Just back from our first visit to cefn maelan. This was a lovely find on the way back from touring around north wales, a site down the hill would not let us stay as there was no dogs allowed. So saw the sign for caravan and camping and pulled in. So glad we did the owner was so helpful finding us a level spot in the sunshine he couldn't do enough for us to make us welcome. The facilities are spotless and we could only stay one night, the owner said we did not have to rush off the next day and to stay as long as we like. He was great with the dog even though all his sheep were around with their lambs. I am looking forward to our return and hopefully we will stay longer.

Excellent site. Spotless facilities - absolutely immaculate - lovely clean showers and toilet block. Very friendly and helpful hosts who gave us tips on how to get into town and answered all our questions. This site has the most exceptional views out over Cadir Idris and was a wonderful place to camp.
We had a dog with us who was welcomed - even though this is a working sheep farm. We found the field nice, flat and sheltered yet still with amazing mountain views. We cooked with our stove looking out over the mountain before taking a leisurely 10 minute stroll down to Dogellau to some very friendly (dog and otherwise) drinking houses.
We'd been driving and camping in different places around South and Mid-Wales all week and this was by far and away the best site we stayed in.

Fantastic campsite!
We spent many of our British holidays here (we are Dutch), when our children were young. They had really great times at the sheepfarm.
Very clean, very friendly owners. Big, flat places and so much more when you don't need electricity.
Lots of people are coming here -like we used to do- for many years.
Fantastic views over the mountains, even from your own caravan or tent.
Good start for fine walks or cycling tours. The village is nearby, especially when you use the path through te fields.
We hope to return next summer.

This site is lovely, the owners Archie & Kath will do anything they can to help you, my husband & I have been staying at this site every weekend for the last 3 years we have also enjoyed full weeks holiday thier to. Whether its rain, shine, windy it doesn't matter as the air is clean & the scenery is fantastic.
The camp site is just the right size not too many caravans on, every one that comes here have done so for many years,
The site is so clean the shower-toilet blocks are cleaned every day 2-3times then at night when every 1 has settled down for the night,
The site has 1 downfall it doesn't have a little shop for milk eggs etc, this has been mentioned to the owner & has informed me he is looking in to it, It has hook up plenty of space between vans, plenty of space for the kids to play, it doesn't have a play gound but that doesn't bother the kids, they all play together & get the other famlies to join in, A bonus is Archie is very Child Friendly he enjoys all the children being around.
The price to stay here is very reasonable & you can leave it all week till you go again for a very small charge.
You are just a short drive to the local spar & the small market town, if you like walking you can always walk thier, you are also just a short drive to Barmouth & Harlech about an hour to Porthmadoc.
Cefnmaelan is set on top of the snowdonia moutains & is a Fantastic place to stay.

Have been staying here on and off for over thirty years since I was a child. Despite the fact that it now gets really busy during peak times, it is still our favourite place in North Wales.
Over the years Archie and Kath have gradually built up the facilities and with last years revamp of the toilet block and washing facilities we have moved into new territory. They work hard to keep everything clean, tidy and most importantly. Simple.
Sadly my Mum & Dad can't get out here anymore but Archie always asks after them. With the availability of the statics, I have had family coming up from Somerset to stay and they actually rave about it. There is nothing to beat the views over the Cadair range in the evening as the sun sets (especially with a drink in your hand and a BBQ going!)
The site is great for kids and our daughters (7 and 13 as I write) really enjoy the freedom the site has to offer. The youngest is never short of friends and we occassionally we meet up with people we met years ago.
Great place for getting out and enjoying the walks, fishing, beaches (Barmouth, Fairbourne etc)and cycling.
We are keen walkers and this August we found a place for collecting Chanterelle mushrooms by the basket load (delicious!) and tried a new route up Cadair Idris via Lyn Cau (really breathtaking).
Will be going back out again this year and holding the annual family & friends get together in May.

A great campsite, a fantastic warm welcome from the owners and the most amazing views. We stayed over the bank holiday weekend, my sister was in a static caravan which was spotless and huge, other friends in 3 additional tents and a touring campervan.
Shower block was extremely clean, good supply of toilet roll and soap. Showers 50p for about 6 minutes.
Good location for exploring the area, fantastic walks all around, fantastic local Spar shop for those things you may have forgotten.
We had one bad night of thunder and heavy rain and the site seemed able to cope with the downpour and we were not water logged.
I would recommend this site to anyone staying in the area. We paid £6.50 per person per night which seemed great value for this very nice site.
I would have rated the facilities higher but I would have liked a small on-site shop but there is a big shop very close by

Just stayed here for the second time. As lovely a site as previously [about 2 years back]. Weather kinder to us this time and the views across the valley to Cadair Idris were even more stunning.
Archie had revamped the toilet block since last time we were there. All very nicely upgraded - top quality stuff. A couple of minor 'asks' would be a couple of hooks or similar for towels near the sinks and a shelf for shower gel etc in the revamped cubicles.
The new 'EuroSpar' down the hill at the edge of Dolgellau was well stocked with basics and more. We tended to take the kids to nearby Fairbourne beach which was about 15 or so mins away. Always quiet seemingly and the butchers in Fairbourne do top burgers of various types for those beach barbies.
Will certainly go back again. Lovely spot, really quiet, Archie is great - we were treated to a 'sheep roundup' today which the kids were intruiged with - apparently a good day to sell them at the Bala market!

This is a great site in a tranquil setting with lovely views. It's on a farm so you sleep and wake to the sound of sheep and I have to admit to feeling just a little guilty listening to the lamps bleating whilst my hubbie was cooking up his speciality - lamb cassarole! The site is very well maintained with spotlessly clean toilet and shower blocks. Archie the owner is a genuinely nice bloke, he is proud of his site, welcoming and helpful. He likes things to be kept neat and tidy and that suits us perfectly. In fact we like this site so much that we are spending another week end there shortly and intend to stay many more times for as long as we remain campers. See you soon Archie!

Cefn Maelan site is a gem and is run by the very “customer focused” Archie Jones, who likes things ship-shape. There is not a trace of litter anywhere and even his sheep seem to clean up after themselves. The toilet block has just had a total refurb and is a credit to his thoroughness.
There is an excellent Spar shop ¾ of a mile away on the road into town, selling local produce, some with only 14 road miles on the label!
Dolgellau is a small town with a lot of Victorian charm. It has a few bakeries, an excellent climbing shop, cycle hire and “proper” hardware shop
It is a good base to do the Mawddach Trail. This is a splendid 10 mile level trail which runs between Dolgellau and Barmouth. The surface is very good compacted fine hardcore that has been laid over the original rail line and can be walked, ridden on horseback (on some sections only) but best cycled, even on an ordinary bike.
It starts at the main car park in Dolgellau but if you want to save £3.50 pay and display fee then use the free car park just west of the town where the A493 meets the A494.
You can then invest this saving at the George III pub which lies at Penmaen Pool, a few miles into the trail. There is a toll booth at the Barmouth end of the rail / foot bridge that spans the estuary. Barmouth is a jolly “Kiss me quick” sort of a place but has a nice beach and plenty of eateries.

We visited this site with a tent last year and where so impressed with it that we have now bought a caravan to keep on the site for the Summer. The site is very tidy and well kept. Archie is very friendly and always willing to help.
The views are absolutely stunning with some lovely walks locally. Dolgellau is a lovely little town and only 15 minutes walk away (although it is uphill all the way back). We will be spending as many weekends as possible there this year.
