Nice site but toilet and shower blocks very tired, much needed updating. Went for a break and do bit of fishing but very disappointed as ponds and banks overgrown, could do with having fishing platforms.
Not really the best site we have been to for fishing. No shops nearby but minor essentials could be purchased at reception. It was a bit noisy at nights with the sugar factory being close by.
Don't think we would go back again just not for us.

Another few days spent at Smeatons in August. We really do like it here despite the sense that it is a little tired round the edges it is in a lovely spot and it is just a wonderfully laid back environment. Some friends stayed in a tent for a couple of nights whilst we were there. The pitch they had was enormous and next to ours so all in all we had a pitch the size of a field!
We didn't use the facilities so cannot comment.
Newark is a wonderful little town and the pubs are brilliant.
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back.

This place could be nice but. The lakes weren't managed properly & are overgrown with rickety fishing pegs not fit for purpose. Don't bother fishing here as the only fish are at the local chippy wrapped in paper.
Then there's the pungent smell wafting around the site, the showers that go off every 15 seconds so you have to keep pressing the button etc etc.

We recently stayed a few nights here and what a lovely site. If you appreciate wildlife and nice scenery, this is a great site. Formations of geese fly over morning and night. We watched herons, rabbits and woodpeckers to name a few. On arrival, the warden was very helpful. Our pitch was scenic and a good size.
A quiet site. The facilities were not the most most modern, but our shower and toilet block although small (3 showers, 3 toilets) were always clean. You have to use a code to get in the toilet block, which was a bit of a pain.
Good for cycling and close to Newark, we would definitely come again.

I have stayed at Smeatons a couple of times recently - four nights in September 2015 and 3 nights in march this year.
In September I stayed with 3 mates whilst we attended the Newark Blues Festival; recently with my partner for a weekend meeting some friends in Newark.
The site itself is pretty basic with facilities that are ok; that said I have really enjoyed it both times I have stayed and we will certainly be going back. The warden and owner are really friendly and helpful and give you plenty of info on arrival. Pitches are a really good size and the site is pretty open giving a further sense of space.
It is a bit jaded and seen better days and the British Sugar factory next door can be a bit noisy but there is something endearing about Smeatons.
As for Newark, the Just Beer Micropub is sensational, there are a good few other very good pubs, plenty of restaurants and there is plenty to do with the castle and a really nice antique shop.
We will definitely return, probably later in the year.

Stayed here but was disappointed, toilets and showers near the lake had a strong smell of damp, Pitched near the lake traffic was very loud residents leaving for work very early. Nice walks around the lakes. On bus route to Newark, shop is small but you can get daily papers, you have to pay on an electric meter as this isn't included in pitch fee. Could possibly do with some improvements to toilet blocks

We went to smeatons and stayed on the rally field. The field was flat with water points. We did not use the washing up facilities as we used disposable plates, but they did look a bit dated and unclean. The site is very big with many lakes for fishing and some nice walks. The main problem to be aware of if staying on the rally field is you are only allowed to use the single male and single female toilet near the rally field. The main toilet block which also has showers is on a key pad when we asked for the number we were told as we are on the rally field we could not have it. So no showers and very limited toilet provision shared with 100 plus others (DISGUSTING). Also on the friday a young group turned up and built a large metal rig to hold speakers lights ect, the thing must have been 20 foot high and run off generators, the reception person came to see what was happening but just left them to it. Would I return ? NO. If this is the future of camping were packing it in.

Stayed here from Thursday 27th March through to Monday 31 March. The weather was perfect, best of the year so far.
We booked this site for the fishing. Set in 80 acres with lakes with supposedly abundance of fish for my carp angler of a husband to test out his skills to bring to the bank to photograph (each to their own!) The site is very easy to find and it is possible to pitch overlooking a lake.
Amenities are very good, free showers and very clean - however the ladies did have a strong smell of damp. The pitches are level and the electrics are on a meter - not excessively expensive it only cost £7 for 4 days and I did have the electric heating on in the evenings. Although close to a road there was no noise disturbance.
The security on site was excellent and can understand why so many store their caravans there and several are pulled out and pitched for their owners to just show up and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The only downside is that there was not a lot of fish! I understand that a great deal of stock was lost in the recent floods and have not yet been replaced.
All in all a very pleasant stay and a site we would return to only if the lakes are restocked as there are lots of other sites in the surrounding area with familiar facilities but with fish.

Just Left Smeaton lakes, with mixed reviews,
Site is easy to get to with a good entrance and the pitches are well set out with plenty of room for both caravan and car. Some rock pegs are needed for your awning because part of it is on the hard standing. Showers are clean, that is the top ones where we were pitched, but only 2 toilets and 3 showers in the gents, which might be a little stretched in a busy time. Price £17 ppn
The fishing is not as you read in their site information, Reed coarse lake is ok but most of the caravans that are sited in front of it tend to claim the pegs first, but you are told that you can fish there. There is the other side but not as good. Pond number 2 coarse lake only has 3-4 pegs that are fishable, the rest are in need of a lot of repair. Pond number 3 carp lake was very steep to the pegs and they too needed major repair
Site reception people are very helpful. Also the site was 1 mile from Newark and has footpaths all the way in to the town

Went on this site on short notice. On arrival we were greeted with a very sharp speaking lady. Stayed for 3 nights FRI/MON. Elec tripped for 2hrs FRI/SAT had to wait for elec board. Told reception would be fetching grand kids they where fine but perm tourers was very upset so it should be adult only or have put us away from them. Had to keep kid in awning this spoilt weekend. Campsite was ok but permanent campers thought they had the right to rule where you went, walked, play etc. Campshop was just newspaper and small amount of goods so not a shop really. Showers good and always clean and plenty hot water. Plenty of room on the pitch for caravan/awning but take good hard ground pegs. All in all if away from the perms and had a play area for the kids probably go again
