We have just returned from a visit to Benar Beach campsite, We chose this site as we are naturists. The section devoted to naturists is a pleasant field surrounded by a high wall and there is plenty of space so not at all crowded. We were charged £15 a night for a pitch with a tent which we thought rather expensive. The site facilities are very basic. On the naturist field there is just 1 portaloo and no showers so you have to go to the shower block in the other area of the camp and there are only 2 shower blocks for the entire camp. There are no flush toilets at all on the campsite, just a few portaloos in some areas of the camp. Also the owner charges 50p for a shower which we thought a rip off when charging £15 a night for a pitch. You have to go to his office and give him the 50p. We did want a shower at 7.15 am but found he had locked the showers so could not have one until he arrived a little later so he makes sure you can't have a shower without paying the 50p. So we thought a very pleasantly situated site but spoilt by the very basic facilities and the rates charged for such basic facilities.

Visited Benar Beach in July 09 as part of a Suntrekers Rally.
The site was quite quiet when we were there but had been very busy the week before. The naturist area was within a high stone wall enclosure which reduced the view considerably.
The owner, David, does not seem to really mind how or where you might pitch your caravan or tent
Protaloos did get a little smelly but he did seem to be round frequently attending to them. The beach is a 10 min walk away and the naturist section another 20mins to the north. There is a sign post when you get to it.
The textile side of the site has some electric(not in the naturist area) but is all down two sides of the site which is where most of the other caravans and tents were pitched. Recreation facilities area at an adjacent site but is a good 10-15mins walk away but is down a well maintained road.
Approach road to site is narrow at times and care should be taken.

An instant favourite here, especially as we are naturists. The private 'walled' section is actually surrounded by a fairly attractive drystone-effect wall (with wagtails nesting between the stones) and works as very good protection against any wind. In that small section there was only one portaloo but David, the friendly site manager, keeps it so clean you ought to feel comfortable enough using it. The walk to the other toilets isn't too long either.
During our visit the showers were not all working, so they were free.
The location is stunning. The beach is five minutes walk with epic views up to Snowdonia. The National Park is not a long drive away, with Barmouth good for any shopping needs.
When we head for Wales, Benar Beach will always be a consideration.

I went to Benar Beach in April been going now for about 3 years and been about 2-3 times a yr. David the owner is very chatty and looks after the site really well, returning back there again this weekend for a long weekend.
I have visited Harlech Castle and the waterfalls which are both very good day trips, worth a look!. About 10 mins walk away is the beach which is well kept and can be reached from the site.
The site is well maintained and clean along with the showers and washrooms. The only let down is there is no where to wash your pots if your in a tent.

Stayed here during the windy late May Bank holiday. Arrived Friday afternoon and met by very helpful site owner. The site was very well kept and the pitch was excellent. Had an afternoon on the beach, which is just a short walk away. Kids loved the sanddunes and expansive sand. Toilet and shower facilities are basic but clean and tidy. No pot washing facilities which is a shame.
Purchased fish and chip supper from the Dyffryn holiday camp a short drive to the north. Excellent food. Visited Harlech castle and the nant ? waterfalls.
An excellent weekend spoilt by the wind which damaged one of our groups tents and destroyed another.
Would definitely return to this site

