Just got back from Le Capeyrou. A superb campsite which we found through earlier good reviews on Ukcampsite so I thought it only right that I write my own review which may hopefully help other fellow campers.

The site is spacious and the pitches are very generous divided by hedges. The staff are helpful and all speak good English. The toilet/shower blocks are unisex which is a first for us and my wife thought might seem a bit weird but actually it works well, they are modern and are kept clean. The pool is great, a good size, very clean and new looking with lots of sun loungers but not so many parasols. There is a bar to socialise in the evenings and although they don't do their own food they do have a variety of outside food vendors there on selected nights. Just outside the site is a small supermarket, a bakery & a butchers.

The location and the view are stunning. The site is literally on the banks of the Dordogne and in the shadow of the beautiful and imposing Chateau de Beynac high above you.

The steep climb to visit the Chateau is worth the walk.

The site is an ideal base to visit other places in the areas, Sarlat 10km away with its market on a Wednesday is especially good.

It was our first stay at Le Capeyrou but it won't be the last.

We chose this site thanks to the reviews from fellow members and how accurate they are!

Our journey began from Le Havre arriving on time at 0830 on 21st May after an overnight crossing from Portsmouth – brilliant! We had to wait for friends on the other side of passport control (opportunity for our dogs to do their business) and began our road trip at 09:30 proper. Having taken the advice of fellow campers, we subscribed to the ATMB offer for a free toll Tab and approached our first “t” gate with trepidation…. Eh Voilà! Bleep! and up the barrier went (this was going to speed things up, significantly). Our friends Tab didn’t work at first but repositioning on the windscreen (important) did the trick. Our mostly motorway journey took us west of Paris through Orlean on to Limoges where shortly after, the trusted satnav instructed us to take a right for “Salat”; time now was approaching 1800 and this was the part of the journey that was going to be a little slow. The road is winding but excellent and we passed through some beautiful villages climbing up in to the hills with spectacular scenery. Our decent brought us to Salat; Beynac 11km.

As we turned a sweeping right hand bend, we could see the most beautiful Château high up on a rocky faced cliff top which was spectacular; Le Capeyrou signpost leered up – made it (time 19:07) 9. 5 hours and 434 miles later (including a total of 2 hours for breaks).

Parking up, we popped in to reception and were greeted by Benjamin; a handsome fellow (according to my wife) with a beaming smile and a warm welcome. Ben gave us a plan of the site and pointed us in the direction of pitch numbers 12 and 13 – exactly what we had asked for when we booked on 4th January – perfectly sited overlooking the Dordogne which is approximately, 5 meters from the campsites boundary fence. We offered to settle our bill but Ben insisted that we should concentrate on setting up and come and see them on Monday as there was a thunderstorm due later that evening (yikes!). Everywhere we looked; the entrance, reception, pitches, roads even the trees are immaculate but the view up to the château was truly beautiful.

Having completed our pitch on pretty good time, some exploring was due. Firstly, the pitches are very good and all are serviced. Not a complaint, merely an observation but our pitches were wide and not so deep. Deep enough to park our trailer sideways and our 4x4 in front but we pitched the Biscaya and our friends Esvo width ways as neither would have fitted from the front of the pitch to the back without some overhang on to the road/path of the campsite. Our pitches were separated by three small bushes which our camp table straddled creating a a nice dining area with a DD tarp over the top – perfect! We noted that some of the hook-ups were a little further than usual but we learnt later that this was being corrected in the near future. Water is available to every pitch and all are level. Some of the pitches along the Dordogne boundary have high hedges between pitches and along the boundary fence so you will have limited views and this end is also west facing so you will get the later sun which could be a problem in the height of the summer. Our nearest ablutions block had only recently been added with a lovely laundry and kitchen washing up area along with a disabled toilet/shower. Stairs rise to the first floor where the facilities are shared but with ample privacy; lots of WC and shower cubicles (lack of hooks but this was missed by the builders and was being seen to) with a large cubicle that included a wash basin). What amazed us is there are no push button showers! Yeap…free flowing warm/hot showers! The older block to the right of the entrance does have push button showers but they are more powerful. The reception leads to a lovely, large bar with plenty of seating which overlooks the terrace area which has an abundance of seating too. The pool (infinity) has some strict (common sense rules); shoes must be removed before entering and use the foot bath. The actual pool (heated) is wonderful with a children’s pool (heated) too which is equally lovely. Plenty of sunbeds although I suspect they would be in short supply if the site was maxed out. Eurocamp have a dozen or so safari tents but single sex groups are not permitted; it really is aimed at adults and families. Le Capeyrou has its own gate access to the path that runs parallel to the Dordogne; right and you are in the village centre in 10 minutes; left and you will reach the “beach” in five. The river was flowing very fast and we saw very little activity but we ventured out in our own inflatable canoes and did a trip down to Le Garrit, a campsite about 11km from our site; breathtakingly beautiful and so peaceful. Took about 1. 5 hours (very little paddling – river did most of the work!)

