We have just returned from a 7 night stay at Highwood Camping in Dorset.
The campsite was organised so that there was plenty of space on the site. One field had tents in whilst another very large field was free for children to play in.
Having the owners of the site living under canvas and enjoying the same experience as their customers I believe provided a real personal touch. One of my children took very much to one of the owners and she was often heard chatting away to her!
The solar showers were not always hot - however they were always warm enough - and for us enhanced our 'camping' experience.
The composting toilets were certainly another new experience for us. However they were fine and we never had a problem with them.
In the evenings we were able to enjoy a log fire and toasted marshmallows in a fire pit that they hire out. This was one of the highlights of our holiday and something that rarely can be enjoyed on a camp site these days.
With only one sink for washing up sometimes you had to wait for your turn to use the facilities but this did not really cause much of a problem.
So to conclude, I would certainly recommend this site to people/families who enjoy a lovely spacious camp site with plenty of place to relax and play. (Not mentioning the lovely area that the campsite is located in). With the owners on site there is also that very personal touch.
We have stayed at approx 15 lovely campsites over the last 5 years and myself and my children rank Highwood as our number 1 campsite!

A very nice site. The site is not too big and they keep the number of campers at a reasonable level so we all had plenty of space. And space behind for children to play games and to walk dogs. Some of the other sites we saw in the area were squashed in a bit like a festival.
Both the owners who run the site were both very friendly and helpful.
The toilets were compost toilets, looked a bit like little sheds but clean and comfortable and not smelly at all.
The showers were solar powered and Tim advised us on arrival unless there is a lot of sun to use in the afternoon / evening. A much warmer shower could be guaranteed.
A covered washing up and washing sink, for brushing teeth or the morning shave, area was also available. All areas were tidy and clean and well looked after.
A great site and one we will be visiting again.

What an amazing time we had at highwood camping. We had hired the 5 metre furnished bell tent and was really surprised at how lovely it looked. The owners were truly lovely people and nothing was too much trouble even when we came back one evening and had been invaded by ants we all pulled together and completely moved the tent 10 metres in no time at all. We hired a fire pit and sat every evening looking up at the clear sky glittering with stars and saw quite a few shooting stars. The thunder box composting toilets were an experience but one we all got used to very quickly and even when the day had been hot they weren't smelly as I had expected. Showers were solar powered and were unpredictable had showers ranging from ice cold too really hot but it didn't matter to me. The site is set in a corner of a field and the rest was one giant playing field for the kids to run off steam. There is lots to do in the area wareham is bustling, corfe castle is impressive and monkey world is a must. The site is value for money and we will be going back next year. A fantastic holiday!

My mother, daughter and I stayed 2 nights at Highwood and booked their Bell tent which cost £30 per night. Had an amazing time and wish we could've stayed longer.
You are greeted by a friendly and helpful owner, Tim in his make shift reception which was his 'home'. He had bbq pits you could borrow as well as children's tennis rackets etc.
He showed us our Bell tent and we were surprised as to how nice it was and so glad we booked it.
The tent came with 1 double air bed and 2 singles. There were animal rugs, cushions, tables, solar lights, cutlery/kitchen utensils provided.
The showers and washing up facility is solar powered and the toilets are wooden huts with sawdust. The shower was amazingly hot (due to the sunshine!) and the toilets were quite smelly because of the weather!
The site was quite busy as the field actually seemed quite small but you had enough privacy.
The owners are very friendly. The day of our departure they had collected moths overnight and got all the campers over to identify the different moths together.
Although they have just opened, it is a lovely site and would love to go back next year. It is about 30 mins drive to Swanage and over an hour to Lyme Regis/Weymouth so plenty to do. Studland Beach is apparently the closest but we never went there.
Look forward to staying there again!

We stayed in our trailer tent for the weekend 10-12 August 2012 with our 2 small dogs. We were made very welcome by Tim and Ruth as soon as we arrived. We were able to choose our pitch in a lovely field scattered with daisies. All that was needed was a Cadbury Flake!
The facilities were very good, solar showers and composting toilets. We had not stayed at a campsite with these before, but the instructions were very clear and using them wasn't scary at all! There is a shelter over the wash basin and washing up sink for days when the weather is not so good.
The reception area had charcoal and eggs for sale and firepits/barbeques to borrow. Also a collection of bats and balls to play with in the adjacent field for those with lots of energy! The field was also equipped with goal posts and a net for badminton etc. We had a go at flying our kite there too.
The atmosphere on site was lovely, very friendly like minded campers. Owners chatted to everyone ensuring all had a good time.
We would give this site 10 out of 10 for its facilities and friendliness and we look forward to returning next year when the site opens again.

We are first time campers with 2 toodlers both under 4 years old. Being the first time camping we were worried and anxious as to what to expect, so chose this site as it was small, the thought of crowds the first time did not appeal.
On arrival to this site we were made to feel most welcome by the owners, and told any probs however silly we may think they are just ask, they had BBQ's to borrow, bats balls etc for the kids, a field behind the tent area for kids, and dogs to run free and play- brilliant.
A lovely peaceful spacious site- pitch where you want, everyone was friendly, my toodlers slept till 7am and its usually 5am at home. Peace!
Using the thunderboxes for the first time was an experience but no problem at all, always kept clean, the solar showers were fantastic. Washing up facilities brilliant.
A lot of people on this site had been there for 10 days so that says how good this site is.
Thankyou for a wonderful stay and we hope to return next year.

Dorset is a busy place during the summer and a lot of the campsites are rammed with tents and people, not our cup of tea! However this is a real gem of a site for those who like a real camping experience, but still with a family feel.
We loved our stay at this quiet and relaxed camp-site. The owners' aim appears to be to ensure that the site never becomes too crowded so that there is enough space for all. As a result there are no marked pitches and not too many rules and regulations.
If you don't fancy pitching your own tent there are bell tents to hire which looked lovely especially with their solar twinkly lights.
Children are welcome and there is a field separate from the camping area with goals for children to play in and balls and other games are provided by the owners.
The owners Tim and Ruth are very friendly and helpful and enjoy meeting new people. One morning Ruth opened a moth trap much to the excitement of both kids and adults - this was a nice extra and really interesting.
They also provide charcoal, eggs and firewood as well as helpful advice. Being able to have a bonfire was an added bonus.
We also enjoyed our first experience of solar showers and thunderboxes! Surprisingly, even during the hottest spell of the summer there was no smell and you quickly got used to using them. Fun for the kids too!
There is an area for washing up under a shade with hot water - our only complaint would be that the wooden unit was too low and hurt your back bending over to wash up.
It is well situated for visiting beaches and attractions and easy to get to. Wareham and Wool are nearby for stocking up on food. Places we would recommend - Blue Pool for a relaxing walk around the beautiful lake, Corfe Castle and the train ride to Swanage (however Swanage is heaving in the summer), the tank museum although this was a little pricey and Studland Bay and Lulworth later in the afternoon.
Definitely a site to recommend and one we will return to! Perfick!
