We stayed at this site last year and have been meaning to leave a review ever since but have only recently just remembered our username and login details!
The site itself is beautiful and very well kept. Cars are not allowed on the field and visitors are encouraged to use the wheelbarrows provided to ferry your gear from the car to the pitch, this is not a problem at all as it is only a short distance, in fact it adds to the whole 'traditional' feel. The toilets are by far the cleanest we have ever seen at a family run site, the owners do a fantastic job at keeping on top of things. The block itself is very well equipped and the water heat and pressure is very good. The owners are very friendly and at the time we stayed camp-fires were allowed (obviously I'm unsure if this is still the case?)They were very reasonably charged and were delivered direct to your tent which was a nice touch!
All in all this is a fantastic site, a true gem and we will be returning again at some point this year.

What a beautiful site! The owners are flexible and allow campers to arrive after hours then pay in the morning. You'll need a car to get to the site, as it's a ways out of the nearest town.
The shower and toilet facilities are pristine and modern and located near the pitches. There is also a sitting area inside with brochures of local attractions. The water is spring water, and so the taps in the shower block cannot be drunk from, but there is a pumphouse with a filtered water tap as well as a fridge for campers to use.
The field for pitches is lovely and flat, and we fell asleep to the babbling of the Usk River, and woke to that as well as the sounds of the farm's sheep and chickens. The owners offer fresh eggs and produce for purchase as well as jams and other canned goods.
It's a delightful location for tent camping (no caravans) with good parking, wheelbarrows to cart belongings from parking to the pitch field, and is just well set up all around. We were so refreshed by our stay at Ynysfaen.

Just back from a lovely couple of nights at Ynysfaen.
We arrived on a particularly wet Friday evening (it was the weekend of the Wimbledon final with about 100 flood warnings across the country) having called ahead and been reassured we wouldn't be camping in a lake!
Parked up on a decent gravel car park, checked in, were handed the (entirely reasonable) rules of the site and pointed in the direction of the field. This is a very short walk from the car park and past the excellent shower block. There are barrows to help you move equipment to the field. Don't let the walk deter you from this site.
The field itself is next to the river Usk, but the river is in a little cutting and I believe the flow is controlled by a reservoir so my fears of floating away in the night were unfounded. The grass was mown the day before and in excellent condition. The ground was level, and though a little squelchy under foot (it had been raining all day) there were no puddles and it drained and dried out very nicely over the weekend. There's a little rill around the edge of the field to assist drainage and it seemed to work well.
The setting is beautiful and perfect for camping, with trees on three sides to keep you sheltered. When the sun comes out the site becomes a bit of a sun trap, so you may want something for shade when the tent gets too warm.
The facilities were spot on. Three toilets, two sinks and three showers, all immaculate and cleaned at least once a day, possibly more. The showers were lovely and warm with plenty of hooks on the wall and good space for changing in the individual shower rooms. You need to be sensible with water because it's all spring fed. There are books and walking guides in the shower block; it felt like the owners cared and wanted you to enjoy your stay.
There is a decent covered washing up area and a fridge/freezer in the pump house for milk etc and freezer blocks. There's only the one fridge, so it's just for perishables and not drinks (use your freezer blocks and cool bag).
We didn't make use of the fire baskets, but another family did and it looked inviting. There are also large logs dotted around the edge of the field to place BBQs on. You can buy half a dozen free range eggs for £1. 50 (I think) from the owners.
The site is tucked away so the only road noise is an occasional car or tractor on the country lane. We ate in the Castle Coaching Inn on the first night (we drove as it's a 1. 5-2 mile walk) and the food was nice and reasonably priced (plus the heating was on which was useful to dry us out).
All in all, a delightful site, with all the facilities you need for a good price.

It’s true what they say, the campsite is beautiful.
We are Camping Club members, but wanted something a little less ‘main stream tourist’, so we went for rural and found Ynysfaen on the web.
A nice spring running through it, and the Usk too. Peace and quiet.
We had booked in for 12 nights, looking forward to a nice relaxing few days with a few walks in between. As it was said to be a decent base for walks (It is, but 95% of the main walks you have to drive to and park up. )
We found a great butcher too, the Welsh Venison Centre, about 20 miles out towards Brecon, we bought enough for the next week, Steaks, Venison, Sausages, loads…
First night was great, clear night sky, cocoa in our hands, and bats flying around our fire…
Then began the rain, the almost constant rain…
Being avid campers, we don’t care if it rains or not, our tent is a 5000 H+, and can handle it, or so we thought.
After the 4th night we had to call it a day. The tent had unfortunately lost its waterproofing, for reasons we are still investigating, along with the manufacturer.
We started to pack, and tried to find the lady owner. We caught her whilst she was doing the morning chores and explained the situation and regret to be leaving.
As we had paid in full expecting to stay the duration (£380. 00) we asked for a refund for the remaining nights, and we would gladly pay for the current night too for the trouble of leaving early. The refund we were expecting was roughly £220. Enough for us to maybe enjoy most of what was left, in a Caravan or a B&B.
We didn’t expect the reply that followed…
We were offered a 50% refund on the remaining nights, to which we only received £100, as that is what she had to hand
That works out at about £70 a night for 4 people.
We feel we have paid for everyone who had cancelled on them.
We did ask if she had any terms and conditions of Camping@Ynysfaen we could view, but this, as far as I could tell, was ignored.
We didn’t have to pay up front, we could have paid per day/at the end. But being respectable to others and their businesses, we paid in full.
That was the end of our holiday, as we now had no real money to continue elsewhere.
Our advice:-
Yes it’s a nice little site, clean facilities.
The fire pits are a great addition to any evening
Don’t offer to pay up front, thinking you are helping a local business.
There are no T&C’s as far as we could find, so its ‘Campers beware’.
Watch the weather closely, closer than what you are being told by anyone on site.
The surrounding farmers may wake you up at 6/7am, not the chickens or the Usk.
Give your tent a thorough check before setting off on your holidays.
If you are a Camping Club member, go to a club site, at least they will honour your money in one way or another.

