We stayed at this site last w/e as a couple of our friends were running the Great North Run. Being honest it wasn’t our first choice of the sites we looked at when searching for a site back in February. But every site we tried to get into was fully booked, and so it was by chance we found this site.
Set on a working dairy farm, the site is nicely laid out, very clean and tidy. And the lady (Janet) we dealt with was very pleasant, on arrival we were met by her daughter. She gave us all the info we needed pitch wise.
The site is as I've already stated part of a working farm, there is a cycle track that runs past the site between the pitches and the farm yard where the toilet/shower block is situated, the walk from the site to the facilities is through a gate, down some steps(6-8 in all) cut in the embankment, across the cycle track, through a second gate, and 20-30 metres walk to the block, (100 -150 metres from our pitch to the facilities block) having said that we’ve walked further distances to the facilities blocks on many other sites we’ve used in the past.
The toilet/shower block whilst not in, is built on the edge of the farmyard and is part of other buildings in the farmyard, it consist of a large room access to which is pathed and through a security key pad locked door. Inside the building is five rooms with sinks for dish or clothes washing, information board, attractions information, and hairdryer in the largest room.
There are four rooms off the main room, two shower/toilet/ hand basin rooms, and two toilets. One of each for ladies and gents. Whilst they could be called dated in appearance by some, I would call them functional and well maintained. With two advantages; no push button showers, and plenty of hot water. They were also very clean everytime we used them, no matter what time of the day. And the building has heating as well.
The cycle track being the old Consett to Newcastle railway line is great for cyclist and dog walkers, whilst on site we found it very quiet and peaceful, being in the area for the Great North Run we visited Newcastle using the metro to get there, and found a gem of a pub The City Tavern (NE1 8JF ) it is dog friendly in the true sense of the words, (unlike a so called dog friendly cafe found by STMBO on a dog friendly places to eat in Newcastle site, while the rest of us went on a Newcastle United stadium tour. That claimed to be dog friendly but only let the owners dogs in).
Our dog Dougal was allowed in the pub, and was followed to where we sat by a waitress with a bowl of fresh water shortly after we arrived. The food was excellent, so good Infact that we ate there two nights running, a cracking find. We also went to South Shields to meet our friends at the finish, and have decided to return to the area for a better look next year, it looked very nice.
We will be heading for this site without hesitation, (four adults, one dog, 3/4 awning and four berth caravan for three nights for £78, very reasonable). Thank you Janet we all enjoyed our stay and will be back next year, and as soon as we find out if the runners are in next years GNR we’ll be giving you a ring for that w/e as well.

Let me start by saying I normal stay at Caravan Club sites because I am, how can we put it, fussy about the washing facilities.
So it was with some nervousness we went to this site, especially given the reviews about the toilet block but I couldn't have been more wrong if I tried.
Yes the toilet block is across a cycle path and yes they do have the appearance of a converted cow shed (the site is on a working diary farm)but they are clean and tidy and the water was lovely and hot not to mention plentiful. Not only that but a hair dryer is also provided
The welcome we got after a long journey was so friendly and this continued throughout our stay - and this welcome was extended by owners of caravans permanently sited there (our towels were taken in by the couple next door when we were out and it started to rain)
As has already been said there is a cycle path running along side the site and this is an ideal path to walk the dog
It is a quiet site, and does seem miles from anywhere so a little forward planning is needed but I would have no hesitation in going back as it is extremely good value for money.

Whist the toilet block had hot water, the jets was too powerful, the shower curtain stuck to me and the actual shower was filthy. The plug was blocked with hairs and the bins full of rubbish. The toilet block is out of the ark. The tourism information was out of date.
The access road had potholes and whilst the grass was well cut the site has lots of seasonal vans with no one at them. There are no facilities for families.

Just spent 3nights at this lovely site, very well maintained and clean, yes I agree with other comments about toilet block, but it was always very clean and tidy, what more do people want for £15 a night with electric? We will definitely go back again.
The Owner was very friendly and helpful and would stop for a chat. Other campers also friendly. We saw three red kites whilst staying, a wonderful sight.
Beamish is only a short ride away also Durham.

We stayed on this site for the May bank holiday weekend and found it to be clean and tidy and with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The toilet block seems have been the main topic for other reviews but we had no problems with them we found them clean and with plenty of hot water.
We had meals in the Royal Oak and Miners Arms in the nearby village of Medomsley and the food and service in both were excellent.
There is so much to do in and around the area that we will be going back and hopefully there will be a pitch for us to use at Byreside when we return.

Stayed at this site for 4 nights over the great run weekend. We found the site really easily and it is in a great location for Newcastle and Durham and is set in a lovely area. The site owner was very friendly and welcoming and site is very pretty and well maintained.
Those on the site were very friendly and some we spoke to were regular visitors, it was virtually full but still so quiet and peacefully as there are not loads of pitches.
There is a relatively flat country path running alongside the site with a nice pub, the Derwent Inn at one end. You have to cross this path to access the toilets which was not a problem during the day but at night you do need a torch.
The toilets are basic and set in an old farm buidling and on our arrival they clean and tidy. There are two separate toilets and two shower rooms both with a toilet in them, one of these was better than the other due to the height of the shower. The shower was nice and hot and not a push button.
The downside to the toilet block was not the buidling itself but the regularity of the cleaning, there was debris blown in the area, paper towel bins and a bin at the washing up area which didn't look as if they were emptied or cleaned whilst we were there and neither did the toilet cubicles which was a shame as the site is so beautifully maintained.
We can recommend the Oak pub in Medomsley as the food is great.

Staff very helpful. Site very clean and tidy. Lovely views and nice quiet area.
Unfortunately the toilets let this site down. You have to cross a disused railway which is now a public footpath then into a shed type building, housing 2 toilets and 2 showers.
They are functionable but in need of updating although spacious. Access is via a code which requires 2 hands to open the door, so if you are carrying anything then this could be difficult.
Would only recommend for an overnight stay.

This was our second visit to this well-kept site, which is set in lovely countryside close to both Newcastle and Durham.
As said in previous reviews, access is by a track shared with farm next door, but this caused us no problems.
Toilets and showers, which are in converted farm buildings, are clean but would benefit from some updating.
However this site is good value at £14 per night with electric hook-up and we would definitely go back.

Stopped here for a week after reading the reviews and found it lived up to all the positives expressed. It is a drive to shop, eat or drink so a little forward planning helps.
We found two nice pubs locally in Medomsley. The Miners arms and The Royal Oak ate in both and enjoyed the different catering styles, both with reasonable prices for instance, mixed grill was £10. 95 and Lynn had 3 lamb cutlets for £8. 95 at the Oak.
What this site offers most in my opinion is its proximity to a variety of enjoyable days out.
We went specifically to go to Cragside and Beamish, and boy was it worth it. If you like heritage Beamish has to be the best value for money anywhere in the UK.
The north east has lots going for it but for me what really makes it is its people and its welcoming dialect. We will be back.

Really lovely site, a hidden gem in middle of the countryside. Amazing walk just seconds from the site, toilet block is really clean but to be fair does need updating.
Janet was really helpful with reversing our caravan onto the pitch. Don't be put off by other negative reviews it really is a very peaceful countryside site.
No playground that we saw, BUT, as I said earlier there is a lovely walk with amazing views into the valley, also little pathways into the trees and down into the valley, no cars lots of room to run in freedom.
The only downside is the very narrow track leading to the site, quite daunting if you haven't the skill of reversing a caravan.