Opposite the site is a Boulangerie, butcher and general shop which are all lovely, especially the Boulangerie; bread, croissant, pan au chocolate and cakes to die for. Make sure you put in a standing order, they sell out fast. 11km to the east lies Salat with plenty of supermarkets and the town (medieval) is beautiful; large market on Saturday’s. To the west through Beynac lies Saint Cyprien, a small town with a Carrefour supermarket and petrol station (this is the cheapest at about 1. 14 euros for diesel a litre). Maria, one of the owners was wonderful and sorted out our trip to the vet for our boy’s worm tablets; 25 euros each, bargain!

Beynac is a stunning village with a good choice of restaurants and we had a wonderful dinner at Le Petite Tonnelle and very nice lunch at Hotel du Château. There are some good choices around the actual château but most were closed and are perhaps, more seasonal. Incidentally, the walk to the château is worth the effort (you can drive if you want to and there is free parking at the top) and the views to Castelenaud (the English castle) and across the Dordogne are fab. Castelenaud is well worth the 8-euro entrance and will leave you grinning when you find out the history!

We took a trip to Bergerac (OK I guess – didn’t see much other than the wine museum interesting – bought a poster) about 1 hours’ drive mainly to visit Monbazzic and the vineyards (desert wines – our favourite) to stock up…. Stunning and well worth the trip.

In addition, we visited Monpazier which was beautiful with some great restaurants; Le Criquant was our choice in Rue Saint-Jacques, lovely.

Whilst we had booked for 12 nights, our trip was cut short due to industrial action by dock workers and we returned a couple of days earlier on a different ferry from Cherbourg to Poole. The weather? Well, you have probably seen on TV and read about some of the worst rain in 30 years to hit France and we did not escape it either! 8 days of rain, intermittently and first but then, non-stop for the last couple of days which was a shame. Don’t get me wrong, we would not hesitate to return to this site and the location to continue exploring just perhaps in late June or early September!

PS. Amazing thunderstorms and take a tarp if you are tenters, helps if you have to pack up in heavy rain!

We arrived on Sunday 6th September, check in was great, staff very friendly. Site looked tidy and quite busy. We'd prebooked a river side pitch which we were allocated, however the complete lack of grass was a bit of a disappointment but I guess a busy summer and months of groundsheets! We pitched and got the awning up etc. Shower and toilet facilities were clean although the showers could have been a bit warmer. We didn't use the pool but it looked good. Benyac is beautiful and has a good range of restaurants and small shops, some of the restaurants were closed on Monday so check ahead.

All was good but a bit dusty until the thunderstorm came. And the constant rain for 3 days. Dusty mud + rain = mudbath.

The wifi around the bar area was shockingly useless! The bar was good although €6. 80 for a beer quite pricey.

The sites position was lovely however I wouldn't go back in mid to late September as a lot closes down very quickly,

We love this campsite. We've been 3 times out of the last 4 years, no doubt we'll be back in the future after visiting another area of the country!

The site has many many positives.

Flat-clean-friendly-great pool-hot showers-good facilities- great size pitches - parking on pitch next to tent

It is right on the river Dordogne and you can swim in it. Huge, wide but very slow moving, with a 'beachy bit' for you to sunbathe on. Pebbly river but very clean.

Nationalitywise, I'd say its 1/4 french, 1/4 english, 1/4 dutch and the rest german /belgian/ spanish/ italian. All the kids make friends easily and there's areas for badminton, table tennis, volleyball, football. Kids are free to cycle all over.

The owners (thomas, french and Marja, dutch) speak all languages and all really helpful and friendly.

It stays light until sunset (approx 10pm in august) as the sun doesn't disappear behind any hills or anything.