If you're planning on walking in the Brecon Beacons, this is an absolutely perfect place to camp. From here you can walk or drive to most of the best walking areas, and on coming back tired and muddy, you won't have to deal with an over-packed, heaving campsite full of badly behaved dogs.
When we went, we were the only tent on the field, which was absolutely lovely, as we got to pitch a not-too-long walk from the toilets and shower blocks! But even with more tents, we'd have probably felt quite peaceful and isolated.
The campsite is on a riverbank, so it can get waterlogged in heavy rain, so make sure your tent has no leaks. The toilets and shower blocks are practically luxurious, with books available from the shower area if the weather is poor enough to keep you in your tent. No caravans and no cars allowed on the field adds to the sense of peace. I suspect younger children would find it quite boring, so not a place for very little ones.

This was our second stay at the site.
Set in the Brecon beacons this easily accessible site is peaceful with the only noise being birdsong, sheep and chickens.
No Cars allowed on pitch, but barrows to move your gear.
Flat, grass pitches.
Immaculate shower block, 3 toilets 3 showers (unisex) with hot water. The showers are free.
There is a covered pot wash area with hot water.
There are no fires allowed but fire pits are free with bags of logs and kindling at a reasonable price, delivered to your pitch.
The owners are very welcoming.

Such a lovely campsite, very quiet and peaceful, never overcrowded, clean and tidy. We'd rather forego facilities in order to get a laid back quiet place, but this one had it all. Fridge/freezer, drinking water, immaculate shower/toilet blocks! Even a daily BBC weather report pinned to the shower block wall
The fire buckets and firewood were a bonus!
Set in a tranquil valley, nice and sheltered, river running right next door.
Just the sort of place we like. Perfect for exploring the Brecon beacons. We'd gladly return.

A delightful location, in a very quiet valley - the only sounds are the nearby river and stream, birds - with a regular Kite or Kites flying overhead.
No vehicles are allowed on site (so you use wheelbarrows or the owner tows your trailer to your pitch with her quad) - this makes it so safe for children. Also, with plenty of room (since the owners are limited by how many people they can have on site) there is loads of room for children to play - or just sit by your tent without someone crammed up next to you.
Toilets very clean. They use their own spring water, so once it ran short - but that was unique - and probably children wasting it in the shower.
Absolutely fantastic site. About 25 minutes from Brecon, but a traffic free road, and a pleasure to drive, and near places like Ystradfelte for the waterfalls.
Had such a relaxing time here - with owners who would help in any way they could.
Then, the bonus of being able to have a fire next to your tent at night, they can provide logs and kindling ad the fire pit. One of the best campsites ever. Just don't tell everyone!

Superb! Owners were very helpful and happy to chat. Site mostly flat, though was a bit windy while we were there, but hey you're in a valley in Wales.
Toilet block kept clean and plenty of hot water in the free shower. Weather forecast was very useful as there is absolutely no phone signal on site. O
wners restrict the number on site so you don't feel like you are surrounded by anything other then grass. Well worth the trip and will def come back.
Good number of walks about and it's just a short drive into Brecon to see the cathedral and stuff. Lovely cafe at the bottom of the hill as well.
One thing I will say though is that your sat nav may take you about 500 yards beyond the entrance, so keep your eyes open.

This was a fantastic site. If you love peace and quiet and being close to nature then this is the site for you. I loved the fact no cars are allowed on site, and the children loved looking in the pond at newts and following the chickens around.
The toilets and showers were very clean (and free) and the weather forecast and book swap was a nice touch. Being able to have the use of a fire pit made the trip even more special. I just wish more camp sites were like this.
The surrounding area is very beautiful and is ideal if you like walking or mountain biking. Red kites flew over the site while we were there. Brecon is about 20-30 mins away and is well worth a visit.
The nearby Usk reservoir is also nice.
