What an amazing place to stay! We were able to camp overlooking the sea. We had lots of space around us so felt as though we were in our own personal campsite.
The views were breathtaking and there were plenty of walks nearby. Cawsand and kingsand were a short walk away and had shops for provisions and places to eat and were absolutely beautiful.
The site itself was laidback and relaxed. There were adequate shower and toilet facilities. It was an absolute treat to stay here and a must for anyone wanting a quiet and relaxing break

Maker is an absolutely stunning site, set high above the sea with amazing views. This is definitely the wilder side of camping - no hook ups, basic showers (take your 20ps!) and, best of all, a bonfire outside the tent at night.
We camped in the family field and picked a reasonably sheltered spot – as other reviewers have said, it gets windy perched at the top of the hills, so we pitched up quite close to the hedges that run round the edge of the field to give us a bit more shelter.
There is plenty of room and we had no problem finding a secluded spot in the height of the school summer holidays.
The site is very laid back and not for those who like an organised stay – there are no playgrounds or swimming pools, but our children could run around in plenty of space and loved building a bonfire at night. It's a 10-15 minute walk down to two lovely villages, where you will find a shop selling bread, milk, etc, plus sea front pubs that serve great meals.
And it's a similar drive to the stunning Whitesands Bay, with a huge, family friendly beach. Our children also enjoyed watching the huge naval ships come in and out of Plymouth harbour daily from our view perched on the hilltops.
The site itself has a little bar, the Random Arms, which opens on Fridays and Saturdays. It's great, really friendly and well worth a visit. And over in the huts there is a not-to-be-missed cafe. This seems to be open most days and does a fantastic breakfast, lunch, whatever you want. The guy who runs it cooks everything from scratch and could not be more accommodating - and his food is delicious!
Next to the Random Arms is the 'washing block' where there are washing up facilities and showers - all basic and, yes, random, but perfectly adequate. Take a plug - there are a few sinks for washing up, but only one plug when we visited! There are a few 'smarter' loos here, too, as well as compost ones dotted around the fields.
Downsides? Not many at all! I would say it's difficult to find out where anything is on the site or in the area, particularly when you arrive, as there are no signposts, or indeed many people about, but we found that by asking the artists and musicians who work in the main house's workshops, we found out where everything was. We almost missed the cafe, but again, someone told us about it and it is definitely worth a visit.
The only negative part of our stay was when we were keen to visit the Random Arms again after a great Friday night there, but found fences up and a huge private party instead for loads of teenagers, which carried noisily on until the very early hours.
It also says on its site that you can take wood from its huge woodpile, but they actually have bags of firewood for sale instead - fair enough, but at a fiver a bag, it can end up costing a bit over a week. We found plenty of firewood in the woods on the pathway down to the villages, though, so it wasn't a problem.
We left this site really relaxed and would love to return. It is well worth a visit – and probably has some of the most stunning views of any site in the UK.

Just got back from a great week at Maker. Weather was kind although before our visit wind had been strong and levelled a few tents.
Campsite is quite exposed in bad weather but glorious views in the sun. On site bar is great. Very quiet and welcoming (and was only open on the Friday and Saturday evening) with cosy decor.
Facilities are basic with only 4 showers for the whole site but are very clean and tidy and we never had to queue once during our visit. Cawsand village is a short walk away with great pubs and views across Plymouth sound. Even saw Hugh Dennis holidaying there. We would definitely be back.

We hadn't planned to stay at Maker Heights, but were directed to it by people in the pub at Millbrook. We wanted to be close to the Cremyll ferry to Plymouth as part of our cycle tour of Cornwall and Devon, and the other site we tried was full.
First impressions were a bit off putting as it has a rather run-down hippy commune feel, but as we encountered the laid back reception and saw how much space there is, as well as the stunning views, we were completely won over. Apart from a 10pm noise embargo, there were no obvious rules.
The loos are housed in a shipping container decorated with modern art, but are clean and modern. The showers (£1) and washing up sinks are in one of the old barracks buildings next to the bar which opens at weekends.
Nearer the gate is a complex of well-kept freshly-painted Nissan Huts where a cafe serves coffee and meals. This is a quirky, happy sort of a place, and we heard one little girl walking past our tent with her mum say: 'Mummy I wish we could live here always. '

I've just returned from a very pleasant stay in a yurt at Maker.
The site is basic as mentioned in other reviews but don't let this put you off, the views alone are worth it, the showers and flushing toilets are more than adequate and there are compost loos dotted around for those middle of the night visits.
The surrounding villages are great places to visit, and a drive round the cliff roads of Whitsands is a great experience, although the wife will disagree.
Although the weather was not the greatest it didn't detract from the experience in the slightest.
As mentioned by others this is not a run by numbers, pretty little rows campsite which is why we chose to go and are looking forward to going back.

