Me and my family are new to caravanning and we could not of asked for a better campsite for our first time away. Contact with the campsite via to staying was brilliant helpful and very accommodating. We chose this site as it is right on the tarka trail and ideal for what we wanted. The site itself is exceptionally well kept, grass was cut and very tidy all around. The site has a dog walking area, which is ideal and set in stunning surrounds with ponds etc. Well signed as ponds are deep and not to be entered.
Shower &toilet blocks were heaven, well cleaned spotless in fact and hot.
Site reception again very nice. Has a small amount of things on sale. If I was staying for longer than a weekend it would be a trip to a supermarket to stock up on food shop not really a shop. Games room for kids very good, couple pool tables and other table games. Visited bar played pool for the evening very relaxed friendly. Only thing is the drinks were a bit pricey. Bar staff were exceptional.
Dog friendly which is great. Sadly if you leave site you have to take them with you.
I really can not fault this campsite it really is worth a visit if you are looking for a chilled time away. Did not use out side pool due to weather. But again looked spotlessly clean.
A very pleasant stay and would def use again. Many thanks to all staff etc. If you are looking to be entertained by all singing and dancing its not for you, the site offers a relaxed environment to just chill out and enjoy.

We have just stayed on this site for the first time after many, many visits to North Devon. We have family in Westward Ho! and found the central location of this site ideal for visiting not only family but all the lovely attractions North Devon has to offer.
Upon arrival we were shown to our pitch which was on the terraced area and on the hard standing. There is also grassed pitches for caravans and more grassed pitches in the walled garden. The site toilet / facilities block was wonderful - spotlessly clean, warm and centrally located for the whole site.
Unfortunately, because of the rainy, cold weather the pool (in the walled garden) was only open twice during our stay, however this did not deterred other campers using it.
The site is large and open and we did enjoy the lovely walks around the ponds and grounds and there is easy access to the Tarka Trail from the site.
My only criticism of the site is the fact we never really saw any of the owners/wardens to speak to. This may have been due to the fact we visited before the start of the summer holidays, but reception was only open 9. 30am until 12 noon so we were normally out before it opened and back after it had closed. However, we did visit the information hut that had every possible brochure for attractions and a very large collection of reading books, board games and puzzles that campers had free use of - a very good idea on rainy evenings.
My only other gripe - and not really the fault of the site, is the fact that because it has farm land all around it, the local farmer had installed a 'bird/crow scarer' which started at 5. 30am until 10pm every day. Three very loud bangs every 5 mins was very annoying first thing in the morning - no need for an alarm clock!
TV reception is good, mobile phone reception not so good, you may need to wander around a bit to get a sign, however they do have a pay phone on site. They do have Wifi access, but because reception was never open when we were on site, we don't know how much was charged for this.
We would most definitely visit this site again as we did enjoy our stay very much.

Just stayed here for Easter break, Lovely site, back to nature, very quiet even though it was Easter. Touring areas are mainly 3 tiers of hardstandings on one side and a grassy area on the opposite side. Most people were on the hardstandings as the grass sloped slightly but we pitched up here as we thought we would get more of the evening sun. Levelling blocks were needed.
Tents were in the lovely walled garden and the statics in an area of their own.
Sanitary facilities were immaculate whatever time of day you visited. Showers - plenty of free hot water (push button type)
Reception very friendly, Smythie the site warden who runs the small bar is a lovely friendly character.
We chose this site because of the proximity to The Tarka Trail which is a trek down the site and up through the woods, ok if you are fit but may be a bit of a struggle with a few young kids but once on the trail you can go for miles, we loved it, cycling both ways several times, its also good for walkers and dog owners.
They have a play area for children and a shed with pool tables and football table (20p) All in all a lovely stay and we would highly recommend this site.

Just got back from our 3 days away at this park as it was recommended to us by a friend.
Toilets/showering facilities were immaculate! staff were friendly. Even though the pool was closed we still found lots to do such as the beach for the day (which was sandy), hired bikes and visited some local towns!
It was very quiet at night and was very friendly. Really good stay!

We have just got back from Smytham Manor.
Very pleased with the site, the tent pitches were large and not too close together, we stayed in the walled garden which was very sheltered.
Tent pitches were all very close to the facilities
The site staff were very friendly especially the man that worked in the bar,
Toilets and showers very clean and plenty of hot water.
Washing up facilities very good also with plenty of hot water.
We did not make use of the pool, but it looked very nice.
We walked along the Tarka trail, (which you can gain access from smytham mannor) towards meeth after about 2 1/2 miles you get to a cafe called Orchard yarde, they also do yurts for capping,
We hired bikes from torrington by the puffin billy pub, we cycled to instow and back, nice pub on cycle trail just by bideford called the Blacksmiths, they do lovely food.
Only 25 miles from bude, so you can go to cornwall for the day, also close to Westward ho, bideford and barstable