Its situated on an old orchard and each pitch is separated by trees/bushes and they provide great cover from the heat.

Closest big town is sarlat which is about 6 miles away, though there are facilities across the road incl a small supermarket, bakery & deli. Also the site has a bar.

If there is one downside, I could only say the winding roads. From the motorway at souillac to the campsite takes about 45-60 mins (that's the only bad thing I could think of!)

Such a lovely site ! The view is truly wonderful. The site is green and leafy, huge pitches and well kept. The owners are friendly and quick to sort out any problems ( the dryer stopped working !) Toilets are kept very clean - there always seems to be someone cleaning them. Pool is lovely, could do with more umbrellas for shade. Shops over the road are great, good butcher and patisserie. Food take away vans visit most nights, we only tried one - fine. Local restaurants are good and a few to choose from. There is a playing field with football goals and a small park area. All in all, a great site.

An absolutely fantastic site in a prime location, as all the other reviews say - spotlessly clean, spacious pitches, fantastic pool with views of the castle while sunbathing & very convenient for lots of attractions, Domme market on Thursday morning, The Marqueyssac Gardens, hire a canoe to paddle down the Dordogne - all are a must! Highly reccommended book with confidence you will not be dissapointed.

This was our second year on this site and it is really is perfect for us.

With mum and dad and three kids (7, 5 and 3) the site has just enough facilities (play area, table tennis and pool) to keep us all occupied and is within easy reach of some amazing attractions - we love the caves and castles! The river is a stones throw away from the site where you can hire kayaks etc. You can also bring your own boat and get straight onto the river.

With the small shop, bakery and butcher just over the road you could stay on site forever if you liked. The small town is a short walk away along a narrow pavement of a busy road - the shops are touristy but have extras like swimming costumes etc for those that leave theirs at home!

The toilet/showers are immaculate and the bar serves some decent beer and there was some good folky music on one night. I would avoid the takeaway van in future - long wait for food, expensive and not overly hygienic.

Although busy the site is relaxed with a good mix of french, Dutch and British visitors. My only slight criticism is that there could be a few more parasols around the pool as when the sun shines it can be very strong.

We have been to a lot of sites in France and this is the one we return to every year as our 'switch off' before moving on to explore different areas of France. Thoroughly recommended.

This site really ticks all the boxes, whoever you are!(we are a retired couple). Such easy access straight from the main road. Lovely big pitches, lots of choice regarding sun or shade, or both, riverside pitches available. Shops just outside the main entrance supplying most things you would require, including bread and fresh meat and groceries / green groceries and the all important wine, water and english papers! A spectacular position on river Dordogne, right underneath the clifftop chateau and village of Baynac, and a few hundred yards away, canoes available for some fun on the water. Toilets/showers/wash-up facilities are excellent and spotlessly clean. Even when very busy, (on DDay weekend also a public hol in the area) you never felt overpowered by the numbers on site. Never any waiting for loos or showers.

It did seem like everyone had a dog or two, and we don't! The swimming pool was really big(with child's paddler close by) and immaculately well kept with plenty of sunloungers. The grass and borders/hedges were beautifully maintained. Owners were always pleasant and accommodating whenever we approached them.

Just one small gripe, which isn't the fault of the site, but each evening a local tearaway on a baffless m'bike, roared up and down the outside road underneath the cliffside, the reverberating noise was very loud. Altogether one of the best sites we have ever been to.

Couple (48 & 50) - look for peace, quiet and tranquillity, but with a few mod cons).

Arrived Sun 8/9, departed Mon 23/9 = 15nights

First time camping in France, and after some encouraging reports from the reviews and recent UKCS posts/pics, we had no fear that we were doing wrong, or doing it in the wrong place. And we were right! Right to try camping in France. Right to head for The Dordogne. And right to stay here at Le Capeyrou!

The site is a little larger than we normally go for back home, but as we wanted easy access to a shop and somewhere to eat, we struggled to find a nice little farm site, so took the risk! It wasn’t worthy of any concern. As it was September, the site was, at most, 75% occupied when we arrived, and probably a tad less than 50% occupied for the second half of our stay.

