Was going to stay at this campsite, but when I arrived (2nd May 2016) I found it closed, and the faded note in the window looks like it has been closed for some time. Not a big issue though as I just went down the road to Skye farm in Buttermere.

Dalegarth Campsite is one of the friendliest I have ever stayed at. First impressions are that the facilities are a bit dingy but this adds to the charm of the site and in fact everything is scrupulously clean and functional.
I paid £7 for a night in my motorhome.
If you want to stay in the Buttermere area with a motorhome this is the only site available. For tents there is an alternative site in the village.
Dalegarth is in a lovely spot and there is a lakeside walk from the site to the village.
Wainwright baggers are in their element here. I have bagged the following on foot from Dalegarth:-
Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, High Crag, High Stile, Red Pike, Mellbreak, Whiteside, Hopegill Head, Grasmoor, Crag Hill, Wandope, Whiteless Pike, Rannerdale Knotts, Robinson, Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy, Maiden Moor, Ard Crags and Knott Rigg and I plan to return in the future to bag some that I have missed.
I would recommend booking ahead as the site is quite popular particularly during settled spells of weather.

Although this site has beautiful surroundings and very near to the lake I'm sorry but I can't say a lot positive about this site. Large groups making a lot of noise until late at night. There was no hot water to wash up with. The toilets and shower was clean though cleaned by what I saw several times a day. But I found the sheep poo a real put off when I was sat outside eating my meals as it was all over and right outside my tent. Also bring plenty of spare strong tent pegs as its difficult hammering them in with the stony ground.
The biggest problem for me though was the noise at nights from the large groups.

Just returned from a camping weekend at Dalegarth Guesthouse & Campsite, Buttermere. The weather was fantastic and really made our weekend.
We arrived to a kind welcome from Kelly who was very helpful.
The campsite is situated just outside the village of Buttermere situated in an idyllic spot just a short walk from the lakeside. The campsite is spread over four (level) descending terraces. We selected our pitch on the top terrace nearest the washrooms.
You can park your car near the top terrace but the lower down the terraces you are, the further you will have to carry your gear.
The site was fairly quiet, perhaps about 10 tents in all. The shower / toilet facilities were clean and tidy although with only one shower in the gents (and ladies) you will expect to queue if the site is busy. There was plenty of hot water to wash up but again there was only 1 wash up sink, again expect to queue at busier times.
Showers at 50p a time I thought were a little dear but there seems to be more sites charging this amount these days.
All in all a great little site with clean and basic amenities (you may have to wait to use them if busy) and some fabulous walks straight from the campsite.

I just want to let you all know that this was my first campsite ever, travelling alone and with a dog, my very first experience in UK and this choice has been great.
The people are friendly, the campsite is clean and tidy, the pitches very well maintained, the setting is absolutely perfect, toilets clean. I could not find a fault.
Regardless of the rain, the midges, the dampness in the tent: this is the place to go!

We have just returned from our first ever camping trip; 3 nights at this great site in a superb location. The site is literally 20 seconds from the lake and a lovely twenty minute walk from the village, pubs and the home made ice cream cafe (amazing ice cream)!
The toilets are clean and sufficient, the showers warm and you get about 5 minutes for your 50p. There is a good drying room and separate communal area with a fridge/freezer with plenty of room.
There was lots of space when we stayed and you could choose your own pitch on any of the 4 levels. James, Kelly and Becky were all friendly and helpful with good knowledge of the area and I heard him offering a lift to the pub for some campers! There were a few midges about but nothing too troubling. You can't park next to your tent but you can very close for unloading the car.
We will definitely be returning in the future due to the location, the competitive price and the owners.

