Great little site which offers friendliness, flexibility and no frills. Very much a back to basics approach with no hassles or aggravation.
Toilet facilities are basic there are no showers. No refuse facilities you have to take your rubbish home. Baldock Motorway services nearby offering fast food supermarket etc. No road noise evident from nearby A1(M)
I visit every year and frankly love its simplicity and the icing on the cake - its inexpensive.

A good find if you are looking for somewhere cheap to get your head down. Only cost £9 for one night. There is a toilet block with a washing up sink in the otilet block. The toilets are basic and there is no soap or hot water but they are ok.
You have cold water only to wash your hands and outside the toilets are a couple of taps for drinking water. No electric hook up and you have to take your own rubbish home. But if you are in a self sufficient unit then it won't bother you anyway. The important thing for us was to find somewhere safe to stay overnight off road.
On the negative side this was the first time we had stayed at a campsite that was not policed. By that I mean no warden or owners on site etc. That basically means that people can do what they want on the campsite. For example people peeing in the bushes rather than walking to the toilet, kids playing football until dark and again at 7. 30am and our motorhome got hit twice by the ball. Despite an 11. 00pm silence rule, people arrived at midnight and kept their engine running for 20 minutes and did the same at 7. 00am the next morning. People park where they want even if it feels uncomfortably close to you. Music being played at midnight etc. You get the idea.
To be honest it would have been quieter to have parked on the A1. It's important to know that this was a minority, 9 of the 12 campers on site were considerate, but there was enough going on to stop it from being a relaxed night and any other night you would have totally different people on site.
I would think twice about camping in an open field with no warden in future, but if you are looking for somewhere to park legally and cheap then this is an option.

We spent a weekend in the Orchard area and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were some friendly campers and it is amazing how quiet the site is when you consider how near it is to the A1.
We wanted to have a weekend camping but needed to stay near to home and this site really fitted the bill.
A basic camp site but the Orchard is a very pleasant setting.

Just had a fab one nighter here on the spur of the moment, I just wanted to take advantage of the lovely weather this weekend. I was in a campervan, just me, and a dog - the cost was £4 ! Bargain. I was given a very friendly welcome by the owner.
You can camp where you like, in one of two fields. I stayed in the Orchard area, which was really nice, lines of apple and pear trees, which at this time of year were all very heavy with fruit. Indeed, here's a tip, don't camp directly under a tree - fruit was falling readily (which kept me amused - every time an apple fell my dog would go rushing out to see what was happening)
There is a stream (which I guess is a offshoot of the River Ivel - see below) running through the site, This is ideal for kids to play in, and there were a few messing about in it, lovely. The dog enjoyed it too.
Facilities are basic but clean. There are mens and ladies toilets, and washing up sinks. No hot water, no showers, and no EHU. But if you don't want these facilities, as I didn't, that's fine. The loos were kept very clean, plenty of loo roll, and the buildings secured with a security code to type in. The washing up sink is within the same building. It's very dark at night, no lighting around the site, so take torches for those late night trips to the loo! One more tip - you need to take all your rubbish home with you, so be prepared!
The best thing for me is the location. Surrounded by miles of footpaths, you can wander for hours without going near a road. Perfect for dog owners. The footpath network is accessed directly from the site too, even better. The river Ivel goes through and around the site, and there are miles of paths alongside it and around the lovely Radwell Lake itself. Radwell village has a beautiful church which is worth a look, but not much else.
If you want shops or pubs, then you'll need to be prepared to walk a fair way (or drive of course!) There is a COOP and pubs in Stotfold, about a 20 minute walk across fields, or a garden centre with a restaurant about the same distance in the other direction, in Norton. I did a circular walk direct from the site, first to Horton, then back around to the village church, then over to Stotfold, and back to the site, about four miles, and at a very leisurely pace took me an hour and a half, all through fields and proper footpaths, and much of it alongside the small river. Lovely.
Fairly near to the site is a service station, which has shops, McDonalds, petrol etc. This is the Baldock services on the A1. It's a 5 minute drive, or apparently you can walk it in about 15 minutes, but I didn't try this time.
So the A1 - yes there is some noise from the road, but it didn't bother me at all, just white noise really, which faded into the background noise of the trees rustling etc. Apart from that the site was beautifully quite and peaceful.
This is a site I will most definitely return to, cheap, brilliant for walking and chilling out, and although basic facilities, for those who don't need or want them, then I would highly recommend it.

Stayed in the field area which is really lovely and flat and even grass. There are huge trees on one side which offer a good level of shelter.
You can camp wherever you like in this area which could have caused us a bit of a problem as we were a large group. Fortunately we were lucky to have managed to have found a large enough section for us all to set up camp together as this was a very - apparently unusually - busy weekend. It would've dampened everyone's spirits not to have been able to camp together, and annoying seeing as we'd pre-paid not thinking this could've happened, so possibly worth other people mentioning for group bookings.
There's a walk to the east of the site to Stotfold and, to the west, the kiddies' play/leisure and bbq area by Norton Bury which adds a little further interest to the site and both take just 10-15mins.
The fact the site is very basic didn't bother us at all - in fact I prefer it. However, the cleanliness of the toilets had a lot to be desired as there seemed to be something smeared on one of the walls for the two days we were there, and they were generally a bit tatty (though thankfully spider free!). That avoided, loo rolls were continually stocked and the seats stayed put!
My main concern was quality of sleep due to noise from the A1 as it's so close you can see it! We didn't even hear a hum from it night or day which was a relief. However, all the adults in our party were woken up throughout the night by the rustle of the wind trees though which was very loud indeed - that might sound a bit whiny but we all agreed it was as though heavy rain was pounding the tents! I guess though that had we stayed a second night we'd have slept right through it!
All in all, you're paying a very good price for a comfortable and, toilets aside, clean site with generally good, quiet (probably likeminded) fellow campers.