The site had everything we need to enjoy a quiet few days away. The views were amazing, you can't imagine how beautiful it is until you're stood way up on the peninsula with the Plymouth sound and Plymouth over the estuary and view of coast and open ocean all around.
The staff and guests were very welcoming and friendly and there is a culture on the site that spreads to everyone, making it have a family feel.
We had a walk over to Mount Edgcombe cricket pitch to watch a tour game and stayed all day with them.
You must see this wonderful place to believe it. We will be back.

We arrived at the site (there is no formal Reception as such) and were shown by our hosts Linda and Pete to the most fabulous Yurt tucked away near, but well spaced from two others. It was well equipped with a wood burner and all the pots, pans, plates utensils you would expect.
The beds were a double and single mattress directly placed on the rugs that made up the floor of the Yurt. You provided your own bedding and pillows. Candles were there for lighting and there were a string of solar fairy lights that gave a subtle glow.
The interior was light, warm, spacious and welcoming, and very comfortable.
Most intriguing though was the large cooking pot outside next to the open fire outside of the Yurt. Upon which we quickly learned how to cook amazing food while watching the stars, and sipping wine. A big pile of wood and timber was located a hundred foot or so away and with the provided saw and axe had as much fire wood as we liked.
It did not take us long to get into the swing of simple living.
The view was stunning over Plymouth sound and Rame. There was lots of activity with ships coming and going. The sun came up directly in front of the Yurt, although it was very foggy one morning, and being so exposed the weather could be a big factor here.
Like other reviews say; It's not your normal run of the mill camping, although the toilets are excellent, don't expect to see a perfect row of white caravans parked next to hook-ups! Its more like Glastonbury feel to the camping. You're pretty much given a field and a expected to get on with it! Very informal and relaxing.
It was the most fabulous stay and the most enjoyable camping experience ever! Linda and Pete are wonderful people and very welcoming.
Definitely will go back here as its perfect for chilling out and dropping out of the rat race for a while.

Found this site to be very peaceful with superb views of the sea, the delightfull villages of kingsand and cawsand with their pubs, cafes and beaches etc are a 10 min walk downhill through a scenic footpath which could prove difficult for the less able and the elderly although there is a road that will take you down.
The facilities were very basic but more then adequate, the bar was open in the afternoon but seemed to be closed later on in the evening. The toilets could certainly do with some updating although the showers were clean and usable.
I would definitely visit the site again for a long weekend etc though I don't feel its the sort of site I could stay for a longer period of time.

We stayed here for 10 days in June 2011. What a fantistic camp site! We shared the field with only a handful of other campers who came and went.
Beautiful views with just a short walk to Kingsand and Cawsand and their 4 friendly pubs with great food and real ale. The people on site are equally friendly and the on site pub is a pleasant surprise (open Tues and Fri nights).
Situated on the coastal path there are some fantistic walks to enjoy. Compost loos are handy on site, with showers and normal toilets just a minute walk up the field.
The only downside was the lack of freezer for our ice packs. Having listened to our concern the owners installed a communal fridge just before we left - fantastic.
We will be back!

Stayed in one of the Yurts for 2 nights with the 2 kids and dog. We had a fantastic time. This is a wonderful site. Has a feel of 1969 Isle of White about it.
A really cool place, and the Yurt was superbly equipped and weatherproof. We cooked various healthy foods (bacon, sausages, fried bread etc) on the excellent little wood burner and had a roaring fire going outside.
With the beautiful Rame Head and Whitsand Bay nearby, the classically Cornish Kingsands and Cawsands coastal villages, Mount Edgecombe only a mile down the road and the Yurt overlooking the breakwater in Plymouth Sound, its got to be one of the most Idyllic settings anywhere. We are all looking forward to going back soon.
'If you like all being lined up in rows with power hook ups then sorry we are not for you'! this basically says it all!
