Excellent rural location within easy 35 minutes drive from Calais/Dunkirk. English owner and welcoming French partner operating a strict 8am to 10pm barrier entry. Restaurant and bar on site, children's play area, popular swimming pool, small fishing lake, free wi-fi, baguettes etc can be ordered previous day. Dog friendly with lots of local footpaths and small village with one local restaurant. Vet in a village about 15 minutes away for required dog treatment at 28 Euros for a 2 minute check and a pill! Best pitches are nos 23 to 29 which are large, hedged and with electric, water and chemical disposal but a bit expensive at 23 Euros per night. We would have stayed longer than 2 nights as a quiet base for exploring the WW1 battlefield sites, the attractive hill top village of Cassell and the locality BUT oh dear, the three unisex toilets and two very basic showers are a real disappointment. Not very hygienic, in poor condition and inadequate for the number of pitches. If the owners dug into their pockets and provided modern hygienic facilities, this would tempt visitors to stay longer and more frequently and justify the price and rating.

We have used La Chaumiere on quite a number of occasions. Its proximity to Calais and the fact that it is very dog friendly even to the point they will book the vet appointment prior to returning to the UK. We last stopped there in September 2011 for our outward trip and also for our return.
We have always found both Guy and Bernadette very friendly and helpful.
We are due to arrive there tomorrow and plan to stay for a couple of nights before touring. While there we will book our return stay and vet visit for late September.
My only small criticism of the very well kept site is the toilet/shower block could be little on the small size if the camp site is busy. However this wasn't a problem during our visit.
Would definitely recommend site.
For anybody who found Guy a little bit gruff I suggest you talk to him about dogs or rugby.

We have stayed at this site 3 times and hope to stay many more times. Guy and Bernadette are wonderful hosts, nothing too much trouble.
On our last visit the owner was in hospital, hope he is OK now. Even though he was in hospital the service and care given was excellent.
Enjoyed 2 lovely, well cooked meals in the restaurant and swimming in the beautiful pool. The pitches are of a good size and hedged with water and electric to each pitch.
Can't wait for my next visit.

Very nice little site which is ideally placed for stop over to and from Europe. Owned by a lovely couple who make you feel very welcome and are very helpful. There were a number of visitors there for a week or more but there was not enough on site for us to do that. It is a good base to look around the northern France area, and the hospitality is perfect, but we need a bit more going on to keep us occupied.

First of all I can't understand any of the negative comments regarding Guy, he's a large bear of a man and in my opinion a very friendly host. He and his wife Bernadette run what in my opinion is a lovely campsite about 30 minutes drive from the port of Calais.
We booked a 3-night stay based on a recommendation of a friend of a friend who has used it on many occasions. When we contacted Guy and Bernadette to make the booking we also asked if they could arrange an appointment with the local vet for our dog (Holly) to have her tapeworm treatment prior to travelling back to UK.
On arrival at the site we interrupted their lunch but as is normal with good hosts they left their meal and dealt with our booking in. We were also given a sheet of paper with details of our appointment with the vet nearby for the next morning.
The pitches are well screened, each pitch shares water and electricity with the adjacent pitch (one electric point and water tap per pitch) and has the bonus of hard-standing to park the unit. The lawn area is well maintained and level so no problems with getting bogged down.
We were visited on a couple of occasions by one of Guy and Bernadettes dogs a lovely great friendly brute of a thing that our Jack Russell eventually took to after much growling (our dog not theirs doing the growling)
All I can say to those leaving negative comments regarding Guy is 'get real' he and his wife are wonderful hosts and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone either landing or getting ready to leave France.

About ten years ago I was driving along in the rain searching for a campsite at St Omer. With the heavy rain and darkening skies we could not find it. So I kept driving. After about half an hour we saw a campsite sign and we followed it. It took us on a twisty route through an old village and eventually we found this site. We approached a large man called Guy (the owner) and asked if we could stay the night. He said yes and we signed in. We also discovered that as it was the weekend his wife Bernadette was cooking. As it was cold and damp we decided that we would splash out and eat in their restaurant. We had a jolly time and we met an English couple there with two collie dogs which my young daughters made a great fuss of. This was our last night in France and it was a nice memory to take home with us. Anyway we decided to make this our last stop every year as it was close to Dunkirk.
We have since stayed there for the last 10 years and have always enjoyed it. Guy can put some people off as he is very particular about using hardstandings etc, but this is no big deal. Don't let it bother you. His wife is one of the funniest people I have met and a complete contrast to him.
Well we decided to pop over to France and Belgium for a long weekend at Easter this year. We stayed here again for our first and last nights. On the first night we met up again with the English couple who had just arrived again with their collies. (We have seen them every summer and they have watched my kids grow up into women. ) We had an hilarious evening and a jolly time eating in their restaurant again. As it was Easter Bernadette was also cooking on Easter Monday so we made sure we eat there again. We had a superb time here yet again. Thoroughly recommended. We will be back there again in the Summer.

