Very basic but absolutely brilliant site. Great welcome by the lady owner and very good value for money. The site is terraced away from the parking area and towards the edge of the lake which can be seen through the trees from all pitches.
Only one shower but fine, a drying room and a campers room with fridge and lots of comfortable seating.
A good but fantastic 20 minute walk along the shore to the pub - good basic food for under £10 a head.
This site has a very wild camping feel about it without the inconvenience. Thoroughly recommended.

Just returned from a 2 night stay. Site location and facilities are very good, owner (James) is very friendly and helpful.
Pitch price is very competitive and value for money, good showers, toilets, washing up area. Lovely lake side walk (20 mins) to Buttermere.
On still evenings midges can be a problem due to the very sheltered location.
Would I use this site again, Yes I would.

We have just returned from a short break at this fabulous campsite. The position is spectacular, right on the edge of lake Buttermere - well along a very short path, but we had a lovely view of the lake through the trees.
The guest house and camp site are run by the most engaging, enthusiastic and friendly couple, who are very helpful and have a good knowledge and deep love of Buttermere and the local area - a combination which makes for a relaxed, friendly, happy stay.
After such a hard winter, James is working hard to re-seed parts of the camping terraces and his hard work is paying off, fresh new grass sprouting everywhere.
The campsite facilities work well with lots of lovely ideas to make camping more comfortable, including a warm, dry seating area with fridge / freezer, a drying room (which I was tempted to sleep in as the nights have been rather cold!)
The all important washing up sink has hot water and a roof in case of rain, and although there is only one shower in the ladies toilet block, (50p), it lasted a long time, was hot and spacious and clean and the site is small enough not to over stretch the facilities.
We saw red squirrels, lots of birds - the swallows have arrived earlier there than at home, and although we are not 'hikers' we enjoyed some lovely strolls directly from the site - no car driving, heaven.
We didn't see the otters - but think we did see the trace of one in the lake on the first evening - but we'll save that for the next visit; we will certainly be returning to this beautiful, peaceful and relaxing place, made more so by the couple running it.
The nearest 'shopping' is Keswick or Cockermouth so make sure you bring enough milk unless you fancy a trip out and there is no mobile phone coverage - at all or within miles of the site, absolute bliss.
There is a pay phone in reception available 24 hours a day should you need it. For the keen hikers, it is a fabulous base, for those of us who are not so fit, it's even more lovely to simple relax in. We are already planning our next visit, see you soon.

This is a really good campsite. It is set on 4 tiers with a pathway leading down to the lake. We stayed for a week and it did get busier at the weekend but it wasn't too noisy, we found it to be peaceful and secluded as its not a massive site. Cars cannot get onto the site which is a good thing (it's not too far to walk from the car park area).
The owners are really friendly and couldn't do enough to help and answer questions. Shower block has just been updated with lovley electric shower (costs 50p but you get plenty of time). Really warm drying room is an extra bonus. No shops close by so come prepared with supplies, although we ate at the Fish Inn in Buttermere which served large portions of good pub food.
We will definitely be returning to this campsite and I would recommend it to anyone!

My stay was for a week before most school holiday's started, so the site was around half full (mainly duke of Edinburgh groups and serious walkers)and good atmosphere.
Has a drying room! - brilliant if you come off the hills soaking, your kit is dry for the next day. Owners are the friendliest people ever, really helpful. Site is quiet, facilities are basic but that's why you are camping!friendly sheep and red squirrels. I guess my only wish for improvement would be the view, because it's in a woody glade so you don't see the lakes or hills (shame really).
Location is wonderful for walking. If you have a car then Keswick is nearest proper shops.
2 pubs around 20mins walk (I prefer The Bridge)
I'll definitely be back. Perhaps with a barbequeue so I can sit there in the evening with a glass of malt at the end of a full day on the mountains.

Beautiful campsite in a great location. Very hot showers and lovely friendly owners.
We stayed here one night as part of a group of twelve people on a three day walking circuit. The toilets were immaculately clean and the showers cost only 50p for plenty of very hot water. More importantly it has a large drying room where we could leave all of our soaking clothes over night - everything was lovely and dry in the morning.
It's less than 20 minutes walk into Buttermere itself where there's a good tea shop and two pubs. The food was delicious.
Because it's also a B&B we were able to order bacon and egg rolls and tea/coffee for the morning to fuel up for our walk on to Borrowdale.

I stayed at this site to do some walking in the area and was very happy with both the facilities and the location. The site is set out over four level tiers which run down towards the lake. The ground was flat, easy to peg into, and despite it being wet most of the week never got too boggy. The site wasn't very busy when I stayed, so noise wasn't a problem, but I should imagine it could feel a little cramped during high season.
There were a couple of sinks and one shower in the gents, which was plenty for the number of people staying on the site. The shower was electric and a 50p coin gave at least 5 minutes of strong, hot water. There was a single sink for washing up outside and a tap for drinking water. The facilities were reasonably tidy, but I'm not sure they were cleaned everyday. There was a drying room, which I didn't use, and the friendly owners were happy to freeze my spare ice packs in their freezer.
The site was about 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk from Buttermere, where there are a couple of pubs and a couple of cafes. I went into the Bridge Hotel in the evenings, which was cosy but quite expensive. It was £3.30 for a pint of Guinness and about £11 for what was essentially fish and chips! I would definitely stay at this site again, but probably only during low season as I should imagine it could get quite crowded in the summer.

Visited this site July 2009. Rang up to enquire and very friendly on phone. Arrived and took last pitch, no restrictions on proximity to other tents. Young couple have just taken over the running of site and have great plans for the place. Great location short walk to lake. Quite small Site on 4 tiers. Toilets and showers clean but basic and sink for washing up. Kelly and James are very friendly and nothing too much trouble, will freeze ice packs and store food in their fridge. No shop as such but can buy water, milk chocolate. Cheap rates and def value for money.

Just been for a long weekend at Dalegarth. On arrival we were welcomed by James, who was very friendly and helpful. He told us he had only been running the site for 3 months, and there is evidence of improvements such as a new shower in the womens block. There is only the one shower, but I was able to use it without queuing for too long.
There are 3 levels on the site and we were allocated to the top level. Convenient for the facilities and close to the car but perhaps less picturesque than the lower levels, which were in a pleasant wooded area. Apparently the top two levels were for reservations and the bottom (and best)level is for those who haven't made reservations.
The site is in a great location, a short stroll from Lake Buttermere and within walking distance of the village. We were also able to do two fantastic walks from the site.
The only niggle was the level of noise. As this was the first weekend we had had decent weather in a while the site was absolutely rammed and because it's in a narrow valley the noise is amplified. There was one group of four young lads who were extremely noisy and played loud music and this seemed to be tolerated. I'm not a noise fascist per se, but I go to the Lakes to escape and relax - not to listen to bad techno.
I would go back to this site, but out of season when I can enjoy it properly.

The campsite is set out on tiers which lead down to the lake. It was quiet when we were here with only a few sheep walking around! The views from here are lovely! The facilities are very basic and if I'm honest let the campsite down because it wouldnt take much to smarten them up! However if like us your ony after a hot shower after a day in the hills then its a perfect location, its within walking distance of haystacks and fleetwith pike. There are a couple of pubs with sunny beer gardens about a 15 minute walk away. For £5 a night you cant grumble!