We stayed here at the beginning of august. Lovely site.
The site is nice and if you camp in the orchard its perfect. Not sure if we would go back.
Lots walks in the area
Toilets were kept clean.
Met some really nice campers.
Having to take your rubbish home was a bit of a shock as never had to do that at any other site

We stayed at Radwell Mill Lake for 1 night on the first night it rained for weeks! The rate was very reasonable (£9 for a family of 4 per night, less if a caravan club member) and whilst the facilities were basic (toilets with cold water only) we had a great time.
The site has two areas to pitch, the Orchard which was being used by a rally and then the field. We were able to pitch where we liked in the field, and there were lots of footpaths led to Radwell Meadows Nature Reserve and the surrounding area.
The owners came round to collect our money late afternoon and check we were ok with the facilities and to remind us of the rules: No camp fires, bbq's off the ground, take rubbish away but it was all very friendly.
There was a large group staying and a couple of others tents and the atmosphere was friendly and there was no noise after 11pm.
All in all, a great experience and a good time had by all!

We've just discovered this lovely little site. Only spent 1 night and wished we could have done more. Although it's very basic (clean wc's, just cold water) we found it to be just perfect for a chill out.
It was a windy day but the orchard where we camped was very sheltered and bit of a sun-trap, though if you wanted some shade there are plenty of trees around.
Enough space for a gentle kick around and some badminton, plus some walks around the site. Saw some adorable ducklings on the adjacent lake too.
Friendly owner and we wasn't rushed off the next day, which makes the whole experience so much more relaxing. An absolute bargain at £8 for a family of 4!
Recommended and we will definitely visit again soon.

Hello, I would like to share with you a comprehensive review of Radwell camping site.
I have been with my Family 3 times, once in 2009 and twice in 2010 and I intend on going again this year 2011 in a few weeks.
This is a really quiet and serene place to pitch up your tent or motorhome. It has 2 fields, one side is called the orchard and the other side has a name I'm sure but I don't know it !
The orchard is a smaller field with a high bush and about 8 trees in a row, It separates the field slightly and adds character. The larger field is on the other side, its bigger and open. There is plenty of space between the 2 fields and I think there is enough room for over 50 campers.
The price is reflected on there being no shower facilities, at £3. 50 per person per night this excellent value for money. If you are a large family this don't be put off, but pack a few board games and a football/badminton rackets ect.
£3. 50 pp is un-beatable.
The Lady that owns this site is very friendly and seems to be happy about BBQs so long as they are small and raised of grass ( take a brick ). There are no gates that close at night which is handy if you are arriving late one night to your tent. There is no need for security as its a well hidden place that does not attract the young idiots luckily.
This is a very basic but well kept campsite that offers excellent price for basic camping. There are male and female toilets with wash basins, There is only cold water so its difficult to wash up after yourself. There is a local service station 1 mile up the road with showers if needed.
There are Also very nice walks around radwell that will keep you occupied for a few days, after that you will need to go into baldock town( about 2 miles drive ) for entertainment, pubs ect. Baldock has a large tesco and sainsburys and petrol garage so there is always places to buy whatever you need.
My last stay in radwell was in October 2010 and I stayed with my partner and 1 year old Baby in our tent, Even though it got cold, windy and sometimes it rained it didn't spoil anything as it was so refreshing and peaceful that we didn't want to leave ! :(. Its a great place to stay for a week or so.
The caretaker is a very friendly person too, also very helpful and understanding.
I will also add that there was no charge for our baby as he is under 1 years of age.
The toilet blocks where heated, and well lit at night time and the mains water supply was easy to get too. The toilets where separated mens and the other side Females, although its the same block. Toilets where always clean and well stocked with nice toilet roll. Its clear that the owner has pride in this site and that's why its always a nice clean place to stay. There are no kids parks but with all that grass available you just need imagination and maybe a ball to have some fun. There are high trees in the side of the big field that can be good to camp under for shade in the summer, When its very hot outside tents get even hotter! so these big trees can give you enough shade to stay cool. The toilet blocks are conveniently in-between the two camping fields.
The owner visits every evening to collect the money for your stay, you just turn up, pitch up enjoy yourself and about 7pm the owner will collect whatever you need to pay, so have the right change ready if possible!. The whole site has some kind of history that I cannot make out, There is a very large building with a tractor in it, maybe it used to be a farm ?
:)
To Summarise. Go and spend some time here, You don't need a shower to have a great break ! you wont get dirty there anyway as its so clean. Its very peaceful and if your a hard worker like me then you probably need to lower that blood pressure ! and this place is just what you need. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND this place. Friendly campers and time for yourself along with an unbeatable small price, what more can you ask for !. :) I am going again soon so hopefully I will see a few extra people and maybe might see you :) !

We stayed here for a long weekend to try out our renovated second hand folding caravan and also so that my 16 year old son could go to the Rock Festival at nearby Knebworth on a weekend day ticket, where his 2 older brothers were camping.
We were very pleased with the campsite. It was exactly as others had described it. Basic, just a small toilet block with cold water, no showers or rubbish facilities. The owners were very friendly, could hardly hear the nearby motorway, we had a very peaceful time here.
It is a popular site, there were a lot of other campers coming and going over the weekend. Great for a short break (unless you like to shower daily). Would definitely return. Good value for money too, as camping and caravan club members we paid just £6 per night for the 3 of us!
