dog walk) if you like a little bit of exercise.
I was impressed with how this site was landscaped. The variety of trees and shrubs was amazing and lent a "country park" feel to the site (although it is posted as east ord country park)

*Criticisms
Just the usual.......dogs! I'm not a dog lover, but I like to see people with dogs making sure they don't annoy those without. The park did have adequate signage to emphasise that fouling must be cleaned and provided plenty of bins....that said, we managed to fall foul of 2 "underfoot incidents" so someone obviously didn't care for the regulations. I have never understood why people would want to bring a dog to a campsite and tether it for most of the day only to have it bark at other dogs and be shouted at constantly as a result! To be fair there were a lot of responsible owners.......it's always one bad apple though...

All in all, I would highly recommend East Ord and will definently be returning.

It's probably a good idea to mention places of interest in the area.

- Garden Centre (5 minute walk)
Large well stocked with tea-room

- Chain Bridge Honey Farm (10 mins by car)
Everything you ever wanted to know about bees. Has a hive under glass observation. Entry is free.

- Maize Maze
A maze made from maize! (10 mins by car)
£12 family. Great fun....and frustrating. You can take flags with you to locate the kids!

- Berwick (5 mins by car)
What a beatiful town and well kept. Take a walk round the walls but don't look over the edge! There's also the barracks (English Heritage fee payable) and lots of room to let the kids run around.

- Pot a doodle do (5 mins by car)
Kids (or you) can select a bowl or cup and paint it to their design, it is then glazed and re-fired ready for collection next day or two. A bit expensive but not something they get to do often. Horse riding (get a receipt for the day you book on, we turned up on the wrong day due to an error on the part of the girl who booked it........I've never seen my wife so angry!!!) Tea-room......nice place, but pricey.

- Bamburough Castle (25 -30 mins by car)No family ticket!?
This was the highlight of the week. What a beatiful castle and massive. You could easily spend 6 hours here. There's an archaelogical dig in progress. The museum is good too. Worth the money I must admit. Beaches are great too.

- Holy Island (40-45 mins by car)
Free entry on island, but parking is £3 regardless of stay duration
Hmmm... LOTS of people on the day we went, wich was a Friday and the castle was SHUT! Priory costs to enter....we didn't go in . Plenty of gift shops with religious and strangely pagan orientation! Nice peaceful beaches though. You need to time this visit as the tide governs passage over the tarmac causeway.

This campsite deserves its five stars! Everything is good about it, the kids had plenty to do and the park is very clean & tidy. The showers and toilets are out of this world, they have radio 2 playing in the morning!

We even used the Laundry and that was good too, £2 for a wash and £1 for a dry (supply for own powder), very clean and bright.

5 star camping at it's best!

Not the cheapest but I would recommend it!
