This site is real value for money at £16 p/n with elecric, and the people that run it are extremely friendly.
You are allowed to book your pitch in advance so you can get the plot you want and don't have to drive around the site looking for a plot, and if the plot you book is not being used you can go onto the site before 12 noon and can stay later than 12 noon on departure day at no extra cost.
The toilets could do with updating but are clean and warm and well looked after.
There are several lakes for fishing and plots right next to the lake if you book early enough.
Just over 1 mile into Newark, which is a lovely little market town with shops, restaurants, takeaways and pubs.Newark showground also very close.
Looking forward to our next visit in july.

This place is very friendly have been going consistently for weekends away for the past three years.
The price is very agreeable £15 p/n, for electric.
The staff are very sociable not sure what other people are on about but we found them quite informative.
The toilets have to be code locked constantly due to reports of gypsies and Anglers using the toilets with no authority. This I can fully appreciate.
There can some times be a funny smell. Unfortunately this through no fault of the site. Most of Newark smells like this when the sugar beet factory is in operation, which can provide your stay with a strange smell of sulphur. It isnt prevalent and other days can smell worse than others. It never bothers me and the site has always been busy, despite this.
In conclusion its a well managed, well maintained site in a prime location in terms of Newark, fishing and accessibility!

Brilliant weekend,totally enjoyable experience!
This is a good, clean and well maintained site.
The grass is kept neat and the ground is well packed clay and no problem for pegging(given a steady pressure)
Loads of room and an open aspect yet enough trees for windbreaks if blowy.
Great toilet/shower block and a handy simple toilet as well - bit of a walk to the main block but you'd walk as far to find the sugar at Morrisons!
20 minute walk to Newark(no,I'm not young OR fit!)yet little intrusion from road, rail or industry.
Friendly and helpful people running the site,
All in a really good,straightforward set-up.
Happy to recommend it

I am a regular visitor to Smeatons lakes as both my husband and I are avid anglers and the fishing around Smeatons is very good although the Carp lake is hard, Lesley the manager is very nice and helpful which is more than can be said for the warden.
Toilets are usually cleaned daily and plenty of hot water, nothing entertainment wise on site which is reflected in the price, but Newark isn't that far away. Takeaways delivered to the gate which is always a bonus when camping or caravanning.
The bailiff is a very knowledgeable man around the fishing.

Nice welcome but I had pre booked the fishing & it was not as I had requested. Great site, toilets and showers clean enough. Lots of walking actually around the site where you can easily find a quiet spot.
Sugar factory can be heard but I can't say it bothered me. We were pitched right next to the front lake. Such a shame that the fishing was very very poor. I didn't see one decent fish caught by the 20 plus anglers trying their hardest over a 4 day period.
The other lakes look wild and interesting with lots of places to hide away.(still didn't see any fish caught though)
The river was a great option for me and I was a happy chappie.
Would definitely come again.

2nd visit to this site, large site with some seasonal vans. Good facilities, some nice pubs off site (except the village one by the river Trent ! brother in law had his car broken into, car park hidden from view of pub - can't remember the name at the moment but will post when I do)
For you anglers the site has some great fishing, caught a pb tench & a couple of eels for the first time. Will definitely be back some day.

I recently stayed at Smeatons Lakes over the Bank Holiday
The plus side of things
Nice site but traffic noise could be intrusive at times
Plenty of fishing if you wanted it and very well laid out as well
Very handy for Newark shopping
The Minus side of things
The washing up facilities were grim. Two Belfast sinks that had seen better days.
The plate drainer was a filthy plastic thing. The same piece of soap was there 3 days running as was some filthy kitchen towel
The showers worked well and the WCs were clean but the buildings themselves felt dingy
The Staff could do with a bit of customer relations training.
When I arrive at a site it's nice to be greeted with a smile and a welcome not 'What do you want?' said in a very off hand manner.
Several of my friends had the same ill-mannered welcome on arrival.

Stayed here for a weekend break. The campsite seemed 'bare' - it didn't seem to have much character. Didn't help that it was really windy and the field didn't offer much shelter or protection (had to rethink the way the tent was facing!)
Our pitch was quite a walk from the toilet block which, although admittedly didn't get busy, wasn't really useful being so far away - especially in the early hours!
Pitches were well spaced, we had electric hookups so were amongst mainly caravans, pitches were well spaced.

It is several years ago since we visited this site and it has grown and improved quite a bit. We had a lovely pitch overlooking the main lake which was tarmac hard standing. Although the site was quite full it was very restful, the loos and showers never seemed to get too busy either.
As previous reviews have said buses to Newark are quite frequent and timetables are supplied in the shop/reception.
There are plenty of walks and if you follow the river down to some of the other lakes there are some lovely picnic areas where you can spot lots of wildlife and all sorts of birds.
We will be visiting this site again and luckily it's not that far for us.

We stayed at this park august bank holiday, we really enjoyed it, my husband & son enjoyed the fishing, although some of the pegs are a bit overgrown, my son found it a bit awkward as hes unsteady on his feet. The sites very nice, could do with some more toilets & showers but the ones that are there are very clean. The staff in the office are friendly & helpful. The site could do with having a kiddies park to keep them entertained. On the whole we enjoyed our stay & definatley would go back.