We visited this site both 10 & 12 years ago in a static caravan when the old owners had it.
Decided to revisit in a tent this time around.
It hasn't changed too much in that time.
However, the hard standing area to the left of the site looked scruffy compared to other parts of the site.
We were offered a pitch near the road by the Reception Office, but we asked for another one as this area seemed to be getting the full force of the westerly winds.
We moved to a pitch inside the walled area in the opposite corner to the the outdoor pool.
This proved a wise choice as the walled area protected us from the ever constant winds.
Overall, the site was very clean. Toilets were cleaned regularly, albeit at no set times.
The new toilets were heated & there was a notice for visitors to keep the door shut to keep the warmth in. This worked for the most part, but it did mean that due to poor ventilation & 1 or 2 showers worth of steam meant you could only see peoples legs or should someone with a bad diet use the toilets, you could gag very easliy on the trapped odours.
There is a launderette, dishwashing & freezer unit & Waste Disposal area attached to the block.
The Staff were friendly. The shop sold a few basics.
The local ice creams available were particularly nice (I'd recommend the vanilla!)
There is a bar (which we didn't use) that is open for a short period each evening.
The site is next to the 31 mile long Tarka Trail cycle route. We did the whole section both ways in 3 parts during the week. Exceptional area!
The only criticisms are:
1. That the site is not conducive to Westerly cold winds.
2. For some strange reason (& not the fault of the site or the owners), but we regularly found a varying number of people visiting the site were either not particularly friendly or at least made no attempts to acknowledge anyone around them. This is NOT normal IMHO of campers in general. This should not put you off visiting the site!
2 miles away is Great Torrington. A small town. There are a few small food shops & a few take-aways.
The Fish & Chip Shop in South Street was particularly nice & very clean!
The 1646 Museum is good fun (didn't go this time).
The local Dartington Crystal is a bit of a con at £3.75 per person entry for what is a short tour & then access to an expensive shop!
Interesting,. But just visit the shop!
Aim for the 'Puffing Billy' pub for the start of the best bit of the Tarka Trail to Bideford & Instow!
We gave our holiday a 3 out of 10 due to the weather, although the cycle routes are a 10 out of 10.
Overall, a nice site!
Rating for the site itself is 8 out of 10!
Would we go back?. No. But only because we've 'been there'. 'done that!'

This was a really nice and peaceful site. We called ahead to inform them we would be arriving late due to M6 being closed! We were told what to do, but when we got there someone was in reception.
The toilet blocks were always immaculate and the showers were free and set at a nice temperature (even our son really like the showers and he never wants a shower!).
They have a little shop within the reception on the site, but we did not use this.
There is a Tourist Information hut on site which has plenty of leaflets and also books and toys you can borrow.
There is a small children's play area, pitch and putt (we did not use this) outside. There is also a games room so plenty for children. Also a solar heated swimming pool, which we did not use due to poor weather.
There is also a nice walk around the site with ponds and wild flower areas. Information boards are around the park about the nature and flowers which was interesting and a nice touch.
We took our bikes so we could ride along the Tarka Trail which can be accessed direct from the site. This is a disused railway line so is a nice gentle ride and suitable for all ages. We rode to Bideford in the heavy rain showers, but still really enjoyed it.
The site is easy to get to as we stayed on all A roads. Note area does have many minor B roads so if towing you are better to stick to the A roads where possible.
We would definitely stay here again.

Just got back from visiting this campsite over the lovely May bank holiday weekend. The site was recommended by my friend's brother who lives locally. We arrived earlier than planned and were welcomed onto the site and shown where we were camping - just by the outdoor heated pool.
The campsite was lovely - very clean, friendly and well kept. The warden was so helpful and even lent one tent in our party an electric heater for the duration of our stay.
The toilet block/washing up area was fab! Very very clean, heated and well maintained - truly deserving of their 4-star status.
Our children were happily entertained by the swimming pool, play area including pool table, table tennis and a little play area for the younger children too.
All in all a very pleasant re-introduction to camping following a 20 year break! Highly recommended and one we will re-visit.

Even with the wet weather the site was well looked after. Toilets and Showers were always clean. The solar heated pool was a bit chilly (due to lack of sun!) but the kids were in it two or three times a day so it can't be that bad! A fairly quiet site even in August, quite a lot or friendly noise of people having fun in the early evenings. Lots of space for games and bike riding. Lots of static caravans (many of them unoccupied) but due to the landscaping you don't really notice them. We would definitely go back, hopefully with better weather!

August 2005 Was slightly aprehensive about visiting this site because of the previous reviews. Granted the pitches were on the small side, however i found the facilities to be great...new toilet, shower, washing up block...immaculate and cleaned very regularly...the showers were hot & free.
Swimming pool was advertised as heated but I found it too cold for my small children to go in.
Staff at reception were very friendly & welcoming..
A bit out of the way but the Williams Arms in Braunton (just outside of Barnstable) is worth a visit a stunning thatched pub/restaurant with one of the best carverys I've ever had.Wouldn't hesitate to go back.
