Date of Visit: August 2012 Unit:  Tent
Reviewer: Outwood13 8 reviews from this member

I visited this site today as I was looking for somewhere close by to pitch my new tent and spend a couple of nights as a test run before we ventured further afield.

Fair enough, the toilets and showers look clean, as do the toilets. The children's playground is basic, and seemingly constantly in shade due to the large trees. The shop was minimally stocked. It did have a nice lounge area attached to the shop, though I am not sure this is for the use of casual visitors.

We spoke to the lady in reception and were told that the site did not really cater for tents - particularly big ones. I told her I only had a small 4 man tent. She then told us we could only pitch the tent near the toilets - literally a few feet from the toilet door, or in the area just over the way from the toilets. She pointed out that the grass is really not level and not suited to tents.

I was really under the impression that tents were distinctly not welcome at this site at all. The other area she had directed us to, would have meant squashing up in between the tourers. Very odd set-up, in my mind.

The site itself is covered in huge trees, as are all of the tent pitches (??)There seemed to be very little sunshine on the grass - everything was in the shade.

There were a lot of very established tourers with awnings - clearly, the majority of 'tourers' reside at the park on a long term basis, with their flat screen tvs in their awnings, full- sized furniture, and established gardens.

One tent looked as it if had been pitched there for months! It looked covered in green muck, as did many of the tourers and their awnings.

This site is apparently a 5 star, but perhaps this relates only to the 'static caravan' sections which lay beyond the (electric) gates further into the site.

I won't be going back for my trial run. The camp had an odd feel, it had no atmosphere at all, and the reception/owner/lady in charge was distinctly anti-tents. Back to the drawing board for me.

We found out about Nostell Priory park from a friend so we thought we would check it out for ourselves so we booked for 3 nights and took both dogs.

On arrival we checked in with reception and were shown where to pitch our caravan and shown where the amenities were.

Toilet/shower blocks both very clean and warm. This site is very quiet and peaceful. There's 2 large lakes if you like doing a spot of course fishing.

There's the manor house which you can visit and there's plenty of open space to walk your dog(s). You're not far from Wakefield town or Ackworth, Hemsworth, Pontefract are all close by.

We will be making a return visit soon.

We had an overnight stay here and it was lovely. The showers and loos are clean and to a high standard.

The surroundings are very peaceful and secluded, well away from roads. It is very rural and it was good to see children playing safely away from traffic on their bikes etc.

Our two dogs loved the woodland for their walks.

The motorhome pitch was level and hardstanding, with easy access and plenty of space.

We went to the Cock and Crown pub in the next village for the best value carvery ever!

This is a lovely site with a real sense of getting away from it all.

I stayed here for a week in April which turned out to be a very wet week, however the tent area which is under trees was not suited at all for pitching tents as there is no grass, so even a short shower would turn the area into a mud pit.

The showers were ok but nothing really to shout about.

The price is very steep and I for one will not be going back.

Situated in the grounds of Nostell priory, the site is in a peaceful location ideal for walks.

There are no pubs or shops within easy walking distance.

The site is generally well kept and very clean and dogs are welcome. There is a small play area for young children. A cafe is on site.

In my opinion the site is too expensive for what it offers. Payment is made at the time of booking.

The site has many rules. Rules are posted everywhere. It is the only site that I have ever stayed at where one has to inform reception before having a BBQ! There is a no loud noise after 10pm rule, you may see this as a positive or negative depending on your lifestyle. Personally the site was too quiet for me.

The motorhome waste water disposal point could not be used as it is situated in a busy car park, so we could not get near it

Showers are best described as adequate and I believe the area was not heated, although they were spotlessley clean and free. EHU is 6. 5 amps.

If you are staying here to go to Kinsley dog track, we were charged £7 each way in a taxi.

£27 a night for caravan 2 adults 2 children seemed a little expensive for february but thought we would give it a try. Warden in office on arrival was pleasant and told us where to pitch, from then on it went downhill. The only tarmac was the roadway around the site, everywhere else was either badly laid hardcore or mud, I know for this time of year you expect it not to be dry but our car struggled just to reverse our van on to the pitch, had to reverse over mud to get to a hardcore pitch, which was quite small, decided not to put awning up, just too muddy. There is a sign saying to leave car in the car park when weather is bad, however the car park again is just hardcore and when wet is slippery and messy, car was a complete mess inside and out, I think to stay here you definitely need a 4*4, take wellington boots. The site to me seemed to be favouring seasonal pitches, the touring area looks as if its been neglected, the site however was quiet during our stay and there were plenty of places for walking, however when you get home you'll have some cleaning to do, car and caravan.