We have stayed on this site several times. I cannot understand the negative comments I have read. Guy & Bernadette are great hosts with a clean well run campsite. I have heard many stories of their kindness to people and their pets! We have made many friends here and will return again.
Guy has a good sense of humour and would probably be the first to admit he can get a bit 'excited' about certain things (trips & 6A springs to mind!) but its all part of the charm! He sees all amd misses nothing (quote). Keep up the good work - we will visit again during 2012.

This site appears to be mainly for people who are coming and going to le tunnel. The site itself was okay, clean, pitches were good size, nice pool and restaurant etc. Surrounding areas were quite quiet with few shops and found it a little remote. Some good dog walks close to the site though.
The main problem of our 3 day stay was the owner. Some other reviews have used words such as gruff, abrupt even shy to describe him. I thought he was just plain rude and ignorant. I got the feeling he just couldn't be bothered with us, ie baley even looking up to talk to us. When putting the motorhome on pitch we must have touched the grass. Oh my god not the grass! 'no no no' he shouted ' not ze grass!' he nearly popped a vein in his forehead. Us and 3 other couples with dogs used the vets he recommended st omer. All had to return due to mistake made on passports. So double check. A couple in a camper opposite had a tunnel booked a few hours after they were due to check out. They asked if they could stay a extra hour. He kicked them off anyway we found them killing time in a layby near the site. We had crossing booked at 6. 30 'no no no he shouted, you cannot leave that early you will disturb the guests, you must stay in the car park for your last night'! the site was barley a quarter full. He also done this to other people leaving early. However this bares to no relevance to his very polite wife and docile dog, who were both very pleasant. We will be giving this site a wide berth.

We have used this site for last two years as a stop over on the way over to France and the way home. Have no complaints at all. Will use again this year. Regarding the comments about Guy, he is a wee bit gruff but was very helpful and remembered us from the year before. Bernadette was lovely, great with the kids. The campsite is very well equipped, we used the pool and restaurant, food was lovely and reasonably price, catered for kids with no issues and walked into the village. Would recommend this site, particularly for dog owners.

This campsite was unexpectedly enjoyable. We were rather dubious, having read the reviews after having booked. We used the site because it is such a short drive from Dunkirk. We were in a tent this time but we were also checking to see if it was suitable for our caravan. The site is very pleasantly laid out. It is well tended, with lots of flowers and the pitches are lovely. Each individual pitch is surrounded by tall hedges so you get a real feeling of privacy. Each pitch also has its own electricity, water supply and waste drainage and rubbish bin so if you are using a caravan it would be like a fully serviced pitch. Even in a tent this is very handy. The downside is that there are only two showers on the site but since this is a small site this is probably not such a problem. One of the showers is designed for disabled access. There is a washing up area and a laundry room too. The bar is large, very friendly and welcoming to children (and dogs). Bernadette - one of the owners, cooks in the evening and the food is very good indeed and very reasonably priced. There is free wifi in the bar. You can get bread if you order the day before, and also buy eggs, milk and jam. I think that the rather abrupt initial approach of Guy, that has been commented on, s can be misunderstood and is due to a language barrier and a little shyness. He does speak English and proves to be very amiable upon aquaintance- and he is works continuously to keep the site clean and tidy. We met people who loved the site and the owners, and keep coming back year after year. One couple (in a caravan) stay for several weeks every year. On the site there is a nice (and clean) swimming pool and paddling pool, trampoline and playground, a small fishing lake and a small archery range. The village is a very short walk away but has no shop at all, and only two bar/ restaurants ( both closed when we visited) so you would have to drive to get supplies. My feeling is that if you are in a caravan or motor home, with your own facilities, you would be very happy indeed. We enjoyed our stay under canvas. The access to the site is good and it is only a short distance to the ferry. We will be going there again.