We had a lovely stay at this campsite.
The facilities were good - the shared fridge/freezer and drying room are a real benefit.
Also the sitting room allowed some of the kids who were camping to spend a noisy evening cooking and eating without bothering anyone.
We did many beautiful walks straight from the site, and didn't use the car at all whilst we were there. The lake is only a few minutes away. We could just glimpse it from the tent. (The people who complain they can't see the lake from the site should go round the other side of Buttermere and have a look. We think it wonderful that you can't see the site from the lake ! The surroundings are totally unspoilt and would not improved by multi-colour tents. )
The showers were clean, hot, and 50p lasted too long (I gave up and switched off). The toilets however were cleaned somewhat halfheartedly. One remained fairly disgusting throughout our stay. Another was awaiting repair, so that just left one useable in the Ladies.
We did not meet the owners, but were surprised at the cost of £7 per person, as their website stated £5, and the local notices said £6. We were told it had just increased from £6 to £7.
I hope we will go back again soon

I would love to write a glowing review of this campsite, but unlike the other reviewers I'm afraid I wasn't so impressed by Dalegarth. This site has a lot going for it, especially the location. It's virtually on the shore of lake Buttermere which is only a couple of minutes walk from the site. It's also a very pleasant 20 minute walk along the shore to Buttermere itself.
You couldn't really see the lake from the campsite, in fact you can't really see an awful lot of anything. The site is surrounded by tall trees and whilst affording some protection from the worst of any bad weather, you really didn't get a sense of the surroundings.
The site is small and is divided into four tiers, all level. We were pitched on the third tier. You can't park your car next to your pitch and this means that you have to park your car in the car park and carry all your gear to your pitch. If you are lucky and the site isn't too busy, you might grab one of the car parking spaces next to the shower/toilet facilities, just above the top camping tier. But if not you have to park at the front of the B & B and walk round. It sounds a bit of a pain but it's not too bad and actually makes the site all the more peaceful, there's nothing worse than folk slamming car doors at ungodly hours. We found that if you went out in your car in the evening then you stood a good chance of not being able to find a parking space when you came back though.
We stayed for two nights a Friday and Saturday. The site was already full when we arrived on the Friday night, but fortunately we had telephoned a couple of days ahead to book a pitch. Although there was a sign up saying the camp was full, on the Saturday afternoon a group of approximately 20 - 25 D of E youngsters turned up. Every available space was then taken up by their small tents. You took your life in your hands going to the loo at night, there were guy ropes all over the place, it was like an obstacle course. This not only added to the burden on the facilities it also meant that noise at night was intolerable for me. It is the noisiest site I have ever stayed on. I am sure that mid week and out of school holidays this site it a haven of peace and tranquillity but on the weekend in question it was more like a refugee camp!
The facilities are 'basic' and clean. The facilities in the Ladies comprised of one shower, and three toilets. At the time of our stay one of the toilets in the ladies was out of order, this meant that there was always a long queue, not so good first thing in a morning! The shower was the most expensive I have ever come across, 50p a throw which in my humble opinion is extortionate. I witnessed one lady trying to have a shower, which in the end cost her £1. 50 because it kept running out and the hot water didn't kick in until the second 50p. Oh and when I say witnessed I mean 'saw'. The door on the shower is of the 'stable door' variety which doesn't allow for much modesty and is not my cup of tea. Because of the cost of the shower and the length of the queues I didn't bother having a shower whilst we were there. The hot water in the sinks was a bit 'hit and miss' as well, so a good stand up wash was also out of the question! I agree with paying a small nominal fee for the showers, 20p say, it means that people don't take advantage or leave taps on etc. , but if you were a family I think the cost makes it an unreasonable expense. Having said that the pitches are reasonably priced compared to some sites in the Lake District.
The people who run the place seem very friendly and helpful, and I can see a lot of thought has gone into the site. It's a very 'laid back' sort of site, no real rules about noise etc. , great if you like that sort of thing. I'm sure that our experience is a 'one off' and that most weekends aren't as bad as the one we experienced, but would we stay here again? No.

Small, pleasant campsite very close to the lake. The area is terraced so the ground is flat and seemed well-drained. Certainly no problems after heavy rain when we were there. Facilities are limited (one shower in the gents & one in ladies) but clean enough.
It’s a nice 15 min walk along the lake to a couple of pubs and a café in Buttermere.
BUT though there are rules saying no noise after 10 and no campfires, there were two large groups, both with fires and both up till 2:00am Friday and Saturday nights. It’s a very small site so it is not as if you get away from the groups – two thirds of the tents were the groups. Ear-plugs were essential. Because of this we will avoid in the future.
