Facilities adequate. Grass very slippery on arrival( it had been raining heavily)
Overall a great stay. Would recommend to anyone looking for a site in the area.

The first thing to be said about this site, if you are travelling on your own with no need of electricity (as I was), is that it is the most amazing value. If however you were a largish family and needed a hook-up I would be less sure. It is exceptionally convenient for the A1, both north and south bound. You are met at the gate by the warden in his adjacent caravan. He is very helpful.
The site is of medium to small size, in two fields. It is on the side of a hill, and there are only a few level pitches. The site opens off a residential street, which forms one boundary. This road is subject to a wholly unenforced 30mph limit - it appears to be some sort of commuting rat-run from the A1, and remained noisy for much of the evening. I imagine the noise from the A1 is dependent on temperature inversions, wind and weather, but the night I was there it was intolerable, and although I am a fairly heavy sleeper, woke me at 03h00.
The facilities are very simple - a modern, well-constructed shed houses the ladies and the gents - the gents also serves the disabled. It is good that those less fortunate get appropriate facilities, but they are not always so suitable for the able-bodied majority. There is one low, very small basin, nowhere to put your washbag or hang a jacket or towel, and no looking glass for shaving etc. It was clean. There are no showers, so you really wouldn't want to stay more than one night if you were dependent on the campsite. There is also an additional Portaloo, and an Elsan emptying station.
Great Casterton (easy walking) was a coach staging post on the (old) Great North Road, so it is disappointing that nothing very much of this history appears to survive. It seems to be just a dormitory village. The church is simple but handsome, and the carved gravestones striking. The Crown Inn is ancient and ought to be an attractive focal point, but inside, despite a friendly welcome, it has all the charm of a scout hut.

Sent owner message and she rang me back. Gave me code for entry and quoted £4 pppn + £4 hookup. Went to take a look first as read reviews and worried. Lovely little site, guy in caravan at entrance very welcoming and told us best place to pitch. Toilets (ladies with 2 cubicles and sink, mens/disabled 1 standard loo plus sink) had hot water, loo paper, lighting and were very clean, but no towels or dryers to dry your hands. We know the area very well as girlfriend used to live half a mile away. Went to party nearby and walked back. Lovely and quiet and the faintest of road noise from the A1 and side roads. The Crown down the road is a good pub, nice garden and reasonable food. Londis garage to other way sells papers, milk etc. Inbetween is a very nice garden centre. We'll definitely be staying there next time were at a do nearby even though we can pitch on someones drive as we have nice quiet site, clean loos and are not beholding to anyone and all for £8 a night (we didn't need hookup).

This site is very convenient both for the A1 and visiting Stamford (which is well worth a visit). We had booked for two nights but found the access system rather unusual. When we arrived the security gate was across - not normally a problem but it had a notice on it with a telephone number to ring. We did this and were told that the warden was in a caravan near the barrier. Can't understand why a notice couldn't just have been left. The warden was very pleasant and we were asked to choose a pitch. The ground in the top field is very sloping but there is a flatter area in the first field. The toilets were basic but clean. There are no showers. I couldn't find the chemical toilet disposal area. The village and pub are pleasant enough. Can't remember exactly how much we paid but I think it was about £13 pn for 2 adults and EHU. We would probably only go back if we desperately needed a stopover.

I don't mind a 'basic' site but hey, no toilet paper, nothing to dry your hands on, no general lighting.
The pitches we were allocated were also on quite a steep slope.
This site is very, VERY basic and at £24. 00/ night (£4. 00 pp/pn), simply not worth the money.
Obviously, my family won't be returning there any time soon.

Spent 5 nights at this site.
We arrived late afternoon and no-one was there to show us to a pitch and no-one answered the telephone so we just took a pitch and hoped that no-one was booked on there. The pitches are not marked out as such so you have to be careful that you don't encroach too much. They are not level (the ones that were vacant weren't)and even with our levelling blocks this proved to be leaving the van on a angle - which we put up with.
The toilet block looked pleasant although very cold and was only cleaned once whilst we were there or if they were cleaned the bins most certainly were not emptied. The fresh water tap was at the back of this and was not the easiest to get to - some better planning required there me thinks, the elsan and waste water wash were next to the fresh water and no identifying signs showing which was which - this would be of benefit to new visitors to the site.
The site has lots of caravans on - mostly being seasonal but I think there are a few that reside there.
As I have lived just outside Stamford this site was just a base as we were visiting friends and out most of the time. The site was quiet - the warden of the site was nice - sold fresh eggs and local meat from the farm where worked, he gave us a few duck eggs f. O. C as he loads.
I would not like to use this site at a busy time of year as the toilet block is inadequate in my eyes and there are no showers.
Price was very reasonable but I have stayed at better sites offering the same price.
If you like bare basics then this site will be ok.

A fabulous welcome by the warden got our stay off to a brilliant start. Offered us a flat(ish) pitch and told us what was on offer locally even providing us with take away menus who deliver to the site. We thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend Sid's fish & chips! Garden Centre just around the corner and a Londis at a petrol station a bit further up the hill. Clean toilet block in use, just remember to take your own toilet roll. Approx two mile walk into Stamford but the bus stop is just along the lane if you don't fancy the walk. Great value for money too!
We were sorry we didn't get to say thank you to the warden on our departure but we will certainly be returning and visiting your other site too. Thank you.

Great site. Very convenient for visiting Stamford or Rutland Water. There is a bus stop at the end of the road to both places. The site manager was very welcoming and friendly. As it was very hot he offered us a space in a shady area of the field. The new toilet block was up and running. These were clean and done to a good standard. No showers but not a problem for a short stay. It was cheap at £25 for a two nights stay. This price included some extra food provided by the manager. The site does not cater for children, what a bonus! We will definitely be returning.

We spent 3 nights on this campsite over the bank holiday weekend. It is perfectly adequate for a short stay, they are building a new toilet block with a disabled facility which will be an improvement on the old ones. Still no showers but at £12. 00 per night with hook-ups we had no complaints. There is an excellent pub, good food and beer within a quarter of a mile and a bus stop with a service between Oakham and Stamford within 100 yards. Rutland Water 10 to 15 minutes drive away and their Saturday night barbecue is an experience not to be missed! We will certainly be back.

This site had two things going for it, it is cheap, and close to Stamford and Rutland Water. The toilets were dirty, and didn't appear to have been cleaned for a while. No toilet paper, soap or towels/ hand dryer, one of the WCs had a missing seat. The toilet block was draughty and cold, not recommended for a strip down wash.
This site is no longer listed in the CCC brochure

Management response: The toilets were actually closed with notices placed on them that they were being demolished. We informed all visitors if they had actually booked with us that we would have no toilet facilities in Nov & Dec. |
