A good site for access to Newark, although the site was a bit basic it was cheap and the staff were very friendly.
The showers were good and hot although sometimes smelled from the drains, but clean enough
Only real complaint is there was nowhere near enough water filling and water waste disposal points. Was a long walk to empty the water waste and was dangerous having to lift a sewer grate then rolling waste container over an open sewer hole.
Be warned this is a basic site but this is offset by the price.
There is also a British sugar factory next door which was operational 24/7 which was not that noisy but did smell on occasions and seemed to have left a filmy deposit on our awning.
As I am not a fisherman I cannot comment on this.

Just spent five days here had a fantastic time.
In our party of 14 not one complaint.
However I tend to agree with the other posts on the lack of stocked ponds-but on the other hand, a decent walk to the far end of the lakes- such as the fingers will produce a good range of fishing due to the fact that people don't walk as far with their gear. This is where we produced our best fishing.
The scenery and campsite is outstanding.
We went into Newark itself which was only 10 mins away by car. Had a nice day there-walk down the canals and boat trips daily if required.
Shower facility's good and kept clean.
Basic items in shop but aldi asda-morrisons only 10 mins away.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Would I go again----without a shadow of doubt.
The 2 negative points are 1 that we will still charged extra to fish.
Secondly if your children don't like fishing or walking you will have a job entertaining them.

Having been to this site a couple of times before over the years I was surprised how it had grown, there were many more hard standing than on previous visits.
The pitches were spacious the wardens helpful and the facilities near us were away from the main reception and were clean and adequate. The shop sell essentials at reasonable prices.
The walks around the lakes are very relaxing and for a longer walk we went along the river.
There is a bus stop outside with a regular sevice into Newark.
This site is not far from home but it feels like it could be miles away.
The only thing I found a little annoying was quite a lot of barking dogs but this was not the fault of the site, just a few thoughtless owners.

We have just spent a very enjoyable weekend on this site, although the weather wasn't great on the Friday it was better on Saturday and even better on Sunday.
The site is well laid out with good size pitches in very pleasant surroundings, it is clean & well looked after, staff are helpful and my eldest son had a great time fishing while the two younger boys had great fun exploring.
On the Saturday we spent the day in Newark which has a great market.
We will be going again sometime in the near future.

We visited this site for the second time in June this year. The pitches we were given were lovely, over looking one of the lakes.
The shower block is kept very clean and tidy but they are starting to look a little aged but that would not put us off.
The fishing hard work and attention is needed to construct proper fishing stages.
One thing that our friends and ourselves were not happy with is that although you have your pitch till 12 noon, both our friends and ourselves were 'pushed' off the pitches due to the staff wanting to bring caravans out of storage ready for the owners to arrive. In particular, as we pulled off our pitch, the site staff were waiting with a caravan only 10 feet away to put on to our pitch!
We will still return to this site but we feel the our comments are well justified and need addressing.

On arrival at the site we booked in and shown where our pitch was. Many of the prime pitches with a reasonable outlook were already taken by seasonal bookings. It would have been nice to actually see the lake but couldn't due to the unoccupied caravans.
Our pitch, as I have said, was facing some scruffy bushes. The hard standing had more than a few 'dog ends' scattered about, just outside our door.
The Toilet / Showers were very warm and secured by a combination lock. Whilst being acceptable, the shower floors could do with a deep clean around the edges during the winter.
The biggest fault with this site is the location, near the British Sugar plant which was in full production. The smell was overpowering and prevented and sitting out, even if the weather allowed it. If you use this site, avoid the sugar beet season.
Facilities; fishing, no WIFI, £2. 60 return bus fare into Newark.

Having read the previous reviews my husband and I must have been on a different site, yes the shower block was lovely and warm and plenty of hot water and powerful showers, the pitches where we were sited were large, unfortunately that where it ends for positive reviews. We decided to go to this site after reading the reviews but we were very disappointed, my husband likes to fish he spent 2 days without a bite let alone catch a fish, he went another 2 days fishing and did catch a few tiddlers but nothing like the brochure said. It also claims all swims are easily accessible, this is not the case, some swims you have to climb down 10 to 15 steps to get to the water, none of the swims were at water level, all had some incline to get to the water. This is the only site that my husband has fished and not caught any carp, he spoke to fisherman on the specified carp pool and they did catch the odd carp.
There were 2 large belfast sinks in the washing up area, no draining boards, had to use loads of water to wash the dishes due to the size of the sink, thankfully I was the only one washing dishes so I was able to wash the dishes and then use the other sink to put the dishes in before drying them.
Traffic on the site was annoying, cars were going up and down from about 5. 45am most mornings, there was a part of the site that caravans etc stayed all year
There was a bus stop outside the site which was very useful and the site shop did sell the essentials, beware if you do go on the bus with a dog, Marshalls do accept dogs of the 4 times we used the bus we had to pay only once for the dog, the other bus company (sorry do not known the name) does not accept dogs.
Will we be going back, sorry we won't.

Spent Aug Bank holiday at Smeatons lakes. Even with it being bank holiday the place was nice and relaxed. Pitches are massive and lots and lots of space between units.
Took the rods this time. The ponds fished ok but were not what I would say real productive. The river was nice with roach almost every cast.
The pegs are tight and some very enclosed. The end peg being the better peg in my opinion for trotting a float down. Having said that there are lots of day ticket waters close by on the Trent well worth exploring
Other than the weather. We had a fantastic long weekend

Stayed at this site for 2 weeks. After having been there with my wife for a few days I found it to be a very well thought out site, busy yes at weekends, but during the week very quiet.
The staff were very friendly and toilets and showers clean.
Entry to the site is by swipe card and you can come and go as you please with no time limit on when you can come and go, very useful if you have quests.
Fishing is difficult but you have to get it right and when you do it is frantic
Very close to shops etc. Plenty to see and do small shop on site for basic needs
Overall had a very nice stay.

If you are looking for rolling hills in the middle of no where then Smeatons is not the place for you.
However If you are looking for a well laid out site that has spacious level pitches, close to a small picturesque town that is a stones throw from the A1 then this ticks all the boxes.
Plus if you are into fishing ! you are spoiled for choice weather lake or river there is something there for you (even a well stocked winter pike lake with low 30's being taken)
The facilities are clean and the service is as good as it gets and at £16 for a night with electric is a bargain to say the least.
The site is very dog friendly with massive amounts of walking areas just off site to let the dogs have a run and there was no charge for them either.
I need to go back to the service. I think the Warden was Trish?? a Scottish woman and what a real nice helpful woman. Nothing was too much trouble even helping out with a longer cable for us to borrow as ours was a bit too short. When we got there she was not interested in payment nor anything else other than getting us to our pitch so we could get the dogs out for water and a relief.
We are definitely going to revisit but next time the rods and kit are coming with us.