Just got back from Nostell Priory Park and genuinely couldn't fault it.

We found the reception staff incredibly polite and helpful when booking over the phone, received a warm greeting on arrival and were really welcomed by the other seasonal pitchers. Still amazed how friendly everyone was!

We took our folding camper, very good rates of stay and got a lovely spot to pitch up at. Close to amenities, very clean shower block, nice little cafe/entertainment area. Very dog and child friendly too which was important to us.

Enjoyed the most amazing walks up to the grounds of Nostell Priory itself, our 5 year old daughter was made up by the 100s of ladybirds enjoying the woodland, as well as the lakes, lily pads and dragonflies! Great little play area and secure grounds to explore in. Only sad point was that we weren't there long enough! A must to revisit even if we are 2. 5 hours away.

We knew we were 'near the toilet block' on booking but didn't realise quite how close until we arrived. This turned out ok thought as it was like being at home when going to the loo or the wash area!

This pitch also looked in better condition that the 'tent area' which was under trees.

We found this site very well kept, with an extremely clean and modern toilet and shower block. There was always very hot water, soap, loo roll and paper towels available.

The separate shower room had four showers (I believe the mens was the same) and wash basins, baby changing table and free hairdryer. In the wash room (again beautifully clean) were two industrial size washers and one dryer, three sinks and an ironing board (irons available to hire).

This site obviously favours caravans and motorhomes but don't let that put you off as the facilities are superb. This was the nearest site I could find to Diggerland which was an excellent day out.

We stayed here over the weekend and found the site pleasant. Set in a woodlands setting around the Nostell priory estate.

The site was quite full for the time if year and we later found out that this was due to several seasonal touring caravan pitches. The pitch where we were placed was reasonable with grassed area with a gravelled area for your awning which we found uncomfortable underfoot. All the grassed areas were muddy and upturned grass where cars had driven over it. It was a nightmare trying to avoid getting muddy. We came to the belief that this was due to the time of year and it would be better altogether in the spring/summer.

The playground was basic with swings but the children who were playing there seemed to enjoy it. The toilet block was always clean and their were three showers in each room which were spacious.

We found the price for this time of year expensive we had 2 adults, two teenagers, one dog and an awning and the price covered the electric hook up (although only 6.5 amps!) the price per night was £26.

Local pub nearby The cock and crown fantastic carvery for brilliant price and nostell priory worth a visit.

Score out of 10 is 7. But maybe higher score in summer. Would we go back maybe in summer give it another chance.

Visited this site for the first time last w'end with several friends. The group consisted of 4 adults,2 dogs and 3 kids in a large 9 man tent, 4 adults and 2 dogs in a 5 man and a couple in a 2 man, for 2 nights.

The site itself is lovely and the shower/toilet facilities great and spotlessly clean, but I felt treated very much like second class citizens compared to people in caravans.

On arrival we were informed by the lady at reception that the tent area 'was not looking its best'. The camping area is small and the ground uneven, it's situated under large trees and full of mud and puddles, it is not suitable at all for tents, especially large ones.

Admittedly it was raining when we arrived and it got harder throughout the day, but we are not fair-weather campers and are used to the British weather. But due to the thick mud and huge puddles, erecting the tents was a struggle and we all got filthy.

The porch of our tent, (even with a ground sheet down) became a slippery quagmire and even though everyone took shoes and wellies off before getting in the tent, it was impossible to keep the inside clean and dry. There were tree roots and branches sticking up through the floor and the whole tent was on a slope with a stream running beneath it!

Even if the weather had been ok, there wasn't that much to do, as there were no ball games or barbecues allowed and the kids play area was on the other side of the site.

The annoying thing was that there were dry, flat areas around the site suitable for tents, but we would have been spoiling the view of the clean, dry people in their caravans!

Needless to say we had a damp and uncomfortable evening and we told our friends in the 2 man not to bother coming as there was nowhere suitable for them to pitch!

The next day the sun came out, but the whole area outside the tents was muddy and full of puddles. It was slippery and dangerous and everyone was filthy within minutes.

We stuck our wellies on and enjoyed a great day in the gardens and grounds of the Priory(campsite users get a free pass). Some of us paid the extra £2 or so to go into the House itself which was interesting, and the adventure playground was great fun.

Back at the campsite we asked for a refund for our friends who hadn't been able to come the previous night,(we had to pay in full when booking), but were told that under no circumstances were refunds given!

We tried to make the best of a bad job, but the final straw was when a huge BRANCH(over a metre long), fell from the trees above, glanced of the tent and landed making a hole in the ground right next to where we were sitting.