I returned again to Benar Beach on the Sunday of the Whit Bank Holiday and stayed 7 nights.
On arrival there was a chaotic scene due to freak weather conditions - strong gusts of wind were coming down from the hills and several tents had been destroyed, and some of the unfortunate owners were packing up. (This was of course not the fault of Benar Beach, the same was happening all along this part of the coast). Despite these problems I pitched my tent, a Force Ten, next to one of the stored caravans, to afford some shelter from the wind. By Monday the weather had settled down but the sun only came out on Thursday, with Friday and Saturday also being very sunny, and this more than made amends for the poor weather earlier in the week. The beach itself, both the clothed and naturist sections, were very busy during the fine weather.
The camp site itself had changed little from the last time I visited. This is a compliment rather than a complaint because it offers everything I want. The electric shower, in the brick toilet block, was out of order, but the more modern showers in the portakabins are much better, and don't have a time limit. I would recommend bringing your own loo paper because the toilets only have the 'izal' type of paper. There are also 'portaloos' from an outside contractor, and these were being cleaned/replaced while I was on the site.
With regard to the neighbouring facilities I was disappointed with poor service in the Dyffryn Seaside Inn. When I went in after pitching my tent, one of the staff members ignored me, while serving customers who arrived after me. As a result I drank my one and only pint in there on the Sunday night. A fellow camper mentioned that others had made similar remarks about this pub. On that basis I decided to try the two pubs on the Barmouth Bay complex, the other side of Talybont (in the direction of Barmouth) and was pleasantly impressed. The two venues, Henry's Bar and the Sands Club, have friendly staff, reasonably priced beer, and at least one venue has entertainment every evening. They can be reached by a 5-10 minute car journey or a 45 minute walk around the roads. The more intrepid among you could try the more direct route along the beach, the only difficulty being the River Ysgethin which flows across the beach - however it is very shallow and less than two metres wide.
Two other places I went to were the Harlech Tandoori and Tony's Pizza in Talybont itself and both are very good.
Anyway I have every intention of returning to Benar Beach at least one more time this summer.

We thouroughly enjoyed our visit to Benar Beach, it is a very friendly site close to the beach, (just a stones throw). David the owner of the site greeted us on our arrival and took us to were we could put our caravan, the pitch was excellent loads of room we had an electric hook up and we were given no restrictions on what appliances we could or could not use in the caravan.
The toilets and showers were quite basic but always clean, the site itself was also kept very clean. We liked it because there aren't any shops or club on site though I know some people like those facilites, though it is only a short distance to the next site where all those things are available. The best thing as far as we were concerned is that we could take our dogs who were made very welcome, all David asks for is a donation to an animal charity. We have already made reservations to go again this year, so anybody who wants a nice friendly site this is the one to go to.

