There was no one there when we arrived to tell us where our pitch was,
Toilets were not cleaned for 2 days and no hand towels available.
No one checked on us till the last day to ensure we paid.
Site itself was satisfactory, disappointed the pub was only open for approximately 4-5hrs a day.

Stayed as part of a group of Riley car owners. Our camping requirements are not massive - the priority is a good pub at acceptable prices in a good location, and the Wheatsheaf scored 10/10 on all those. The landlord and staff could not have been more helpful, the meals were varied, delicious - but huge! I don't remember ever being able to finish a main course. Great choice of beer, both Jennings and guests. A short distance from the beauty of Buttermere yet handy for the interesting town of Cockermouth for supplies.
I imagine that real campers may find the facilities a tad basic, and busy periods could see them congested, but I would return here without question. The landlord has even thoughtfully provided a 200-yard walk from the campsite to the pub so that all those calories from the meal disappear!

We have just returned from the Wheatsheaf at Low Lorton. We stayed 29 July to 5 August 2017. As well as a field for tourers/tents, there are around 20 statics, most privately owned. Most were unoccupied while we were the few people who were there were extremely friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.
The site is situated behind the pub, which serves the most wonderful food and makes dogs as welcome as people, even to the extent of selling dog beer -non alcoholic of course!
We stayed in our tent with electric hookup. The EHU pitches are really for caravans or mobile homes and are way too rough to pitch a tent on. However, between each pitch is a patch of grass, and although it was a snug fit, we were able to pitch out Vango Inspire 600 with awning on the grass between two handstanding pitches.
The grass is well maintained, however it dips towards the hedge line which meant the foot of our air beds were significantly higher than the head. This wouldn't be an issue with a smaller tent but as ours completely filled the space we had no choice but to pitch right up to the hedge.
The site is very basic. Although the wash facilities are very clean there is only one shower in the ladies and it is hardly private. A glass cubicle at the end of the row of toilets with just a shower curtain to protect your privacy. This was not an issue for us though as we were the only campers on the field for 4 of the 7 days we were there. The men's shower is a little more private, being situated in a small room at the end of the toilet block.
Showers are on a meter which uses 40p but we did get 4 showers for one payment. There is also a washing machine and tumble dryer which are operated from the same meter. The instructions tell you that £3 will give a mixed load wash lasting 1 1/2 hours and £1 will give 40 minutes in the tumble dryer. There is an area for washing dishes but it is outside so not the best when raining. There is just one tap for filling water bottles etc but on such a small field this was not an issue.
The biggest downside for us was the long walk to the toilet block. We were on the first pitch on the field but is was still at least 200m (300 steps -we counted!) from our tent to the toilet. We were really pleased we had our portaloo for late night visits, especially as it rained heavily every night!
Overall we were happy with this site, despite the lack of facilities, and would definitely stay again.

Just spent the bank holiday weekend here as a base. Being in a motorhome we didn't use the showers or wash areas. We booked late so there wasn't any hook up hard standing left, our fault we only booked 2 days before. We stayed in the top field on grass. This was excellent for us as we have a dog and there is a field a very short walk away which is ideal for exercising them with no lead on. You are asked to keep your dog on a led in certain parts of the site. The bar had a beer festival on during our stay so was very busy so its best to book an evening meal at the time of booking if you want one. We ate there Sunday night which was excellent and rather filling. You are also allowed to take your dog into the pub. The site we feel is ideally placed near enough to all the major tourist spots but far enough out to avoid the tourist masses. There are however a lack of shops within walking distance. The cost is £20 with hookup we were charged £15 the same as a tent which seemed fair to us. Would we stay here again, Defiantly.

This is small site situated behind The Wheatsheaf pub in Low Lorton. There is a mixture of statics and tourers facilities are fine, though a little dated.
The pub itself is great with a range of beers and great food. There is also a small shop in the pub for supplies.
It's in a great location - ideal for exploring the north western fells.

Came here to visit friends nearby. Never been here before and it is beautiful. The campsite is behind local pub in a small village. Pub also serves as local shop and café. Camping field is in field behind statics. The only toilets and shower [1 female 1 male] are at the back of the pub. Single washing up sink is in pub car park! Not acceptable. Needs lots of investment. Site frequented by lots of walkers and D of E students. Lots of space. Approximately 8 electric pitches. Tidy, open surrounded by trees and hedges. Lots of wildlife including a red squirrel! Walking from site. Ate in pub which was good. Visited Cockermouth, Keswick and Bassenthwaite lake which was great.

Nice pub with local Jennings brew. Nice meals as well, country pub atmosphere. Tents and tourers are at the top of the site beyond all the static pitches. There had been a lot of rain and the hardstanding areas were separated from the one pot holed track running up the centre of the site; we were lucky to be able to get onto the hardstanding without getting bogged. £20 flat rate all in (including electric hook up), 30p and a walk down to the back of the pub for a shower. The location is the overriding reason for staying here. Cockermouth is the nearest town complete with a Sainsburys and some town life. Trout hotel, terrace bar, for a good meal recommended. Whinlatter visitor centre, keswick town, Honister mine - all good stuff and not too far.

We found this to be a fantastic little campsite. It wasn't overly busy but enough people around to give a pleasant atmosphere. The owner was very laid back and nothing was too much trouble even though he also runs the pub.
Although in a tent, we got a caravan pitch to have electric. The pitch was big enough for our Tigris 800, with side awning on the hard standing and car next to it.
The whole site was very clean and tidy, even the toilet and shower block which although from the outside don't look anything special, were a very high standard. The showers operate on a coin meter - 30p gives you plenty of hot water. There is also a washing machine & tumble dryer for £2 but this is situated in the ladies' block. The toilets are near the entrance to the site so a little walk if you're right at the end of the site but it's a straight path so impossible to get lost!
There's no play area for kids but our two girls had a great time just making use of the open space, and there is a village park with swings just a short walk away.
Next time we go to the Lake District we'll definitely return to this site!

We have just stayed at this site for 4 nights and had a lovely time. The facilities are ample and clean, although a bit of a walk from the camping area. The road has a fair few pot holes but other than that I have no complaints. The pub/restaurant on site is absolutely spot on, with delicious food and a good selection of beer.
The highlight for me was the barn owls nesting in a tree on the edge of the site, and the toads and hedgehogs out most nights after sunset.
A truly beautiful site perfect for anyone wanting to be surrounded by the wildness of the lakes, and a short drive from both Cockermouth and Buttermere.

Turned up here late on Friday evening after driving off site we had booked as it was so awful. The owner could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Lovely site in a lovely location. Lots of static vans but everyone very friendly. Quiet and peaceful.
Only 4 miles from Cockermouth and ideal base to tour the western lakes.Big hardstanding pitches and well tended grass. Lovely walks straight off the site. Facilities not the most luxurious but spotlessly clean and more than adequate. Pub lovely and food fab. So good we have left our van and are returning next weekend.
Highly recommended.