We took the gamble (as advised on UKCS) to not book in advance, and after a day and a half travelling from the Midlands, via the tunnel, we arrived on site at what some would say is the perfect time. 14:30. Reception had re-opened after lunch, and no “tea time rush” of arrivals. Immediately, we were made to feel welcome. The owners speak perfect English, and are more than polite, pleasant, yet professional. We were encouraged to stroll around the site, and choose from any available pitch we took fancy to. A map was given to us, with occupied pitches (and a couple of reserved ones) crossed off, for our reference. We chose large, sunny, and exposed! End of the row, looking out to an open grassed area, used in part for the volleyball nets, and in the main, a dog walking area. Very open, very quiet. And with the opportunity to spread just a tad outside of the recognised pitch boundary!

To be fair, the pitch seemed to be one of the largest, and measured approx 10/11m by 6/7m. But it seemed ok to protrude a little, as it wasn’t encroaching on another pitch. So largish, but not massive. The car went to the side of the pitch, beyond the hedged boundary, which was basically the grassed access road, which in itself, was more than wide enough to accommodate parked cars.

Previous reviews have covered everything loo block related. Mixed gender, clean, ample showers, basins, WC’s, no queues, paper provided, lockable doors, constant hot water etc.

We used the older of the two blocks (as it was nearest) and this was more than good enough. The block nearest the site entrance seemed a little more modern, obviously newer, but may (I’m guessing) be busier, as that end of the site seemed more popular. (We didn’t have a clear view of the castle from our pitch, the “popular” end did! That may have something to do with it!) Same standards were kept in the wash up block (decent drainers and shelving), and there was a washing machine (or two?) and ironing board available too.

The one thing they didn’t have, was the use of a freezer for tenter’s to re-freeze ice packs. They do, however, sell frozen bottles of water at reception. Along with a couple of bags of ice cubes from the supermarket, this process kept our (non-electric) cool box at a perfect temp throughout our stay. Maybe consider hiring one of their fridges during peak season?

We opted for the 6amp electric, as we don’t overdo it (No electric cooking/TV’s etc), and there was no sign of “tripping”. 10 amp is available, for the busier families.

The weather here, at this time of year, was warm enough for shorts, but a fair bit of cloud, and short light showers were not unheard of. Not sunbathing weather on the whole (although the last 3 days picked up enough for us to use/lounge around the pool, and top up our tans. Again quiet, spotlessly clean, well looked after, with ample sunbeds, and an excellent place to relax.

The bar area was quiet, and if you wanted serving, more often than not, you had to poke your head into reception. As they are adjoining, that is, of course, no problem.

WI-FI was a little weak, and best served in or around the bar area (seats and tables outside too, of course)

Beynac itself was picturesque, quaint, and downright beautiful!

Perfect in the daytime, but with only one bar and a couple of restaurants, it was probably a tad small/quiet in the evening to be perfect for us. (We do a fair bit of eating out). However, not only did we survive, we could probably get used to it, too!

There are a few hills out and about, but if you have room for cycles, take them! There are flat rides available, if you do your homework, and some of the scenery took our breath away! We only cycle for leisure, never breaking sweat, and we had the time of our lives. Country lanes as far as the eye can see, riverside paths, and off-road (tarmac) cycle paths are all available. Some direct from site, some need a short trip by car before you start. All are perfect!

You know all about the river, and the castles, and the châteaux. You don’t need me to tell you just how wonderful this area is!

On the negative side. And I admit, I’m struggling here, so I’ll be over zealous, if I may.

The grass, particularly on the pitches themselves, was a little threadbare. Remember though, we are talking September, after a busy summer, on a popular site, and record temps, I believe! Where there was grass, there were a million tiny soil mounds, which I presume are worms, although we never actually saw any worms! And finally, we had a mole doing what moles do, under our tent, and in our canopy. No damage to the tent/SIG/Footprint, and it certainly didn’t affect our enjoyment one bit. I suspect all of these negatives are season related. Common sense tells me that the grass would (should?) be lush at the start of the season, and I’ve been informed we were prime time for mole activity!

No real evidence of bugs, creepy crawlies, ants, dragonflies, mozzies or such like, (remember, we are riverside!) so that was a relief!

Oh, and if you think you can hear buzzing. Look up. It’ll be the blowers on the hot air balloons! Very popular in these parts, it seems!

Wonderful site, wonderful area, and the only reason we won’t be going straight back, is that we don’t want to get in a rut, and want our second visit to France to be “somewhere else”.

Very, very tempting though, to play safe, and just go back here. We’d have no problem in doing so! I'm certain we will, at some stage.