GENERAL SITE INFORMATION My general impression of this site was one of a very well maintained, clean, simple site with a nice friendly atmosphere. All sizes of party from singles to multi-family groups were present. I should point out that the owners do limit the number of singles to avoid any 'funny business' but they none-the-less remain most welcoming of sensible, respectable single guests.
The site is owned by Brenda and David Powell Jones. During my stay David was present on site approx. 0700-2200 every day in spite of the fact there was also a site manager present 24 hours a day. There was never a problem finding someone if you needed to.
The camp-site is situated just behind the most fabulous sand dunes. Just one minute walk from the site is a board-walk through the dunes providing easy access for both able bodied and the disabled to a superb beach. The beach is zoned for those with pets and for those who prefer to avoid them. The top part of the beach is pebble but this gives way to excellent sands in just a few yards.
The surrounding landscape is spectacular with fabulous views of the various local mountains further inland including the formation that David describes as the Lying Lady. This particular group of mountains looks incredibly like a pregnant lady lying on her back. The sight of the clouds rolling away from the sea and kissing the mountain tops as they pass by is mesmerising.
This is a relatively simple site with toilets & showers and a finite number of electrical, satellite & TV hook-ups. If you need more than this then a short walk across the lane will give access to the club, shop, take-away and laundry facilities of a nearby large commercial site. Fortunately for those who wish to avoid the noise and bustle of such sites, it remains far enough away not to intrude on this rather more tranquil site while still offering convenient access to some extra facilities.
Although most general provisions (A Spar store and post-office) including fuel and take-aways can can obtained very close by in Llanbedr, Barmouth is just 5 miles to the south and offers a good range of shops including a Woolworths.
WELCOME / INTRODUCTION / COST I met David on arrival. Even though I was a single male camper (and as such I'm automatically banned from the commercial site next door) he was very keen to make sure I was made thoroughly welcome and took the time to show me the facilities in spite of being obviously hectic with the weekend change-over of guests. I was then given a keyring, an information sheet and the site rules which I was (quite rightly) asked to examine. The cost for a single camper in early August was just 7.00 GBP per night with no hook-ups.
There were lots of tourist information leaflets available representing many local attractions. I suggest you don't miss out on the Llechwen Slate Caverns with its deep mine tour, miner's tramway tour and miner's village. Also, Harlech Castle and around the corner from that "The Pie Shop" that does an amazingly good breakfast!
GROUND / PITCHES The site has well drained ground which is nice and level; there are variations in height around the three fields but the pitches themselves are absolutely fine. The grass is well maintained as are the prepared road surfaces. There is a combination of hedgerow and beautifully crafted stone walling around the field perimeters. Unless space is limited during the busy changeover periods David is quite happy for people to choose their own pitches. The only exception may be where the grass has recently been significantly damaged by a long stayer, in which case David may ask you not to pitch on that particular spot so the grass can recover. The soil is easy for pegs but can be a bit sandy in places (the price you pay for being so close to a beautiful beach) so appropriate pegs should be used. For the ill-prepared or forgetful, suitable pegs can be bought from the site office.
SHOWERS / TOILETS The main field houses a permanent toilet & shower block with separate sides for men and women. To supplement this there are also 'portacabin' showers and numerous conveniently placed 'portacabin' toilets which include handwashing basins. There is also a 'portacabin' loo for disabled guests so they are clearly considered. Admittedly in the men's side of the permanent toilet / shower block the loo paper was the hard stuff but the very well provisioned portable loos had the softer, kinder toilet paper. Showers are charged at 40p. As mentioned by another member, I can particularly recommend the portable shower blocks (no timer!). All toilet and washing facilities were kept in a very clean state. In fact, you will hardly ever see David outside of the site office unless he has his toilet cleaning kit in hand! I have no complaints at all regarding these facilities.
NATURIST FACILITIES A small section of the site, well obscured from the rest, is dedicated to naturists who are warmly welcomed. This is not well publicised and is kept small to maintain a close family like atmosphere. Here numbers of singles are strictly limited and prospective guests may find themselves sensitively scrutinised to ensure the site continues to enjoy its good reputation. There is a legally registered naturist beach further to the north of and accessible from the normal beach, about 10-15 minutes walk from the site.
GENERAL SERVICE The general level of service is excellent. David is very friendly, loves to chat and has a great sense of humour. He is a very fair and reasonable man ready to bend over backwards but he will act quickly if someone chooses to annoy or endanger others by breaking the very reasonable site rules. If you have any problems he will resolve them if it is at all possible. During my stay I saw him pass by most pitches several times a day on foot asking how people were and checking that everything was ok.
FINDING THE SITE The formal site address is: Benar Beach Touring & Camping Park, Talybont, Nr. Barmouth, Mid Wales, LL43 2AR. It is important to state "Nr. Barmouth" as there are many Talybonts in Wales. Note that some sat-nav systems will not recognise this postcode. It is best to use the postcode LL44 2RX for navigation. This will stop at a house just about half a mile short of the site but on the same lane. Just continue along the lane and the site emerges on the left after a sharp left-hand bend.
IN CONCLUSION I had a perfect stay at this site. It was generally tranquil, clean, efficient, well run but most of all warm and friendly. Perhaps slightly off subject here, David was particularly keen to set me some homework and to provide tests when he discovered I was learning the Welsh language. So, if you want encouragement in that area too, they are more than happy to oblige. Talking to other campers it seems that a good many of them were regulars who had returned year after year, some across three generations! I will be returning for sure and would recommend it without reservation. Feel free to contact me if I've missed anything out.

We have been visiting this site for a few years now, we have used both parts of the site, but being naturists obviously prefer the naturist part, it is also quieter, David is a helpful guy, greets you with a handshake, I have always found him very friendly.
The site is basic but well worth a visit, I would recommend it to anyone, the views of the surrounding area are fantastic too.

We stayed at Benar Beach camping park August bank holiday. Not our usual place, but were welcomed by the owner who saved our holiday - didn't like to do the return drive home when our original camp site was full! Very pleasant stay. Nearly ended up pitching tent in the nudist enclosure! close call. Ha ha. Nice and quite site, very friendly reception. Plenty of portaloos along the wall. Only problem was that by the friday afternoon couldn't move with all the tents on top of each other. Crammed in as much as they could in what is still a small site. All in all it was bank holiday! So I was made up he took us in. Would return again, but not in high season.
